Chapter 145: Child can’t make it
Daisy took coffee from the end of the hallway which was a turn ahead from the ICU where everyone was currently waiting.
She took a sip of the coffee and sat on one of the wall-mounted chairs before she leaned back on the wall and closed her eyes.
She did not move when she heard the sound of approaching footsteps nor did she open her eyes.
Ryle’s footsteps slowed down when he saw the woman leaning back on the wall. Her face was white as paper and her eyes seemed slightly sunken with dark rings under them. Her hair was framed, a few strands falling on her face but the woman seemed unbothered. It has just been a few days but she seemed to have lost a great amount of weight, looking skinnier than she already was.
He was certain that she heard him approaching but she did not move and continued resting in that position while still holding the cup of coffee in her hand.
Ryle supported Angel’s head and sat on the chair next to Daisy.
’’Why are you here?" Daisy asked the man without opening her eyes.
Ryle was not surprised that she knew it was him without even looking at him. He did not know when it started but it was as if she knew everything about him.
’’I came across the news and came here. Since I was uncertain about the hospital, I went to the Chen Mansion first. Angel was crying and looking for you and Diana also wanted to visit the hospital so I brought them both with me.’’
But when they arrived in front of the room and heard the first part of the conversation, Ryle realized why Diana was not made a part of the whole conversation. However, it was too late. Although he wanted to take her away she did not budge in the slightest.
’Came across the news’
Not because she had called him. Not because she had texted him but because he had come across the news.
Daisy nodded and placed a coffee mug on the chair next to her before she stood up and took Angel from his arms, "When will you leave?" She questioned.
Ryle’s eyes darkened, ’’You are too eager to send me away from here.’’
’’Why would I be?’’ she looked at him indifferently, ’’You are a busy person so I won’t want to hold you back here.’’
’’Of course, I am all fun but I am not your type.’’
The man’s mocking words made her halt in her tracks.
’He is all fun and good but he is not my type.’
Those were the words Daisy had said to Diana when she had asked if she saw a future with Ryle.
When Ryle saw her pausing in her tracks, he felt slightly comforted. At least the woman still had a conscience.
That day, he remembered that he had been sitting in Daisy’s room, waiting for her to wake up while he gathered the information about Maxim’s family. When he went there to fetch the file, he heard a brief part of the conversation between both the sisters.
’You are staying with him. He seems good to you and Angel both,’ Diana had said to which Daisy responded in a crisp voice, full of surety.
’I don’t have any plans of marrying but even if I had, it would not be with him. He is all fun and good but he is not my type.’
Ryle could still remember the vivid onslaught of emotions he had felt that day when he heard those words. He did not stay there for another moment and went to work as soon as Maxim got his hands on the file and left. He did not even look for her or at her before he left.
Her words bothered him and the sole fact that they bothered him bothered even more.
’Click’
The clicking sound produced by Daisy’s heels brought Ryle out of his daze.
He glanced at her retreating back, his face darkening.
...
’’...She cut herself at the same spot again and she has damaged the wrist artery. Although she is in a better state now but she needs to be monitored properly. You can meet her after she wakes up.’’
Daisy heard the doctor speaking when she walked back to the ICU.
’’Dad, didn’t you say it was an accident?" Diana who was leaning on Maxim looked at the man, her eyes had turned swollen because of her constant crying.
All of them present over there knew that it was not an accident but Diana was determined to hear it from her father’s mouth.
’’All these years... you told us about nothing that she went through. She was suffering and we were hating her...’’ Diana stood up and walked towards the ICU as she looked at the woman who was lying lifelessly on the hospital bed. Her actions were unjustifiable to see her in such a state broke something in Diana, ’’I...’’
’’Diana!"
"Ana.’’
Maxim rushed to hold Diana when she clutched her stomach and almost fell to the floor.
’’Ah...’’ Diana’s eyes rolled back. Everything seemed to have blurred before she descended into darkness.
...
’’Doctor, how is she now?" Daisy asked the doctor the moment he walked out of the operation theatre.
’’Her condition is not optimistic. We need to deliver the child.’’
’’But it’s her seventh month only,’’ Daisy said.
’’If we continue to wait, then the child and mother both might lose their lives,’’ The doctor turned to Maxim, ’’You are the father, right?"
Ryle was standing by the side, holding an upset Angel in his arms. The girl was irritable and fussy after she woke up in the hospital.
When he heard the doctor’s words, Ryle looked over to Maxim and for the first time in his life, he saw his friend with an expression like that. As if he had lost all that he had.
’’You have to make the choice. If you proceed with the operation, the child might not survive but if we don’t then there is risk to both the mother and the child’s life. You have to make the decision...’’
’’Save her,’’ Maxim did not say another word after that.
He looked at the operation theatre quietly.
’’You have to sign these papers,’’ the doctor looked at the nurse who was accompanying her.
Maxim picked up the papers without an ounce of hesitation and signed them. There was nothing that held meaning for him if there was no Diana. She was the meaning of his life. The sole star that could not fall before him. He would protect her, cherish her, and love her till his last breath even if he had to sacrifice a piece of them.
If she lived, he lived. She was all that he needed.
Every minute seemed like a never-ending torment to everyone’s soul.
Helian Chen remained by the side, helplessly leaning on the wall with his eyes closed.
When the door to the operation theatre opened and the doctor walked out, Maxim did not stop even once as he made his way inside the room, his gaze focused on the woman on the bed.
When Daisy and the rest of the people approached the room, they witnessed the aloof man holding Diana fearfully and gently in his arms as he cried.
He cried as he buried his face in her neck and held the back of her head, ’’You fucking scared me,’’ Maxim uttered through gritted teeth, tears still rolling down his eyes.
However, the sound of his muffled cries was soon overlapped by a series of intense crying.
Everyone was stunned.
The nurses who were shocked when who they thought was the patient’s husband barged in and hugged the patient recovered their senses.
They looked at each other and smiled widely, ’’Congratulations. It’s a boy.’’
Maxim stiffened.
Diana could not move her lower body because it hurt everywhere and the man who was hugging her was careful enough to avoid that while he encased her upper body. So, she only shifted her face slightly and whispered in his ear, ’’Are you surprised, Daddy?" she kissed his cheek at an angle nobody could see, not giving him a chance to recover from his shock.
Maxim slowly sat up and looked at the child who the nurses brought over to them.
The rest of the people also entered the operation theatre which suddenly seemed more like a visiting room instead.
However, Ryle remained standing outside with Angel. It was not until the nurses cleaned the room and there was no hint of blood inside the place did he step inside. But the girl in his arms still scrunched her nose at the smell of disinfectants and buried her face in his neck, rubbing her nose on it.
Ryle stroked her back as he chuckled, ’’Meet your brother first then we will get candies for you.’’
As if she could understand his words, she rubbed her nose some more before she lifted her head and looked around curiously.
