Chapter 2: The Price of Survival
The Hero’s fist was already shining with golden mana. He was pulling his hand back for the strike that left the original Cian von Heist half dead on the grounds.
However, I didn’t flinch at the sight of his attack. Rather, I looked him dead in the eyes and spoke.
"Hey, you shit."
My voice was no more than a mutter since it was so difficult to even speak. Slowly, I dragged myself up from the ground, using the base of a marble pillar to steady my shaking legs.
"What was your name again? Elian? Kaelen? Whatever. Try me. If you don’t love your life, go ahead and swing."
The courtyard went deathly silent in an instant. The silver-haired prick, Kaelen, paused his hand, and even the students who had been laughing and whispering paused.
In the original, this was the part where Kaelen delivered a final, mocking line and left Cian to rot. But that was Cian, not me.
"You... you’ve finally lost your mind," Kaelen spoke up and pulled his fist back even further. The crowd also leaned in as they eagerly anticipated a finishing move.
’Any second now,’ I thought, looking past him at the sky. ’Do it. Open up.’
I knew how this scene was written. In the book, Kaelen would leave, the sky would crack open, and a monster would land right on top of Cian’s unconscious body, crushing him into a red smear.
Then, just as the monster charged toward Kaelen, a teacher would conveniently appear to save the hero’s life.
The story claimed the teacher was coming to save Cian, but was just a second too late.
’What a load of bullshit.’
If I stayed on the ground, I would be someone who would be used to awaken Kaelen. I would be the blood on the pavement that would make the hero look tragic.
All of that is unacceptable. I wasn’t going to be a footnote in his legend. I would make him pay the price of my survival.
"Die, you trash!" Kaelen roared as his mana-infused fist lunged toward me.
He must be expecting me to cower and close my eyes in fear. But I did the exact opposite of that.
After gathering every bit of strength left in my body, I moved. As his fist was dashing toward me, I threw my weight to the left and grabbed his silk-covered forearm with both of my shaking hands.
For a fraction of a second, my grip faltered. Still, I didn’t let go and tightened it. Then, using the force of his own lunge, I yanked him forward, straight into the exact center of the courtyard.
"What are you—?!" Kaelen’s balance broke under the sudden pull and he stumbled onto the ground.
My back also slammed against the pillar as I shoved him into the precise spot where I had been lying moment ago.
To the crowd, it looked like a desperate and clumsy struggle. But to me... it was a death sentence.
’Now.’ I thought and instantly the sky began to tear apart.
CRACK—!
A violet rift split the sky wide open. Kaelen, still disoriented, looked up just in time to see the sun vanish behind a massive shadow.
It had only been two minutes since I had woken up in this nightmare. However, it would take more than ten minutes for the rifts to fully stabilize for a full invasion.
But two minutes was all it took for the first wave of monsters to break through.
A massive, green-skinned hand, which was as thick as a tree trunk, forced its way out of the violet light.
’That is it.’
I smiled and began moving. I didn’t wait, nor did I care to see the Hero get crushed and realize that his so-called main character protection had just expired.
With every ounce of strength left in my battered body, I forced my legs forward. My vision blurred from time to time and it was getting difficult to breathe. Yet I didn’t stop.
By the fifth step, the ground beneath me began to tremble. It wasn’t just the sky that was tearing open. The dungeons were appearing too.
And by the eighth step, a shadow so vast appeared that it swallowed the sun, engulfing the courtyard with darkness.
After taking exactly ten steps away, I stopped and turned around.
Behind me, the students stood frozen. They were caught between terror and a desperate, fragile hope while waiting for their Hero to stand, for Kaelen to shine, perhaps.
BOOM!
Suddenly, the whole ground shook heavily as a cloud of pulverized marble and red mist erupted outward.
All of this happened because an orc landed on the ground from the sky. And this time its massive weight didn’t crush my chest.
It slammed directly onto Kaelen’s legs.
"ARGHHHH—!"
His scream was really so much louder for someone so arrogant.
Just a moment ago, he was acting so high and mighty, but now, in his place was something fragile, screaming in the dirt as a monster pinned him down like he was nothing.
The expression of the surrounding students shattered in an instant, since their hope had collapsed into despair.
The one who was supposed to be one of the strongest among them couldn’t even stand anymore.
I already knew what came next. His sister would scream now, the teacher would arrive, and the last-second rescue would happen.
So, I didn’t waste any more time and began to run further away from that place. Not because I was scared, but because I had to do something as fast as possible.
Since I had no blue screen floating in front of me or any voice that whispered in my mind.
The universe or this transmigration wasn’t offering me any kind of cheats.
"If I don’t have a system..." I muttered, my voice was so low that it was lost beneath the distant screams, "then I will just have to use the only thing it couldn’t take from me."
Memory.
Every spoiler. Every hidden item. And every broken piece of information that fans had complained about. I knew all of it.
If this world was going to play dirty, then I would play worse.
And while everyone else was still frozen, staring at the fallen hero, something far worse was waking up in the Sunken Garden of the Academy.
"She’ll be there..."
