Chapter 159: Imperfect Day: Hannah
I never thought there would be a point in my life where I would be sad to finish a workout, but living with Roman was proving to make that a reality. While I always looked forward to breakfast and a shower, I knew that the last of the workout marked the end of our morning together. While we would do the rest our routine together, we always were in a slight rush.
I just was stunned that I still hadn’t tired of him. I had grown up on the idea that spouses sort of disliked one another, or at least tried to minimize their time together. Yet there Roman and I were, practically addicted to one another.
I couldn’t imagine being one of those stereotypical couples that sort of resented one another. He made me happy. Why would I want to be away from him?
"What are you thinking about?" Roman asked as we shared breakfast.
"Huh? Oh," I muttered. I hadn’t even realized just how lost in thought I was.
I shot him a cheeky smile. "Just how much I love you."
"Aw, how cheesy," he teased and kissed my cheek.
"Oh, sorry. Would you rather be one of those stereotypical sit-com couples?" I asked, letting him into the thoughts I was having that morning.
He wrapped an arm about my waist and kissed my shoulder. "Maybe Ricardo and Lucy," he suggested. "Or Gomez and Morticia."
He extended my arm out and kissed down to my palm and then back up. I giggled and narrowed my eyes at him. "Or maybe Pepe Le Pew and that cat."
"Depends," he chuckled, dropping my hand. "Are you going to make me chase you like that cat? Or are you going to embrace it like Morticia?"
"Only one way to find out," I stated, my voice coming off as more suggestive than anything else.
I saw his eyes sparkle with desire and his gaze shift down to my lips.
He leaned in and gave me a few sweet kisses, and then let out a sigh as he pulled back. He didn’t have to say anything for me to take the hint. As much as we wanted to spend the day rolling around in bed together, we had things to do and I was sure he had a slammed schedule of meeting after meeting.
We moved to the room and I climbed into the shower. Much to my surprise, Roman stepped in with me. Usually he would lay out his outfit and send off a few emails while I showered, and then he would take his turn.
I looked up to him, and he kissed me. We made out in the steamy water, and I felt his hand slip between my legs. He fingered me briefly before he turned me around and bent me over.
We had a hot and steamy quickie. We just couldn’t keep our hands off each other, could we? It felt like any time we were around one another more than a few minutes, we were going at it like animals.
Not like I minded. I loved our sex life and was more than happy that it was still thriving.
"What’s come over you?" I asked him with a smirk on my face after we finished and actually got to the cleaning portion of the shower.
"Just can’t seem to keep my hands off of you," he purred, kissing my neck.
"Seems like that isn’t all you can’t keep off me," I teased.
We both laughed and finished up before getting out of the shower. I headed into the closet and after a quick look at the weather for the day, decided on a pair of skinny jeans and a sweater to go with it.
I had interviews that day with a good portion of the counselors, and I was happy to give off a more relaxed look. I didn’t want them to feel intimidated, and I couldn’t really see the women who would benefit from the charity caring at all what the counselors wore. Honestly, them dressing down would likely make them more accessible to the women.
I walked into the bathroom and started the process of drying my hair, putting on some earrings, and freshening myself up. Roman, already fully ready, came up behind me and hugged my waist. "Aren’t you a sight for sore eyes," he called over the sound of the hair dryer.
"Don’t be a kiss-ass," I kidded.
He smiled and kissed the top of my head before walking out of the bathroom.
Once I finished dressing, we headed for the door, only stopping to pick up our coffee mugs from Geoffrey.
"I think Geoffrey deserves a raise," I said as we got into the car.
"Oh, you think so huh?"
I nodded and shrugged. "He just takes so much off of our plate and never complains."
"That’s what he’s already paid to do," Roman smiled and rested a hand on my knee. "I promise, he’s paid handsomely and doesn’t mind a thing."
"If you say so," I sang song. The drive into town was peaceful until we reached downtown. It was stop and go traffic, even worse than normal.
I peered around. "Do you think there’s something going on today?"
"It is fall. Might have some sort of festival going on," Roman suggested. He then smiled over at me. "Maybe if I can get off work a little early, we can go together, if that is the case."
"Oh yeah?" I beamed. "That sounds fun. My last interview today is at three."
"I can make that work," he nodded.
I looked up events going on in town, and sure enough, there was a festival. "Looks like it’s a music and beer fall festival," I read off to him. "There will be food trucks, live music, and classic fall favorites like candied apples, pumpkin carving, and even a hayride around the park."
"Sounds just cheesy enough for the both of us," he chuckled.
"Right you are," I laughed.
It was feeling like we were going to have a perfect day. I was hopeful that I would find my head counselor that day, I would be calling to start construction, we had had morning shower sex, and I would be leaving early to have a night at a festival with my husband. What could be better than all of that?
"I’m running late," Roman sighed as we pulled into the charity’s parking lot. "D*mn traffic," he muttered.
"It’s okay. I’ll see you at three-thirty?" I asked with a beaming smile.
He smiled and nodded. "See you at three-thirty." He looked around and spotted Nick’s car before kissing me goodbye. I stepped out of the car and waved goodbye.
As I watched his car pull away, the world seem to freeze. There was a black car on the corner again.
My frustration overflowed. I was going to get to the bottom of this. I walked a few steps forward and took note of the license plate. It started with JGK. I could remember that. If I saw a black car around the charity again with a license plate that started with that, it would be enough for me to bring it up to Roman.
I took a few more steps forward. There was a driver in there, but there was a tint on the windows, so it was hard to make him out.
I had half the mind to walk over to the car and bang on the window and ask what they wanted from me. Why were they hanging around so much? Did they have business with me and were just shy? Why would someone be following me?
The only thing I could think of was the Auction House, but they had been taken down. Right?
I swore I saw the head of the driver turn in my direction, and my blood ran cold. I still couldn’t make out the details of the face, but I could feel their stare on me.
Just as I opened my mouth to call over to them, a hand touched my shoulder. I couldn’t hold back the yelp that escaped me from the shock of being touched.
I looked up to Nick and couldn’t help but glare. "Don’t scare me like that."
"Sorry," he muttered. "You okay?"
I looked back to the black car and eyed it a little longer. Suddenly, I wasn’t sure if I was able to make out the shape of a driver. Were my eyes playing tricks on me? I opened my mouth to talk, but doubted myself.
I stared for a while longer. If someone was in that car, wouldn’t have they had pulled away by then, weirded out by my staring?
I couldn’t move my eyes from the car though, making myself memorize the make and model. I had to get to the bottom of this. I wasn’t going to live my life in fear. That Chapter of my life was over.
I swallowed the lump in my throat and chanted to myself. JGK. Ford. Focus.
