Chapter 1: Cian von Heist

’Urg.’

Everything in front of my eyes was dark. My jaw didn’t just hurt, it was screaming with intense pain as if someone had thrown an iron rod at my face.

The last thing I remembered was sitting in my office, trying to meet the impossible expectations of my boss.

But now, I could feel a cold surface against my cheek.

That was the problem. It was the middle of a sweltering summer, and the air conditioning in my office had been broken for a week.

So how could I feel this kind of chill? It didn’t make even a bit of sense to me.

And more importantly, who the hell hit me? I am a nobody. I have never even looked at anyone’s girlfriend, let alone done something wrong to one.

So how? And why?

There was only silence in my ears and my eyelids felt so heavy that I couldn’t even open them. If only... if only I could open them even a little bit, then at least I would have been able to see what the heck was happening.

"Hey," suddenly, I felt a hand grab my collar and lift me upward. My face left the cold surface and now my feet were dangling in the air. "How dare a filthy half-noble like you even look at my sister?"

Half noble? Who?

I tried to open my eyes to look at whoever the hand lifting me up belonged to, but it took way too much strength, like I was trying to lift a mountain with my eyelashes alone.

However, after quite a bit of effort, I managed to open my left eye just a tiny bit. Though it was blurry, I was able to see a faint image.

A guy with shimmering silver hair was standing in front of me. One of his hands was grabbing my clothes and his other hand was pulled back.

’What is he doing?’

My brain was so scrambled and I was so confused that I couldn’t even process what he was trying to do and what kind of danger awaited me.

Slap!

A heavy and painful slap landed right on the side of my face and made my head turn around. My cheek was hurting too much that the eye I had barely managed to open closed again.

"Is that it? Is that all the great ’trash’ of the Von Heist family can do?"

His voice followed right after the hit. Not only was it loud, it was also arrogant. It sounded like it belonged to someone who had never been told ’no’ in their entire life.

But I didn’t have the luxury to think about others’ lives since my own head was ringing like crazy and my legs and arms were shaking slightly.

Yet, the anger, confusion, and curiosity about the bitch who was hitting me didn’t fade away. Once again, I forced one of my eyes to open.

God knows why, but this time the blurriness had vanished completely and I could see somewhat clearly.

Just like before, I saw the silver hair again. But this time I was able to see more than that. This guy wasn’t wearing just any normal clothes, rather he had some silk fantasy uniform which I had only imagined while reading novels.

Moreover, he wasn’t alone. A crowd of students was standing in the background around us. They were whispering and laughing about something I couldn’t even understand.

’W-wait... Silver hair? Half-noble?’

It wasn’t long before my eyes widened and I came to realize what kind of situation I was really in.

’This isn’t...’

A specific Chapter from a novel I had stayed up all night reading flashed through my mind. That was when my heart skipped a beat.

The guy in front of me looked exactly like the ’Hero’ from the novel Hero of Aetheria. Those same shimmering silver hairs and the eyes that looked down on everyone like they were insects under his boot.

The same protagonist the entire fandom hated for the first half because he was such an insufferable, arrogant bully before the world went to hell.

’It... can’t be.’

There is no way.

Right?

I forced my other eye open to take a look at myself. If the hero was in front of me, then I was...

I glanced down at my hands. They were pale, thin, and covered in dust. My clothes weren’t my cheap office suit. They were now a tattered, low-quality version of the same clothes the others were wearing.

Now, I understood. This wasn’t my office. Nor was it the suffocating summer heat. I had become someone else and that someone was...

Cian von Heist.

The name was like a second slap to my face. Because it wasn’t just a random student. If it was, then it would have been better, but no.

I was the infamous ’Half-Noble’. The guy whose only purpose in the entire story was to be a punching bag in the prologue to show how ’arrogant’ and ’dominant’ the shitty hero was.

’What the hell is this? Even dreams have limits.’

And this dream was going way too far by making me this short-lived character in the entire novel. Also, the pain I was feeling was too sharp and the taste of blood in my mouth also seemed too real.

Whatever, I just need to wake up. I have to get up and finish that report before my boss comes in to nag me about productivity and synergy. If I didn’t turn it in by evening, the only thing hitting my face would be a termination letter instead of a slap.

’I will close my eyes and try to wake up.’

I squeezed my eyes shut in an attempt to wake up from this dream and began counting.

One...

Two...

As my eyes were closed and I was just focusing on waking up, the hero’s voice reached my ears.

"Are you ignoring me? You really are as pathetic as the rumors say, Cian."

I just didn’t pay any attention to him and continued what I was doing. However, before I could open my eyes and be free from this nasty dream, my head was slammed onto the ground.

"ARGH!"

My eyes shot open from the unbearable pain. The impact rattled my brain and for a second everything turned black and white. All the hope of waking up in a sweaty office vanished and was now replaced by this painful reality.

"What’s the matter, trash?"

The hero bitch’s figure was looming over me. While he was hitting me, he hadn’t even broken a sweat. Even his hand, which was gripping my neck, didn’t have a single tremble.

"Lost your tongue along with your dignity? You were so brave when you were ’accidentally’ walking near my sister’s training grounds."

At his words and at my state, the students gathered around us began to snicker. I could see that all of them had a higher status than me. Their uniforms were tailored, their boots were polished, and their faces carried that specific, effortless arrogance that only comes from generational wealth.

Unlike them, I was on the ground and I was the only one covered in dust.

"Look at him," a girl in the back whispered. She didn’t even bother to hide her amusement. "He’s actually shaking. Is he going to cry?"

"He’s probably wondering which of his ’noble’ ancestors to pray to," another boy chimed in, leaning against a marble pillar behind him. "Too bad none of them would claim a mistake like him."

The mockery may have been loud, but to me it felt distant. I didn’t care about the sister. I didn’t even care about the Hero’s fist that was going to wind up for a strike at any moment.

My eyes subconsciously drifted toward the sky. Right now, it was clear and peaceful. And that was what I worried about the most.

Because I knew, in just a few minutes, the sky was going to tear apart and monsters, demons, and different races were going to fall from it.

The first breakout of the apocalypse was going to happen right here, in the middle of this very courtyard where I was getting bullied.

And in the original story, Cian von Heist, which is now me, didn’t survive the first wave of monsters. He was left bleeding on the ground while the ’Hero’ made his grand escape.

But...

I am not in the mood for dying today.
