Chapter 64: Clean Men Crack
Jaro whispered Kael’s name.
SCRAPE!
A loose chain knocked once above shattered teeth, then went still. Every body stayed braced; in the lower crawl, stillness usually meant a hidden tooth had settled on a place to hurt.
HUM!
Shattered teeth left the air scraped thin, metallic, and too warm behind the teeth.
The crawl passage heard it.
Every dead mark opened at once.
The opening was narrow and hungry only in pieces. Just enough for black teeth to show along the low ceiling, the walls, the floor beneath Kael’s hands. The marks did not sing. They inhaled.
HUUUM!
The sound was not loud.
That made it worse.
It slid under skin instead of striking the ear.
Vaela flattened herself to the passage floor ahead of Kael and hissed through her teeth. "Jaro."
The boy clapped both hands over his mouth, eyes huge. Orrek could not fit both shoulders cleanly into the crawl. His ruined side dragged against the wall. He bit down on a groan and blood leaked from one nostril. Behind him, the touch chain tightened. Fourteen survivors pressed themselves low in the black dust, each hand locked to a sleeve, strap, wrist, ankle, anything that proved the next body had not been forgotten.
Renn’s lips trembled.
Kael saw him fight the count.
Renn held the count behind clenched teeth.
Then the broken teeth spoke without voices.
The dead marks said nothing. A cold thread pressed into every exposed wound.
The dead marks had heard a living name, and through the old mouth teeth Kael had shattered, something deeper leaned close. A black intake thread slipped into the crawl passage like a cold wire pushed through a wound. The mark in Kael’s palm split open. Black fluid crawled between his knuckles.
His body locked.
The black thread did not pull him this time. It tested his wounds first.
That listening had weight.
No hammer blow or press struck him; it felt like a cage-maker testing which wrist would take a cuff.
Kael hated it more than he hated teeth.
It pressed through the crawl space, measured his breath, touched the workers behind him, brushed Renn’s swollen throat, paused over Vaela’s blade hand, tasted Orrek’s ruined shoulder, then returned to Kael’s palm with a question that did not need language.
Why keep the injured?
Kael’s teeth ground together. He pushed one hand flat against the floor. The dead mark beneath his palm opened around his fingers.
CRACK!
A tooth bit through the side of his thumb.
The pressure became direct.
Kael kept the order sealed behind his teeth and drove the shards into Mind Soul Anchor, Metaphysical Resistance, and Threat Perception Instinct before shattered teeth could take another piece of him.
ALLOCATE!

The pressure sharpened.
Behind him, the touch chain began to tremble. The black thread barely had to pull. It only had to make every person feel the hook waiting for their breath. Kael pushed his bleeding thumb deeper into the biting tooth and kept the pressure on himself. If it wanted a body, it could start with the one that hit back.
For a moment Kael saw the crawl passage from above, below, inside, outside. He saw the broken old mouth behind them, its torn teeth still wet with route memory. He saw a far chamber where black chains crossed a woman’s wrists and ankles. He saw Ivara Thane lift her head in the dark, eyes cold enough to cut pipe pulse.
She did not speak.
She smiled once.
Softness had no place in it.
Rescue had not reached them.
Dangerous.
Then the black thread cinched the vision tight around Kael’s neck. Kael snapped his head downward and slammed his forehead into the floor tooth that had his thumb.
THUD!
The impact made the crawl passage buck.
Vaela flattened one elbow into the dust and drove her blade sideways through a cord of black pressure reaching for Jaro’s ankle.
SNAP!
"Move!" she rasped.
The touch chain froze.`r`n`r`nThey were pinned by listening.
Kael shifted his knees under him. The cramped passage punished the motion. He could not rise. Could not swing his full arm. Could not turn his shoulders. The only weapons available were forehead, palms, knees, breath, and the refusal to let a hook decide him.
So he used those.
He drove his left knee into the floor.
THUD!
Then his right palm into the wall.
CRACK!
Then his shoulder into the low ceiling, not enough to break free, enough to make the dead teeth chatter.
CLATTER!
The black intake thread recoiled from the ugly angles. It understood clean pipe pulse, not a man using every trapped inch as a weapon.
Orrek saw the opening.
With one arm, one shoulder, and a face twisted in pain, he shoved his forearm under the workers behind him and pushed the touch chain forward.
"Crawl, you pretty corpses! Crawl ugly!"
A woman almost laughed and sobbed at the same time. Renn dragged himself forward with one hand that still answered him.
His wounded throat worked.
No numbers came out.
Jaro shook so hard his teeth clicked, but he moved when Vaela hooked his collar and pulled.
The dead marks kept inhaling.
HUUUM!
The sound bent the air. It tried to make each breath feel borrowed. It tried to make every protected body a clean question.
Kael answered with weight.
He slammed his palm into the mark beside his face and crushed inward.
The mark was not flesh. The dead mark was anchored through a pressure seam, and the seam ran like a tendon under its teeth. His strengthened instinct saw that seam. His new resistance kept the probe from turning the sight into pain. His mind soul anchor held the question away from the center of him.
He closed his fist around the seam.
Then he pulled.
RIP!
The dead mark tore loose in a strip of black bone and old sound. The listening pressure broke for one breath, enough for Vaela to shove Jaro through the narrow crawl opening ahead. Renn followed, dragged by Tavin and the one eyed man. Orrek pushed from behind with a sound that might have been a curse if he had dared shape it.
Kael stayed last in the crawl.
The dead marks focused on him alone.
Sharper.
Pressure that came for him could feed him, wound him, or fail. Pressure that went for the workers made choices expensive.
The dead marks around him opened wider.
The black teeth clicked in a rhythm he understood.`r`n`r`nGive us their names.
Kael smiled into the dust.
"No."
The word was quiet.
It was still a word.
Every dead mark lunged.
Kael moved before the bite closed. He curled his body around the torn strip in his fist, drove both feet into the narrowing floor, and launched himself through the last stretch of crawl like a thrown weight.
BANG!
His shoulders tore skin from both walls. Teeth scraped his ribs. One caught his scalp and opened it again. Warm blood ran down his face. He burst out into a lower chamber and hit the ground on one knee.
THUD!
The crawl passage snapped shut behind him. For three breaths, nobody moved.
Then Renn whispered, "Fourteen."
Vaela rounded on him.
He lifted a trembling hand. "Inside first. Then outside. Had to know."
She looked ready to cut him and hug him in the same motion. Orrek collapsed against the wall, breathing like broken bellows.
"I hate crawling. If I ever rule anything, crawling is banned."
Jaro slid down beside a pile of old pipe ash, shaking.
"The dead marks heard him."
Kael rose slowly.
Blood dripped from his scalp to his jaw.
DRIP!
"The shape worked."
Jaro stared. "Good?"
"Now it knows I don’t answer."
The chamber ahead opened into three silent routes.
The exhausted line did not rush toward them.`r`n`r`nThat restraint was new for the group. It was bruised learning, not courage or wisdom.
These passages stayed open only because captors had forced enough bodies through them to grind their mechanisms smooth. The survivors gathered in a crouched cluster while Kael checked the chamber with his eyes and the newer instinct behind them.
His body shook once, hard enough that Orrek saw it. The bigger man said nothing. That silence was useful. Some pains became worse when named by someone who could not carry them.
The left passage held no warm air. The middle passage had too much dust settled evenly across its floor. The right passage gave off the faintest smell of cooked marrow.
Every sign was a mouth pretending not to be one.
Vaela wiped black dust from her cheek with the back of her wrist. "Which one lies least?" Jaro looked miserable. "That’s not how routes work."
"Everything works that way."
"Some roads lie by being true first."
Orrek exhaled hard enough to shake blood from his lip. "I miss clubs again. Clubs never made me discuss truth." Renn crouched beside the closest survivor and touched two fingers to the floor. His wounded wrist trembled, but he kept his breathing quiet.
"The chamber wants us to choose hungry," he whispered.
Kael looked at the right route.
The smell of marrow thickened as if pleased. He stepped between the route and the workers before hunger could become motion.
He looked up after the last fragment stopped moving.
Above each route, dead singing marks had been packed into the shape of an eye.
All three eyes were open.
