Chapter 174: The Gray Wing
"Let us continue our dance."
The words had barely left Lysa’s lips when the crimson mist around her began to shift.
The cloud of blood mist swirled and condensed, pulsing like a living heart. Shapes emerged from the haze, their forms delicate yet menacing.
One by one, crimson butterflies fluttered into existence, their wings beating in a slow, hypnotic rhythm that seemed to echo through the night air.
The soft glow of their bodies cast eerie shadows across the clearing.
Cael’s eyes narrowed. A sense of dread crept up his spine as he watched the butterflies drift toward him.
’There was something wrong with them.’
Something that made his instincts scream at him to keep his distance.
He had faced many dangers in this world, but these butterflies carried a presence he could not ignore.
And naturally, he was not interested in finding out what would happen if one touched him.
Without hesitation, both of them reached into their space pouches at the same time. The motion was synchronized, as if they had rehearsed it countless times.
Cael’s hand emerged with a sleek, silver sword, its edge gleaming under the moonlight.
Lysa’s hand held a crimson sword, its surface shimmering with a faint red glow, as if the blood within it was still alive and pulsing.
The fight continued.
Cael moved first, his body propelled forward by a burst of wind. The air rushed past him as he closed the distance, his silver sword aimed at Lysa’s shoulder.
But she sidestepped effortlessly, her crimson sword rising to meet his attack. The swords collided with a sharp, metallic ring that echoed through the clearing.
-Clang.
Sparks erupted from the impact, illuminating their faces for a brief moment. Both of them held their ground, neither giving an inch.
Cael did not press. He stepped back, his feet barely touching the ground as wind carried him sideways.
A butterfly drifted past where he had been standing. He had avoided it by inches. The creature’s wing brushed against the air near his shoulder, and he felt a faint chill.
Lysa smiled but said nothing. She simply raised her hand, and the butterflies surged forward like a crimson tide.
Their wings beat faster, filling the air with a low humming sound.
Cael reacted instantly. A wall of wind formed in front of him, a barrier of compressed air that pushed the butterflies back.
They scattered, their wings beating against the invisible barrier, trying to find a way through. But they did not retreat.
They circled around the wind barrier, their movements fluid and coordinated, trying to flank him from both sides.
Cael moved again. Moonlight gathered beneath his feet, and he vanished from his spot.
A split second later, his afterimage appeared where he had been standing. A butterfly passed through it harmlessly, its body dissolving into mist.
-Moonlight Flash Step.
He reappeared behind Lysa, his sword aimed at her back. She spun, her crimson blade catching his strike.
The impact sent a shockwave through the air, disturbing the butterflies around them.
-Clang.
They broke apart. Cael formed a crescent of moonlight and hurled it toward her. The blade of silver light spun through the air, cutting a path through the darkness.
Lysa raised her hand, then some of the blood mist reformed into a barrier, intercepting the attack. The moonlight shattered against the crimson barrier.
The butterflies kept coming. Cael could not afford to stay in one place for more than a second.
He moved constantly, his body flickering between moonlight afterimages, his sword never stopping.
Each strike was met with a counter. Each retreat was followed by an advance.
Lysa matched his pace. Her blood control was seamless, the crimson mist responding to her will as if it were an extension of her own body.
She directed the butterflies and countered his attacks without missing a beat. Her movements were fluid, almost graceful, like a dancer performing a deadly routine.
The battle was a storm of silver and crimson.
Moonlight clashed with blood. Wind howled against the fluttering wings of the butterflies.
The ground beneath them was scarred with craters and cuts, evidence of the intensity of their exchange.
Cael’s movements were precise, each step calculated.
He could feel the strain of maintaining his form. Every dodge, every strike, every flicker of moonlight drained him.
He was a clone, after all. He did not have the same endurance as the main body.
Lysa pressed forward relentlessly. Then she formed a blood whip as she cracked it through the air, forcing Cael to weave and dodge.
But Cael formed a crescent of moonlight and hurled it toward Lysa.
She sidestepped, the blade grazing her shoulder. A thin line of red appeared on her skin, but it healed almost instantly.
The blood from the wound did not fall. It hovered in the air, merging with the mist around her.
She was regenerating. Using her own blood to fuel her attacks.
Seeing that, Cael was surprised, but he didn’t forget to copy that skill.
Then Cael pressed forward, his sword moving in a flurry of strikes. Each blow was aimed at a different angle, forcing her to block and counter.
Lysa matched his pace. Her sword moved like water, flowing around his attacks. She redirected his strikes, using his own momentum against him.
He felt the strain in his arms, the ache in his shoulders.
He stepped back, creating distance. The butterflies swarmed, but he was ready. He summoned a gust of wind that scattered them, then launched himself forward.
Their blades clashed again.
The sound of metal striking metal echoed through the clearing, sharp and relentless. Sparks flew, illuminating the fury in both their eyes.
Cael leaped into the air, wind carrying him high above the trees. He raised his hand and formed three moonlight swords, their silver edges gleaming in the darkness.
He hurled them downward like falling stars. The blades rained down on Lysa, forcing her to raise a barrier of blood to block them.
But Cael was already moving. He descended, his silver sword aimed at her head. The wind howled around him as he fell, his blade cutting through the air like a falling star.
She clashed with the silver sword with her own sword.
The force of the impact cratered the ground beneath her feet, sending cracks spider-webbing across the earth.
The pressure of their clash sent ripples through the air, scattering the butterflies that had been circling nearby.
Then Cael saw it. A single butterfly had drifted behind him. It was too close. He twisted his body, pulling his sword free and dropping to the ground.
The butterfly passed overhead, its wing brushing against his hair.
He rolled to his feet and formed a wind barrier just as a swarm of butterflies descended on his previous position.
They struck the ground, carving shallow craters into the earth. The impact sent debris flying in every direction.
Cael clicked his tongue in slight annoyance.
Actually, if Cael wanted to defeat her, it was easy for him. But sadly, he had to amuse Lysa and play along with her.
Now, Cael decided to end this.
Lysa lunged again, her crimson blade trailing blood mist. The edge of her sword glowed with a faint red light as she swung it toward him.
Cael met her strike, but this time he did not retreat. He held his ground as a flicker of violet light passed through his eyes.
-Death Reaper’s Dominion.
The skill was activated as a silent wave of oppressive energy spread outward, enveloping Lysa.
The air around her grew heavy, thick with an invisible weight.
Lysa’s rank dropped. The pressure of her [Gold 2] aura collapsed as the skill forced her down to [Silver 2].
Her body shuddered as a wave of primal fear washed over her. Her crimson eyes widened. Her grip on her sword loosened. For a moment, she looked vulnerable.
Cael smiled and said,
"Let’s end it here."
But... unknown to Cael, something went wrong.
Maybe it was because Lysa felt afraid, or maybe because she was exhausted, whatever the reason might be...
A hidden power inside Lysa had awakened.
A pulse of energy erupted from Lysa. It was not blood. It was not her aura. It was something else. Something ancient and raw.
Cael was thrown back several meters, his feet scraping against the ground as he looked forward, and his eyes widened.
Lysa’s body was surrounded by a strange, gray energy. It danced across her skin like living flames, visible to the naked eye.
The energy pulsed with a rhythm that did not match her heartbeat. It was wild, untamed, and powerful.
And on her back, a single gray wing had formed.
It was not made of blood. It was not made of light. It was something entirely different. Its edges shimmered with an otherworldly glow, and its surface seemed to ripple like water.
Lysa opened her eyes. The fear in her eyes was gone; in its place was something new.
She let out a small breath and said,
"Let’s continue."
