Chapter 1124: Chapter 1124: Continuing the Cameo

"Teacher Liu, you’re really amazing, just insanely amazing."
Xu Yino said happily.
"This was supposed to be a normal compliment, how come it sounds a bit off coming out of your mouth?" Liu Banxia said helplessly.
"Hehe, this is also very normal. Anyway, I just feel that this time you shone even brighter than before." Xu Yino said carelessly.
"Yuanyuan is really too well-behaved. If it were some other kid getting this kind of treatment, they’d definitely be crying and fussing, right? But Yuanyuan just let us do whatever we needed. Whether it was rectal tube decompression or drip enema, she cooperated really well."
"Now that the gas in the intestinal tract has been evacuated, does that mean Yuanyuan’s toxic megacolon is effectively under control?"
Liu Banxia nodded. "More or less. In the acute phase this disease progresses pretty fast. Even though we didn’t do a colonoscopy for Yuanyuan, I’d guess she already has ulcerative colitis to some extent."
"We’ll still need to keep adjusting things in that regard later on, but that won’t be our job anymore—that’ll be Dr. Chen’s. Right? That should be no problem, right?"
"It’s going to take some time. We have to be very cautious with the medication. I’m already thinking about whether we should do a follow-up colonoscopy for the kid later." Chen Hongyang said.
"Let’s forget it for now. Her intestines must be in really poor shape at the moment, and a colonoscopy would be too risky. Let’s go with conservative treatment, focus on nourishing and maintenance."
"The process will be a bit slow and a bit tough, but it’s better for her long-term outcome. We lost two years, but the impact won’t be huge."
"Hear that? Dr. Chen is the real expert in this area." Liu Banxia said with a smile.
"In a bit I’ll have someone transfer the child directly to the VIP ward upstairs. Then make sure someone is watching her EEG closely—we need her blinking time measured down to the second. The more precise, the better."
"Okay, leave that to me. Teacher Liu, you’ve got to keep working hard so we can fill all the VIP beds. Then we’ll really be set—absolutely booming." Xu Yino said.
That had Chen Hongyang laughing. At the moment there really weren’t many VIP patients. Judging by current usage, a higher proportion of them were patients referred by some of Liu Banxia’s friends.
"Director Liu, Director Liu, we finally have a definite diagnosis, I’m so happy. You have no idea—Rou is over the moon." At this moment Bao Chunlai ran downstairs again.
"Anyone would be happy in their shoes. You know more about their family—did the couple have serious conflicts before?" Liu Banxia asked.
Bao Chunlai nodded. "They’ve had some pretty nasty fights. Lei loves to gamble. He won’t gamble the whole family into ruin, but once he starts there’s no stopping him. Because of gambling, he’s delayed a lot of things."
"Okay, got it. From now on it’ll definitely be his wife spending more time with the kid. I’ll have a word with her, and you’re in charge of taking Lei away." Liu Banxia said.
"Uh... you’re not going to talk to them together?" Bao Chunlai asked in surprise.
"This also ties into the issues between the two of them. I’ll help do a bit of counseling while I’m at it." Liu Banxia improvised.
"Alright, that works. You’re pretty good at talking people through things. Doctor Tian even said you’ve got the talent to be a psychological counselor. That young couple over in Doctor Tian’s clinic just kept singing your praises."
That left Liu Banxia both amused and exasperated. "Okay, go get moving. After we get off work we’ll grab a meal together, and I’ll talk to him then."
Bao Chunlai still took this matter very seriously. No one knew what exactly he said to Wu Lei when he went over, but anyway he managed to drag Wu Lei away.
"Don’t just stand there watching. Focus on looking after Yuanyuan first, and by the way, get his wife to come to my office." Liu Banxia said.
"Hehe, you’ve definitely got something else up your sleeve."
Leaving that line behind, Xu Yino dashed out.
Liu Banxia shook his head helplessly.
He could fool Bao Chunlai, but he couldn’t fool Xu Yino.
"Director Liu, you wanted to see me? How should we take care of Yuanyuan from now on?" Wu Lei’s wife asked.
"Sit down first. Actually it’s nothing complicated—just give her all your love. Let her know that both you and your husband care about her very much. Praise her often; I think that’s enough."
"Of course, that’s just my personal take. Later on you’ll also need to find a psychological counselor to provide long-term counseling for Yuanyuan. Maybe for a year or two, maybe two or three years—you need to be mentally prepared."
Wu Lei’s wife nodded. She knew the road ahead wouldn’t be easy.
"The real reason I asked you here is still because of Yuanyuan’s condition. I need to explain a bit more to you." Liu Banxia said.
"When you get nervous, do you also feel irritable, or feel an urge to do a certain action... sigh... I’ll just be blunt."
"Judging from some of the ways you cope with stress, I think you might have shown some symptoms of OCD in the past. It just wasn’t very obvious, but once this kind of behavior slips out unintentionally, it can have an impact on Yuanyuan."
Hearing Liu Banxia’s words, Wulei’s wife froze, her face full of confusion.
"Director Liu, isn’t this just early menopause? I thought it was because I often quarrel with Lei and get so angry," Wulei’s wife said after hesitating a little.
"I’m just judging from some of your ways of coping with stress—for example, when you saw Yuanyuan’s situation and felt you couldn’t handle it. Did you feel like you had to do something to vent those emotions?"
Wulei’s wife nodded. "When I quarrel with Lei, I hide in the bathroom alone to sulk. The more I think, the angrier I get. Sometimes I hold my breath, pinch my nose and stop breathing."
"That’s more or less a bit of an OCD manifestation too. How is your relationship with Lei as a couple now?" Liu Banxia asked.
"That’s... not so easy to say," Wulei’s wife said.
"We’ve been married so many years, and a lot has happened. There haven’t really been any big things, just constant bickering. But it hasn’t gotten to the point of divorce, and we don’t have any other thoughts, we’re just worried about Yuanyuan."
"That’s good. Actually, it’s just some of the ways you behave with each other or your living habits that are having an impact. I’m not a relationship counselor, but I don’t think there’s anything fundamentally wrong with you two." Liu Banxia said with a smile.
"I’ll give you a suggestion: even if it’s not just for taking care of Yuanyuan, you can go find a psychologist to talk to. Not only about your own issues, but also about how to take care of Yuanyuan in the future—it’ll all be helpful."
"The child’s recovery will be a long process, and you two as a couple need to stay alert all the time. And in the short term, I don’t recommend sending Yuanyuan back to school. Even though she’s already of school age, start with a private tutor, or you teach her yourselves."
"Kids don’t have much sense of right and wrong. If Yuanyuan goes back to school too early, it may have a negative impact. OCD is a disease that can only be adjusted and controlled; once it runs into certain triggers, the chances of relapse are high."
"These are things you need to pay extra attention to. That’s why I say your relationship as a couple has to be well maintained; it will have a huge impact on Yuanyuan. All right, nothing else for now, go back and take care of her."
"Our VIP ward here is very good. Having you with her is much better than being in the ICU. Toxic megacolon needs two or three days of observation; it shouldn’t be a big problem."
"Thank you, Director Liu. I’ll pay more attention to this, and I’ll also find a counselor. But... do I need to tell Lei?" Wulei’s wife asked.
"That depends on your own judgment. That’s why I’m talking to you alone," Liu Banxia said.
"Some things really do need to be discussed at the right time and in the right setting. For now, only you know when that time is."
Wulei’s wife nodded, understanding the subtext in Liu Banxia’s words.
At the very least, now was not the right time. If her own issues had really caused her daughter to suffer so much, they would probably end up in another big fight.
After she left, Liu Banxia stretched in a huge yawn.
You could say he’d just moonlighted as a psychologist once, and so far the effect looked pretty good.
But there was one more reason he hadn’t mentioned: Yuanyuan’s OCD was likely influenced by genetic factors. There was no need to bring that up; the main problem for now had already been solved.
Once they made it to the end of the workday, Liu Banxia and his group headed to the cafeteria for dinner.
They’d said they wanted to let Wulei treat them to a meal, but it was just a regular cafeteria meal, which made Wulei feel this arrangement didn’t do enough to express his gratitude.
"This is good enough. Chairman Bao knows what kind of temper I have. We value genuine connection; eating and drinking are secondary." Liu Banxia said with a smile.
"Qiaoqiao just called me and said you guys bought a bunch of stuff again. I’m only in a good mood today—otherwise I’d really want to scold you."
"I know you mean well, but how are my two little ones ever going to use all this up? At least before they’re ten, they’ll never be short of little clothes and little toys, we’ve already got a ton at home."
"Haha, whether it’s a lot is your business; whether we buy it or not is ours." Wulei said with a laugh.
"But I still have to say this: after going through something like this, you should really center your life on your family," Liu Banxia said.
"I know you’re not short of money, but family is extremely important. Even when you and your wife disagree, don’t bottle it up. Your own wife and kids—you’ve got to love them like your life depends on it."
"Yuanyuan is such a good kid, just a bit older. Otherwise she could also be put on the candidate list as a future daughter-in-law for our first child. We have to start working on that now."
"Man, your kid’s only been born a few days and you’re already plotting. First you had your eye on President Qiu’s Doudou, now you’re eyeing Yuanyuan. Just wait, I’m telling Old Qiu when I get home." Bao Chunlai teased.
"Old Qiu, as in President Qiu from Binhai City?" Wulei asked with a smile.
Bao Chunlai nodded. "Those two are neighbors, close like family. The couple is always going over to the Qiu Family’s place to freeload meals."
They were just chatting idly, and they all knew Liu Banxia had already said everything that needed to be said. Whether Wulei could really take it to heart was up to him.
But Bao Chunlai figured that after going through this incident, the couple’s relationship would probably be repaired quite a bit.
