Chapter 49: I’m Not Going With You
"What did I just see you two doing when I walked in here?" She asked, suspicion staining her tone.
"Nothing!" Arianna replied almost too fast. "He slipped on his blood and fell. I managed to catch him before he fell to the ground."
Daemon gave himself a once over. He was clearly twice her weight, and even if he fell, there was no way on God’s land she would be able to catch him.
He grinned when he saw her ears go red in embarrassment.
Josephine however, still wasn’t convinced.
She squinted her eyes on him as if she knew something but couldn’t prove it.
Daemon waved her off as he snaked his arms around Arianna’s waist, startling her.
"Let’s go? This office smells," he said.
Arianna glanced between Josephine and him, before she nodded.
He escorted her out of the office and through what seemed to be a living room.
This was a house.
Unlike other kidnappers who would take their hostages to a warehouse, Levi had brought her to a house.
If it was his, she couldn’t tell.
Once they stepped out of the house, she saw mountains of corpses laying everywhere.
Most of them were of men dressed in the same tacky way as the dread man she’d killed earlier.
They were the kidnappers.
A container of diesel was poured on them and they were immediately set ablaze.
The fire engulfed the entire corpses.
Arianna turned back at the entrance to find the dread man being dragged like a rag doll by one of the soldiers, and with a single toss, he joined his colleagues.
"Isn’t this amount of flame going to gain attention?" Arianna asked Josephine.
"This is actually a secluded property built in the middle of nowhere. I doubt anyone will notice, and even if they did, they won’t know we’re burning a bunch of dead bodies here."
Arianna nodded in understanding.
It suddenly went eerily silent, as the song of bones cracking in the red flame could be heard.
For some reason, she was relieved that she was saved.
Naturally, Josephine would rescue her with the help of the chips.
She glanced at the 6’5 man standing right next to her, towering over her like a damn tree.
Standing so close to him made her realize just how tall he was.
Not like she was short. 5’8 was pretty tall for a woman, but Daemon made her look so average sized.
"Anything on your mind, my love?" He asked her.
She quickly faced forward, her eyes landing on the red flame.
"We have to go home now. Everyone is so worried about you, and I haven’t even told them yet that you’re safe," said Josephine.
Daemon’s face instantly turned sour when he heard her words.
Arianna was going back to her house, especially after what she’d gone through that night? He wasn’t going to allow it.
"I think it’s best that she stays over at my place tonight. It’s safer. She just escaped something really traumatic, it must have taken a toll on her body." His dark eyes lazily landed on her, scanning her body.
Her lips were still slightly bruised up from what seemed to be a smack to the face. The tight rope had left behind a red imprint on her wrist as well.
Josephine scoffed as she cursed under her breath.
"Do you think your place is safer?" She bit the question through her teeth. "Are you forgetting she’s in this condition because of you? Now that both of you are together, your enemies are going to come after her just to get to you."
Frederick glanced at her from his peripheral vision.
She was obviously boiling in rage. She didn’t blame her. Arianna was kidnapped and almost raped by several men.
That was enough to send her family member’s blood pressure shooting off the roof.
"Maybe the safest place is away from you," she spat.
Daemon reared back as if he’d been slapped in the face.
Josephine was truly a pain in the neck, but he couldn’t deny the fact that she was right.
It was his fault that Levi had come after Arianna, and there was no guarantee that he wouldn’t come after her again.
"I’m sure that by now, he knows her address. He’ll come again if he wants to—"
"Then we’ll buy another house," she replied. "You think your house is better because you have tons of security guarding the place? Well, it isn’t."
Daemon gritted his teeth. He knew where Josephine was coming from, but there was no reason for her to speak on her sister’s behalf.
He completely ignored her existence and marched towards Arianna who’d been watching the whole interaction in silence.
"Come home with me," he pleaded.
"No," she replied without hesitation, as if she’d been expecting him to ask her the questions directly. "I’ve gone through enough today and the last thing I want is to be close to you."
Her words felt like daggers stabbing his chest.
They were just words, but they hurt greater than the gunshot wound on his chest that was throbbing in pain after moving so much.
Then she turned to leave.
Josephine followed right behind her, and so did their men.
Daemon was left standing in his spot as a gush of wind suddenly blew over him. Then a thunderstorm hit.
"We need to return, it’s going to rain soon," Frederick screamed out. "A few of you should stay here and make sure the rain doesn’t leave any of their ashes behind."
The soldiers are nodded in sync.
Then he touched Daemon on the shoulders.
"We have to leave," he said.
Daemon gritted his teeth.
This was all Levi’s fault. If only the latter hadn’t shown up that day, then Arianna would have been at his place
Daemon turned to Frederick.
"Make sure you find him. I don’t care how long it takes, but find him."
Frederick quickly nodded his head.
Back at Arianna’s home...
"That bastard thinks he can make you go to his house all in the name of wanting to keep you safe." She groaned as she walked towards the kitchen cabinet and pulled out a first aid kit. "For all we know, he might try to finish the job." Then she paused, as if everything just made sense to her. "For all we know, he might be the one who sent that dude to kidnap you and was just waiting for the right chance to kill you off himself. I bet he didn’t know you had a tracking chip in you so he was disappointed when he heard me say I knew your location."
Arianna turned to Josephine.
"You told him I had a chip in me?"
"Of course not. I don’t trust that guy at all."
Arianna’s lips paused, her mind flashing back to the look on his face when she’d told him she wasn’t going home with him.
He looked hurt, really hurt.
They may be married, but it was all fake and there was no reason for him to want to take her home. Maybe to keep her safe. But then again, it was his fault that she was in that situation in the first place.
Josephine opened the first aid kit and started treating Arianna’s injuries.
"Was I too harsh on him?" She mumbled out loud enough for Josephine to hear her. "He saved me right before that sleazy dog could rape me."
Josephine paused for a second.
"It all depends on you," she responded.
Arianna stared at her with a cocked eyebrow, wondering what she meant.
"How did you feel after saying that to him?" She asked. "If you feel regretful, then you might have been too harsh. But then again, you can’t be too sure. Daemon can’t be trusted. He may have helped us, rescued you a few times, but that’s not enough to make him less suspicious. He’s still the son of father’s enemy."
Arianna nodded in understanding.
The entire conversation she’s had with Daemon came crashing into her mind like a flood.
He’d always been gentle with her and while they’ve been alone, even back at his house after she collapsed in the ring, he didn’t hurt her.
He’s had several opportunities to, but he never took it.
"Fuck!" She cursed when she felt a sting on her wrist. "Take it easy will you?"
Josephine gave a sheepish smile before she continued.
When she was done, she packed up the kit and took it back to the kitchen cabinet.
"Please go take a shower now. You smell like you haven’t touched soap in years." Then she facepalmed herself. "Should have asked you to do that much earlier before treating the cuts. When you’re done, come back down. I need to call father and tell him you’re safe now."
Arianna nodded.
She took a sniff of her shoulders and nearly threw up.
The dread man had licked her like she was candy with his buttery teeth. She quickly stood up from the couch and bolted upstairs to take a shower.
Josephine watched her disappear before she placed her father on a call.
