"You… you bastards are really going to gang up on me?!" Gyokko's mind raced.

Fighting was completely out of the question. As an Upper Rank he'd killed a few Hashira before, but getting surrounded by this many at once was a first.

"Blood Demon Art: Thousand Needles — Fish Kill!"

At his call, the golden fish nearby charged the Hashira, spitting out sharp needles coated in nerve toxin to buy him time to escape.

"Haha! Scared, you fucker? If you get away today, I'll write my name Sanemi Shinazugawa backwards from now on!"

Enraged, Sanemi unleashed Wind Breathing — Eighth Form: Primary Gale Slash.

His body turned into a spinning whirlwind of blades. Wind blades shot out in every direction. Every time his figure shifted, another golden fish and its waterweed vase got shredded.

The other Hashira weren't standing around either.

They drew their Nichirin Blades from their waists or backs and sprinted to cut off every escape route Gyokko had left.

"You dare smash my vases?! Those were works of art I poured my heart into! You muscle-brained idiots will never understand the beauty of my creations. Fine then... all of you can die with my pots!" Seeing escape was nearly impossible, Gyokko decided to kill at least one of them before running.

"Blood Demon Art: Octopus Pot Hell! Blood Demon Art: Ten Thousand Slippery Sticky Fish!" Gyokko shot into a vase. Eleven more pots exploded out of the opening — ten covered in sticky-fish patterns, one covered in octopus spots.

From the sticky-fish pots poured ten thousand razor-toothed fish that shot toward the Hashira like arrows.

If only one Hashira had been here, dealing with that many would have been hell. Once a single sticky fish latched on, getting it off was nearly impossible. The things bit through skin, burrowed inside, and chewed through flesh and bone until nothing was left.

"Damn. Your abilities really are a pain in the ass." Ivan crushed the sticky fish flying at him with a flat expression, then vanished from where he stood.

When he reappeared he was already above Gyokko, blade raised. Right as he swung down, several thick sucker-covered tentacles burst from the octopus-patterned pot beside Gyokko.

They slammed Ivan away and wrapped around him tight.

"Mr. Greevs!" Mitsuri shouted in panic.

In that split second of distraction, one open-mouthed sticky fish broke through Sanemi's wind and shot straight for Mitsuri's chest. At the last moment Kyojuro yanked her aside and sliced the fish in half.

Before Mitsuri could thank him, several flashes of blade light spilled out from the surface of the giant octopus tentacles.

Ivan's voice came from inside them: "These octopus tentacles would taste pretty good grilled… as long as they're not poisonous."

The second he finished speaking, the giant octopus fell apart like a pile of building blocks and crashed to the ground.

Swoosh!

An extremely sharp blade light scraped across Gyokko's surface.

But it only hit a sticky-fish pot.

At the critical moment Gyokko had swapped places with one of the pots.

Then a pair of finned, monstrous hands tore open the vase from the inside. "Not bad. Sharp. Let's see if it can cut my head off."

Gyokko's final form looked grotesque. His body was thick with muscle and covered in scales from head to toe.

Clang!

Obanai Iguro, the Snake Hashira, ambushed from behind and was shocked to find that even his full-powered strike couldn't cut through the scales.

Gyokko twisted his head toward him and sneered, "Muhehehe! My scales are harder than diamond. Attacks as weak as yours can't even scratch me. This is the power of perfection, a body akin to a great art. But you ignorant bumpkins are too uncultured to admire it."

He reached out to grab Obanai, but the Snake Hashira slid backward like a real snake and avoided the strike.

"This is going to be troublesome…" A heavy look appeared in Obanai's heterochromatic eyes.

"Is that so? I don't buy it!"

Ivan grinned just as viciously.

Boom!

He left a deep crater in the ground, then turned his left hand into a blade and smashed it straight into Gyokko's neck. With a series of sharp cracks, the diamond-hard scales shattered on the spot. Before Gyokko could react, a glowing red Nichirin Blade punched clean through his throat.

Ivan twisted the hilt hard. Gyokko's head, along with his windpipe, went flying.

"Impossible… How could lowly creatures like you ever hurt me?!"

The head rolling on the ground still refused to accept that it had been cut off.

Ivan looked at the shocked faces around him, sheathed his blade, and spoke without any hurry. "Let's go. The Twelve Kizuki can sense when one of their own dies. We need to kill a few more before they figure it out."

As he passed Gyokko's still-yelling head, a flash of irritation crossed his face. He raised his right foot and stomped down hard.

"You talk too much. Go report to hell already."

With a wet bang, Gyokko's head exploded like a watermelon and turned to ash.

"You…" Kyojuro Rengoku stood there speechless.

...

Elsewhere, in the Asakusa district of Tokyo.

Under the moonlight, a thin figure holding dual sickles was casually slicing pedestrians apart.

The once-bright, prosperous street had turned into a river of blood, pure hell on earth. After cutting off a gunman's head, Gyutaro looked around with satisfaction and muttered, "With how hard I'm working, Lord Muzan is bound to praise me."

"Over here! It's this way!"

A shout came from the distance. Moments later a group of well-trained gunmen carefully aimed their barrels at Gyutaro standing in the middle of the street. They were soldiers sent by the shogunate to wipe out the sudden appearance of demons.

Their usual method was to blast a demon's body apart with guns, then trap the remains in special nets. Once the sun rose, the demons inside would burn to death.

The method worked well enough against ordinary demons. Regular demons couldn't stand up to the iron balls fired from the guns, and even stronger ones struggled against multiple weapons at once. So the gunmen weren't particularly afraid right now.

"Ready! Fire!"

The lead gunman saw Gyutaro standing still and immediately gave the order.

Bang! Bang!! Bang!!

Iron balls driven by gunpowder flew in scattered trajectories, completely covering Gyutaro.

He didn't dodge. He was curious just how strong something shot out of a metal tube could be.

He found out quickly.

Pshhk!

Several iron balls punched straight through his right eye and chest, tearing out large chunks of rotten flesh as they exited.

"Nice shot!" the lead gunman cheered, waving his arm.

But..
