Chapter 5: Zero Healing

Lyra didn’t offer her hand, and she certainly didn’t offer me something like a healing potion.

Well, it’s not like I was expecting anything anyway. To her, I was just a bloody GPS that happened to have a pulse.

So, without waiting for me to stand up, she grabbed me by my collar and hauled me up like I weighed nothing.

As she forced me up, the air around us suddenly began to feel biting cold and sharp.

The grass on the ground, which had been completely dry, began to glisten as it soaked up moisture like morning dew in a split second.

’This is—?’

I looked up at Lyra’s eyes and noticed that they were glowing with blue light. And faint, snowflake-like patterns were visible in her pupils, which were spinning slowly.

Witnessing all this, I came to the conclusion that she was just activating her movement technique to dash forward while dragging me along, but I was proven wrong the next instant.

The cold air wasn’t there to give her a boost, it was there for me.

As the cold hit the wounds on my face, they began to heal... No, it wasn’t as simple as healing. Since the gashes and cuts were being forced shut by a layer of frost.

It seemed more similar to cauterization, but with ice instead of fire. Soon, the screaming pain in my jaw vanished and it went numb. Now, even when I touched it with my hand, I couldn’t feel the pain on my jaw.

This was ’Zero Healing,’ an ability she usually reserved for herself during high-intensity battles to ignore fatal injuries and keep fighting. It was a brutal, yet effective way to stay standing when your body should be falling.

But I couldn’t understand why she was using it on me. I remembered from the novel that this cost her a massive amount of mana because it wasn’t her primary specialty since she was a fighter, not a healer.

’So why?’ I thought as my brows furrowed together, and as if Lyra had heard my thoughts, she began to speak up.

"Don’t lose your mind," she said and finally let go of my collar. As she did that, I stumbled for a moment but forced myself not to fall again.

"I just don’t want you to die before I find Clara." She finished.

’That’s why.’

By freezing my wounds, she ensured I could run on my own two feet and wouldn’t be a dead weight she had to carry.

I didn’t mind the cold, but the most important thing to me; the violet rifts, were already widening, and the first screeches of the flying monsters were beginning to echo off the academy walls.

I just hoped she had enough mana left to get us through the monsters waiting for us between here and the Sunken Garden.

"Now, let’s move," she said and, without waiting for a response from me, she simply pivoted and began running.

My legs were sore, my lungs felt heavy, and I didn’t seem to have much strength left in me, yet I gritted my teeth and began running after her.

Because the fear of dying in a place where I didn’t belong and being erased as a trash extra was far more terrifying than any trivial physical pain.

So, I moved with everything I had.

Lyra wasn’t only quick; she was fast, monstrously fast. If she wanted, she could have vanished into the distance in seconds, but she was trying to match my speed and was just a few paces ahead.

I didn’t delude myself into thinking it was out of concern. I knew she wasn’t sticking with me because she believed my story.

She was keeping me close so that the moment we arrived at the Sunken Garden and she found it empty, she wouldn’t have to waste time searching for me to kill me.

We rounded the corner and the reality of this world finally hit us. The air was thick with the smell of blood and the peaceful academy atmosphere was gone.

It was now replaced by a cacophony of shattering glass, destroyed grounds, and high-pitched shrieks of monsters.

"Gah!"

A shadow darted from the top of the tree above us. It was an imp, small, purple-skinned, and grinning with too many sharp teeth.

"Shit,"

I didn’t even have time to flinch when its claw instantly lunged toward my throat.

Schwing.

Suddenly, a flash of blue-white light flickered past my ear.

The imp didn’t even get to scream, as it simply turned into a frozen statue mid-air before shattering against the pavement.

"Don’t slow down," Lyra hissed. "If we get surrounded, we are dead."

I just nodded because my throat was too dry to form any words.

There were less than a few minutes left before the sky fully opened. If that happened, then Lyra’s mana would be drained by the sheer volume of monsters, and I would be nothing more than a snack for them.

It would have been no problem if she were alone and didn’t have to protect me. Without my dead weight, she could simply flash-step across the grounds.

But now, it was going to be difficult even for her. So, I had to think of a way to get to the garden without encountering the big swarm of beasts.

But if we stayed on this path, we would hit the bottleneck at the Great Bridge. It was a place where thirty students were slaughtered in the first sixty seconds because of too many monsters being there.

’We can’t keep going this way... Think... Think... I have to think of a way...’

I ran my mind through everything I remembered about the academy’s layout.

’Which is the safest way to reach there...?’
