Chapter 332: Oscillation
The workshop smelled like hot quartz and the particular sweetness of rune-oil that had been heated past its recommended operating temperature.
Wikk knew it was wrong the way he knew most things, not through reasoning but through the vibration that travelled up through the test bench and into his forearms when he held the engine casing during a run. The Mark VIII prototype sat on the bench like a sleeping animal, compact, the housing panels removed to expose the internal architecture: rotor assembly, compression chamber, the oscillation dampener that his grandfather had redesigned seven times across three decades and that Wikk had rebuilt twice in four months because the drawings in the notebook were precise and the drawings were wrong and the drawings being wrong was the most useful thing about them.
The workshop was always hot. A thick, oppressive heat radiated from the Mark IV forge-fire furnace in the adjacent bay. The furnace powered the lathe, the press, and the rune-crystal cutting wheel Fizzen had designed in Year 431. Wikk’s earliest memory was standing on a stool at age four, sweat stinging his eyes, watching Fizzen’s hands move inside an engine casing. Iron filings and scorched rune-oil coated the back of his throat. A faint, sugary scent of heated quartz lingered over the benches, inseparable from the memory of his grandfather murmuring, "Wrong, but usefully wrong," whenever a component failed.
Fizzen’s notebooks occupied the third shelf above the workbench, fourteen volumes, leather-bound, the spines cracked and stained with the same rune-oil that stained everything in the workshop. Wikk had read all fourteen. He had read them the way a theologian reads scripture, not once but cyclically, returning to earlier volumes as later ones revealed connections that hadn’t been visible on the first pass. The marginalia was the important part. The main text was engineering, specifications, measurements, performance data. The marginalia was Fizzen thinking. The marginalia was where the drawings were wrong in useful ways, where Fizzen had noted anomalies and contradictions and the sense of "not quite" that separated a working design from a correct one.
Page 341. Volume twelve. The Mark VIII dampener redesign. Fizzen’s last entry before the notebooks stopped: "Dampener harmonic. Secondary vibration propagates through solid medium. Rune crystal activation at 3m, no physical connection. It must be a signal instead of a flaw. Confirm." The entry was dated Year 495. Fizzen had died three years later without confirming. Wikk had inherited the notebooks at twelve. He had read page 341 at thirteen. He had understood the dampener redesign at fourteen. He had rebuilt the dampener at fifteen. He was sixteen now, and the dampener was on the test bench, and the dampener was wrong.
The dampener was supposed to eliminate resonance flutter, the secondary vibration that propagated through the engine casing when the rotor passed its critical speed threshold. Iterations three through six had failed because the dampener’s rune-crystal alignment couldn’t absorb the full frequency range. Iteration seven, Fizzen’s last design, solved the absorption problem by splitting the dampener into three offset crystals that each handled a segment of the frequency band. The design was elegant. The design was Fizzen’s best work. The design produced a harmonic that shouldn’t have existed.
Wikk ran the test sequence. Standard procedure: rotor acceleration from rest to operating speed in forty-five seconds, hold at critical threshold for fifteen seconds, deceleration to rest in thirty. The procedure was documented on page twelve of the operations manual that the Mechanist Institute required for all prototype testing, and the procedure was followed because following procedure was what you did when you were sixteen and working in a shop that bore your dead grandfather’s name and the senior technicians watched you the way adults watch a child who has been given a very sharp knife.
The rotor accelerated. The compression chamber pressurised. The dampener engaged, three crystals in sequence, each one taking its frequency segment, the absorption clean and tight and correct. No resonance flutter. The iteration seven design worked. Fizzen had been right. The drawings were right after all.
Except.
The secondary vibration appeared at the forty-second second of the acceleration phase. Instead of resonance flutter, it was something else. A harmonic. Low-frequency. Below the threshold of audibility, below the range of the standard vibration gauge bolted to the test bench, below everything Wikk had been trained to measure. He felt it through his forearms. A pulse. Rhythmic. Consistent. Coming from the dampener itself, from the gap between the three offset crystals, the gap that existed because the crystals couldn’t overlap without interfering, the gap that Fizzen had noted with a small asterisk and the word "acceptable" in the marginalia.
The gap was producing a signal.
Wikk lifted his hands from the engine casing. The vibration continued, through the bench, through the floor, through the stone foundation of the workshop. He looked at the test bench instruments. Rotor speed: nominal. Compression: nominal. Dampener absorption: almost total. Temperature: nominal. Every gauge read normal. Every gauge was measuring what it was designed to measure, and what it was designed to measure did not include a sub-audible harmonic propagating through solid stone.
"Rhen," he said. "Rhen, is anything happening over there?"
Rhen was in the adjacent room, the calibration bay, separated from the test workshop by a stone wall forty centimetres thick. The calibration bay contained, among other things, a rune-detection crystal array used for testing rune-amplifier sensitivity before field deployment. The array was not connected to the Mark VIII. The array was not connected to anything in the test workshop. The array sat on its shelf the way it had sat on its shelf for six years, inert, waiting for a technician to plug it into a test circuit and run the sensitivity protocol.
"The array just lit up," Rhen called back. His voice carried the bewilderment of someone who was looking at something that contradicted his understanding of how the room worked. "I didn’t touch it. It’s on standby. The detection crystal is active."
Wikk stared at the wall. Forty centimetres of garrison-grade stone. The harmonic was travelling through it. The harmonic was reaching a rune-crystal on the other side of the wall and activating it, and the activation was not a malfunction because the crystal was doing exactly what it was designed to do, detecting a rune-frequency signal. The crystal didn’t know the signal wasn’t supposed to exist. The crystal didn’t know it wasn’t supposed to be receiving. The crystal did what crystals did: it responded.
He shut down the engine. Waited. Rhen reported: array returned to standby. Wikk restarted the engine. Ran the test sequence again. Same result. Forty-second second. Harmonic. Propagation through stone. Array activation in the adjacent room. He ran it a third time. Same. A fourth. Same.
The workshop supervisor arrived at the end of the fifth run. Wikk showed him the data, five consecutive activations of an unconnected rune-crystal in a room separated by forty centimetres of stone, triggered by a sub-audible harmonic produced by a dampener gap in a Mark VIII engine prototype. The supervisor looked at the data. Looked at the engine. Looked at the wall.
"Oscillation bleed," he said. He wrote it in the daily log. "Non-critical. Note for dampener redesign consideration."
He left.
Wikk sat in the workshop. The rune-amplifier in the adjacent room was still warm, Rhen had reported residual thermal activity in the detection crystal, the kind that persisted for several minutes after a strong activation. Wikk hadn’t turned it on. He hadn’t touched it. He hadn’t known it would respond. The engine had produced a signal, and the signal had gone through a wall, and the crystal had received it, and nobody had designed any part of this to happen.
He opened his notebook. The notebook was the same style Fizzen had used, leather-bound, wide margins, the kind that the Krugvane stationery shop kept in stock because the Gearspark family had been buying them for sixty years and the shop owner’s son now ordered them automatically every Emberdusk. The leather smelled like engine oil because everything in the workshop smelled like engine oil, including Wikk, including the pen, including the three-fingered left hand that held the notebook open while the right hand wrote.
One line.
It went through the wall.
He underlined "through." Sat with the notebook open. The workshop was quiet, evening shift changeover, the senior technicians gone, the sound of the cooling engine ticking as the metal contracted. The rune-crystal in the next room was dark again. The wall was just a wall again. Except it wasn’t, because walls were barriers and this wall had been transparent to something, and the something was a signal, and the signal was accidental, and accidental signals that passed through stone were not oscillation bleed and were not non-critical and were not a note for dampener redesign consideration.
He closed the notebook. The leather was warm from the bench heat. His left hand held it shut, three fingers, two lost to the same lathe that had taken Fizzen’s. Same machine, same hand, same family. Wikk had been fourteen. The lathe had not cared whose grandson he was.
