Chapter 73: Borrowed Breaths
The far ledge was flat enough to stand on and narrow enough to make standing a choice.
Kael crossed first. Vaela followed with the blade between her teeth, dragging Dorran’s splint by its salvage straps. Orrek took Dorran’s other side. Behind them, Renn guided the survivors by touch: shoulder, wrist, sleeve, cold iron bolted into the stone.
The ledge curved around the shaft. Pipe mouths lined the inner wall beneath iron lips. Their rims were black with old soot. Between them, hair-thin roots slept in shallow cuts in the stone.
Nobody sat until Kael tested the ledge. He walked its length once, heel first, then knuckle against the wall, then palm over the pipe lips without touching them. The stone held, but it held like old teeth held in a dying mouth: present, useful, and ready to betray pressure. Fine cracks crossed the floor where workers had once dragged chains. In two places, dried black threads had been scraped away by something with claws.
"Rest one breath at a time," he said. "Nobody leans against the mouths."
"I was planning to embrace the friendly pipe," Orrek muttered.
Vaela looked at him. "If you faint, I will drag you by the least wounded part."
"Romance survives."
A few survivors heard the exchange and managed the weakest kind of laughter. It did not soften the place. It kept their breathing from turning into panic.
Renn did a count without saying the number aloud. His finger touched sleeve, shoulder, splint, child, old woman, twins, Tavin, Jaro, Vaela, Orrek, Kael, and the rest in order. He finished with his palm against his own chest. The gate had taught him a cruel lesson: a count that stayed only in his head could be attacked. This one moved through contact.
Dorran lay on his side, biting his sleeve as Orrek tightened the splint.
"Useful news," Orrek said.
Dorran’s eyes watered. "You have useful news?"
"Your foot is still attached."
"You said that last time."
"It remains true. Respect consistency."
Vaela cut a strip from a torn harness and handed it over. "Tie that before his foot chooses a new direction."
Orrek took it. "My bedside manner is being criticized by a woman who answers every wound with a knife."
"My knife is gentle. You are not."
Dorran made a small broken laugh. It ended in a hiss when the splint settled.
Tavin coughed behind them.
COUGH!
A root snapped out of the stone under his mouth. It was thin as a vein and shiny with black fluid. The tip flattened against the floor, then crawled toward the heat of his breath.
Kael’s hand closed around Tavin’s shoulder.
"Cloth."
Tavin clapped the rag over his mouth.
The root stopped. Its tip lifted and waved in the air, tasting.
Jaro stared at it. "It follows exhaled air."
"Can it hurt him?" Renn asked.
"It can lead something to him."
The root struck. Kael caught it against his wrist. It punched through the skin, seeking a pulse.
Pain flashed white.
The Root answered.

The root found no purchase. Kael pinched it between thumb and forefinger and pulled. A length of black thread came free from the ledge with a wet tearing sound.
The thread did not end cleanly. More of it came out of the stone, then more, thin and slick, wrapped around tiny knots of old hair, soot, and dried blood. It had been laid into the ledge like a listening net. Kael pulled until the strand snapped somewhere deeper in the wall.
A pipe mouth coughed.
HAAAH!
The cough carried a copy of Tavin’s breath back at them. The same tremble. The same hitch from pain. Tavin went still, hearing himself from stone.
"It stole my breath," he whispered.
"It copied the shape," Jaro said, voice small. "The roots taste air. The pipes remember it long enough to follow."
"Then no one gives them a clean breath," Vaela said.
She tore her own sleeve into strips, passed them down the line, and slapped Orrek’s hand when he tried to wave his away.
"I am beautiful without accessories," he said.
"You are loud without them. Cloth."
RIP!
The pipe mouths along the wall clicked shut.
"Keep the cloth on," Kael said. "Breathe through it. Do not let blood touch the roots."
The warning arrived one breath before proof. The woman with the ash cough bent double and tried to smother the sound against her sleeve. A red thread slid from a floor cut toward the speck of black blood she had spat into her palm. It moved slowly until she panicked. Then it darted.
Kael stamped it into the stone.
CRACK!
The thread split into three thinner pieces and kept crawling.
Vaela cursed, cut one, missed one, and pinned the last under her boot. The missed strand reached the woman’s wrist. Old Noll slapped the wrist up before it touched.
"Cough upward," he snapped.
"That is not a thing," she choked.
"Make it one."
She coughed into the cloth, face red and wet-eyed, and kept her blood off the floor.
A young worker stared at the rag in her hand. "What if I cannot breathe?"
Vaela looked at her. "You breathe badly. You still breathe."
The worker nodded once, furious tears running down her face.
Renn crawled down the line, checking shoulders. He did not use names. He squeezed a hand and received a squeeze back. When he reached Tavin, he paused at the burn under the man’s shirt.
The squeeze responses were uneven. Old Noll answered hard enough to hurt. The smaller furnace boy answered with only two fingers. Sella answered twice, once for herself and once for the child pressed against her side. Dorran tried to answer with the foot in the splint until Orrek told him to stop being dramatic with a damaged limb.
Tavin did not answer at first.
His eyes were fixed on the sealed pipe mouths, as if one might say his breath back to him again.
Renn squeezed his wrist harder.
"Here," Renn rasped.
Tavin blinked.
"Here," he answered.
"The old cut is warm."
Tavin swallowed. "It has been warm since the cage."
"Warmer."
Kael pulled the shirt collar aside. Around Tavin’s shoulder scar, fine black threads had surfaced beneath the skin. They pointed toward the shaft.
The four hands scraped on the chain below.
The sound came higher than before.
Everyone heard the difference. The chain did not shudder far below now. It trembled inside the wall beside them. The thing had found a hidden run of iron or a pipe ladder behind stone. Jaro pressed his ear to the ledge, then recoiled.
"It is beside us."
Vaela drew her blade. "Where?"
A pipe lip opened near Dorran’s splint.
Kael kicked the mouth shut before the red strip inside could touch the bandage.
BANG!
Another lip opened behind Tavin. Vaela cut across it, and black fluid spattered her wrist. The fluid smoked but did not burn through. She wiped it on the stone with a look of deep personal insult.
"Rude place," Orrek said through his cloth.
The ledge answered with one long scrape.
SCRAAAAAPE!
SCRAPE!
Then a pale head rose above the ledge.
It had no eyes. Its face was smooth except for two nostril slits and a mouth packed with small flat teeth. Bone plates shifted beneath the white skin of its chest. Four arms gripped the rock around it. The lower pair ended in hooked fingers, made for narrow gaps and wet rope.
Jaro covered his mouth with both hands.
Vaela leaned toward him. "What is it?"
"A body built for the pipes," he said.
"What does it do?"
The creature’s chest plates opened. A pair of black, wet lungs pulsed inside them. Red strips slid out from between the plates and lifted toward Tavin.
The strips did not wave blindly. One dipped toward the old cough blood crushed under Kael’s heel. One tasted the cloth over Renn’s mouth. The longest bent toward Tavin’s shoulder and shivered with recognition, as if the scar had become a note only it could hear.
Tavin backed into Jaro.
Jaro shoved him forward again with both hands. "Do not give it the wall."
"It wants me."
"Then stand where Kael can reach what wants you."
Tavin’s face went gray, but he stayed in front of the wall instead of melting against it.
Jaro went gray.
"It finds wounded people."
The creature did not leap. It inhaled.
Every cloth mask pulled tight against every mouth. The ash cough woman doubled over and swallowed the sound before it escaped. Tavin’s shoulder scar rose under his shirt as if tugged from inside. The smaller furnace boy reached for Sella, missed, and caught Renn’s sleeve instead.
Renn looked down at the small hand on him, then at the smooth blind face above the ledge.
"Do not breathe alone," he rasped.
The boy nodded, terrified and obedient. Sella pressed her own cloth over both their mouths and breathed with him, slow and ugly.
Kael stepped between the creature and the survivors.
"Then it found the wrong ledge."
The creature answered by setting all four hands on stone. The ledge dipped under its weight.
A pipe mouth opened behind the survivors and copied Tavin’s breath again, closer this time. The ledge gave them no clean pause. Every cloth mask had become part of the fight. Breathe too hard and the roots tracked. Breathe too little and the body weakened. The survivors learned the ugly middle by watching one another’s shoulders.
Old Noll tapped the twins whenever they forgot. Sella matched the child’s breath with her own. Renn listened for the copied rhythm and lifted a hand whenever the pipes began to steal it cleanly.
The copied breath carried a wet clicking answer from inside the wall, closer than before.
Then it copied Sella.
The sound came from two pipe mouths at once, her same shaken rhythm repeated through wet metal. Sella flinched as if her own lungs had left her body. The child tried to stop breathing. Renn shook his sleeve with two fingers.
"Keep it ugly," he rasped.
"It hears me."
"Make it hear you alive."
The boy dragged air through the cloth. Sella breathed with him again, shaking but stubborn. The pipe copy lost its clean rhythm and broke into a wet stutter.
