Chapter 4: The Necklace
Clack!
The sound of the leather-bound book snapping shut was sharp. Lyra didn’t jump or gasp at my sudden appearance. She didn’t even look at my face at first.
Her frigid blue eyes looked at my boots, and then at the dust on my clothes. Her gaze lingered for a second on my torn sleeve and the fresh smeared blood that stained my skin.
To anyone else, I would have been a dying man who needs immediate medical help. But to Lyra Y Astrea, I was just a messy interruption who made her stop reading.
Gradually, her gaze drifted up to meet mine.
However, her expression wasn’t shocked. It was entirely neutral. To her, seeing ’Cian the Trash’ covered in bruises and blood wasn’t a big thing.
Since getting beaten within an inch of my life was practically my character description in this academy before dying.
"Cian von Heist," finally, her lips parted and she spoke up. Still, her voice was as cold as a frozen lake. Moreover, she didn’t ask if I was okay or who did this to me.
"What are you doing here?"
The question wasn’t about my injuries; it was about my presence. This was her private time to study the flow of mana without being bothered by the insects of the lower classes.
The fact that I was bleeding on her lawn was clearly a secondary concern compared to the fact that I was disturbing her free time.
I coughed a little just to make sure a bit of blood hit the grass. I needed to play this perfectly. Because she wasn’t a hero who moved just to save someone like me.
"If you leave right now," she continued, as her voice dropped with each word, "I will not freeze your remaining limbs for disturbing my reading. Consider it mercy."
She meant every word she said. Lyra was the type of person who didn’t care about the weak. In her world, if you weren’t strong enough to stand, you didn’t deserve to take up space.
I knew her personality better than she knew herself. Helping a half-noble like Cian wasn’t even on her radar.
She only cared about one thing: power, and the preservation of the environment that allowed her to practice it.
"The... monsters..." I clutched my chest and made it look as if my heart was about to stop. "It is not Kaelen... It isn’t the bullies. Look at the sky, Lyra. Look at the things in the air. There are monsters."
I said that, but she didn’t even tilt her head up to look at the violet cracks forming above.
She didn’t believe a word coming out of my mouth. In her mind, people like ’Cian’ were born plotters and liars, pathetic creatures who relied on fabrication to bait the strong into helping them.
She saw my blood and my warnings as nothing more than a cheap lie to earn a moment of her protection from bullies.
I knew exactly what she was thinking. Her disdain was so thick I could practically feel it on my skin. If I wanted her to move, I couldn’t appeal to her humanity; I had to appeal to her possessions.
"Forget me," I continued while taking fake deep breaths to make myself seem more pathetic, "but Clara... She is... She is being chased by one of those things. The monsters..."
The mention of the name Clara caused the first crack to appear in her expression. It wasn’t worry but irritation. Clara was one of the few people Lyra actually tolerated. She was a quiet girl who was likely the only person this Ice Empress could call a friend.
Of course, Lyra still didn’t believe my words, but she couldn’t ignore the possibility of a threat to her only genuine connection.
I reached into my pocket and retrieved a small silver chain with a sapphire teardrop.
As soon as Lyra’s eyes caught a glimpse of it, her entire posture stiffened and, for a split second, her eyes widened slightly.
This is it.
In the novel, this necklace was retrieved by Clara from Cian’s corpse after it had fallen out of his pocket when the monster had crushed him.
It must be something he had likely stolen or found earlier in the Chapter.
The sight of this necklace was the ultimate confirmation that my lie was working. In her head, the only way I could have this was if I had been near Clara when the chaos started.
"Where?" Lyra muttered, and the air around us dropped to freezing point in an instant.
"The Sunken Garden," I responded. "She ran toward the garden to lose the monsters. But there are too many."
"If she isn’t there," Lyra leaned in closer and whispered into my ear, "I will freeze you where you stand... and shatter you."
Hearing that, a faint smile appeared at the corner of my mouth.
That’s it.
