Chapter 174: 174: Meeting Of The Upper Ranks

Her fear was not unfounded.

"Sss..." Muzan turned his head toward the wound on his left arm. White smoke kept rising between his fingers. The intense, lingering burn made his face twist in pain.

"Useless. Every single one of you is useless!"

Muzan growled under his breath. The muscles in his face kept spasming from the pain.

Pshhhk!

Thick, bright red blood slowly dripped from the tips of his right fingers onto the wooden floor.

Drip... drip...

His eyes were bloodshot. He ground his teeth so hard they creaked. His sharpened nails, now a sickly blue, sank deep into the flesh above the wound on his left arm. With a wet tearing sound, he ripped out a large chunk of charred meat mixed with blood and veins.

It splattered right in front of Nakime.

The biwa player, still kneeling on the floor, didn’t even dare look at it. Her whole body trembled. Behind the black hair covering her single large eye, there was nothing but pure panic and terror.

"Get up!" After tearing out the damaged flesh, new tissue started growing on Muzan’s left arm. The pain had lessened a little, but his rage only burned hotter.

Nakime clutched her biwa and slowly stood up on shaking legs. She kept her head down and didn’t make a sound.

Bang!

A left hand shot out and clamped around her throat, lifting her into the air. A violent gust of wind born from pure fury tore through the wooden room around them.

"Reason?!"

Nakime’s mouth filled with blood under the crushing pressure. Dark veins spread like a spiderweb from her jaw up across half her face. Her huge pupil filled with blood vessels at a visible rate.

"Ghh..."

She couldn’t make a sound. Her mouth was too full of blood.

Muzan loosened his grip slightly.

Only then could she speak.

"The Infinity Castle... moves too slowly... gh." Blood kept pouring from Nakime’s mouth, but she forced herself to continue. "It’s all my fault... my lord."

"Not your fault? Then are you saying my decisions were wrong?!" Muzan’s voice was ice cold.

Nakime knew Muzan could read the hearts of demons. She didn’t dare think anything rebellious.

"Your decisions were perfect, my lord. I simply couldn’t keep up. I delayed the fight," Nakime said quickly. She knew Muzan’s personality well. If she didn’t take all the blame herself, she would be the next one to die.

"At least you know your place."

Muzan used his other hand to brush the black hair away from Nakime’s eye. Just when she thought she might survive this, his fingers suddenly drove deep into her neck.

The sudden, brutal pain almost made her pass out.

Then she felt a cold liquid flooding into her body.

Gulp... gulp... Veins bulged and writhed on the back of Muzan’s hand. As they pulsed, massive amounts of blood poured through his fingertips straight into Nakime.

"Hantengu is dead. You’re taking his place." Muzan raised his right hand and used his sharp index finger to carve the words [Upper Rank Four] directly into Nakime’s eye. The entire process was excruciating, but Nakime didn’t make a single sound. She was too terrified of angering him further.

When he finished carving, he dropped her.

She hit the floor hard. Puh! A huge amount of blood and pieces of her own tongue came spilling out of her mouth.

"Summon every Upper Rank here. Now."

Muzan didn’t even spare her another glance. He sat down in his chair, closed his eyes, and focused on checking the damage inside his own body.

Nakime picked up her biwa from the floor with trembling hands.

Twang... twang...

The clear, elegant sound of the biwa spread outward like ripples on water. In an instant, the buildings centered around Nakime began flipping and folding in on themselves.

Whoosh!!

Figures suddenly appeared all across the Infinity Castle.

In the northeast lotus district, a figure with white oak-colored hair and smiling eyes stepped onto a short bridge from mid-air. He lightly shook the iron fan in his hand. Several blooming white lotuses were engraved on the fan’s surface. "How unexpected. That Hantengu guy actually got killed."

Even though his words sounded surprised, his expression didn’t change at all. A gentle smile stayed on his lips.

The next second, space rippled and he vanished from where he stood.

In the southeast martial arts hall, a man with short peach-pink hair and dark blue tattoos covering his upper body was throwing punches at the air. His red short robe hung open, exposing his muscular torso. Every punch he threw created a sharp crack in the air.

"Random Form, Empty Form, Foot Form, Shatter Form, Annihilation Form, Final Form."

His attacks were precise and fast. Every move carried his understanding of ancient martial arts. When the final form landed, the entire hall and the stone floor beneath it were left in ruins. Hearing the biwa’s call, he stepped across broken tiles and headed toward the center of the Infinity Castle.

Along the way, a colorful vase covered in flower patterns rolled right in front of him.

The vase made a sharp clink as it bounced up and stood upright on the wooden floor.

"Oh my, what perfect timing. You’re still as energetic as ever. I’m so happy to see you. It’s been what, almost ninety years since we last met?" A wisp of black smoke rose from the vase’s mouth and quickly took solid form. The figure was completely white and had a very strange appearance.

His mouth was where his eyes should have been. Green lips opened and closed.

Akaza ignored Gyokko completely and kept walking.

The corridor in front of him twisted like a scrambled Rubik’s Cube. Soon he and Gyokko reached the center of the Infinity Castle.

"My my~ Lord Doma, it’s wonderful to see you again." Gyokko had a vertical yellow eye on his forehead with the kanji for Upper Rank Two. His other eye was on his tongue, marked with the kanji for Five.

"Gyokko~ That new vase of yours looks pretty good. Didn’t you give me one before? I used it to grow a woman’s head inside. I have to say, it makes an excellent decoration," Doma said cheerfully.

Under the light, his pupils were rainbow-colored. The left one had the kanji for Upper Rank and the right one had the kanji for Two.

"A vase isn’t meant for growing human heads... but I suppose that’s not a bad idea either." Gyokko was a little unhappy at first — in his eyes, his vases were the most beautiful works of art in the world. How could they be used for something else? But then he imagined a beautiful woman’s head sitting on top of the vase.

That actually sounded pretty good.

Thinking about it, several small arms grew out from his neck and started clapping for Doma’s brilliant idea.

"Am I late, everyone?" A scruffy-looking guy with messy grass-green hair pushed open a wooden door and stepped out. His skin was a pale gray and he was extremely thin, especially around the waist — it looked like it was only as wide as a fist. A strong wind might snap him in half.

He was quite ugly, with black spots all over his face and body.

"Oh, it’s Gyutaro. I don’t think you’ve ever been to the Infinity Castle before, right?" Doma said with a friendly smile.

"That’s right, Lord Doma." Gyutaro replied with a smile.
