Chapter 108: A Gamble

The heavy silence of the royal bedchamber was broken only by the sound of Odesse’s soft, uneven breathing. She sat curled against Valex’s chest, her fingers clutching his tunic as the quiet tears she had held back all day finally spilled over. The warmth of his arms was her only sanctuary against the unnatural chill slowly seeping into her bones.

"I fell right into her trap, my king," Odesse whispered, her voice cracking under the weight of her realization. "Everything... everything was designed to bring me to this exact point."

Valex held her tighter, resting his chin gently against her hair. His chest rumbled with a deep, comforting hum. "It is not your fault, my love. You acted out of mercy for the people. You must not carry the guilt of her malice."

Odesse pulled back slightly, sitting upright on the mattress. Her eyes, though red-rimmed, sparkled with a sudden, sharp frustration. "But why would she go to such lengths? What does she truly gain from this? Even if she orchestrates this entire tragedy, she will ultimately lose everything. She will lose you, and she will have nothing left to show for it."

Valex’s expression turned somber, his gaze drifting toward the shadows in the corner of the room. "Azure has never been driven by the things that make sense to normal people. She does not look like someone who values a quiet, peaceful life."

"But she knows the rules of the curse," Odesse argued, her hands tightening in her lap. "She knows that once she realizes I have redirected the tether to myself, the spell will turn inward. The Moon Spirit protects me from dying, but the magic will consume her entirely. She is driving herself toward her own end."

"When her father was a teacher for Malrik and me," Valex said quietly, his voice dropping to a gravelly register, "I remember seeing her. She would creep through the palace corridors, peeking around corners just to watch me. It was entirely disturbing, but I was young and foolish, so I never paid it any attention. Her father was her ultimate enabler."

Odesse looked at him, her brow furrowing with concern. "What do you mean, my king?"

"Azure was an only child," Valex explained, turning his amber eyes back to her. "Her father gave her everything she ever demanded. He shielded her from consequences, validated her cruelties, and encouraged her worst behaviors. Now, she is faced with a reality where she cannot have the one thing she wants—which is me. Without that control, the world holds no meaning for her. I doubt she has ever truly understood what it means to find quiet happiness."

A cold realization settled over Odesse’s features. "So it is exactly as she wants. She wants to dictate the final scene of this story, denying us any victory over her defeat. Her ego is so massive that she would rather bring the temple down on her own head than let us stand triumphant."

"Exactly," Valex murmured, a faint, humorless smile touching his lips. "She wants to be the one who pulls the trigger, even if it means her own ruin."

Odesse tapped her temple softly, letting out a frustrated sigh. "What an absolute, suffocating narcissist. But my king... what about the physical anchor? I couldn’t get a visual of it because the page was torn from the book. I assumed she hid it in the Hispo region since they were her original target, but now..."

Valex went completely still. He slowly stood up from the bed, his tall frame cutting a striking silhouette against the dim candlelight. He began to pace back and forth across the wooden floorboards, his jaw clenched in deep thought.

"What is it, my king?" Odesse asked, leaning forward.

Valex paused, turning to face her. "My love... you said the page regarding the physical anchor was torn out. Are you absolutely certain it depicted a specific, ancient relic?"

Odesse hesitated, touching the back of her neck where her skin felt freezing cold. "I... I am not entirely sure. I simply assumed it was a standard ritual object because of the context of the book."

"No," Valex said, shaking his head slowly. "The physical anchor does not have a strict, pre-determined form. Azure tore that page out to send you on a fool’s errand. The original users of this magic lived decades ago; their anchor would have been completely different. Since the spell feeds entirely on the ego and intent of the caster, the physical anchor must be something deeply personal to her. A materialistic object that she owns, cherishes, and keeps close to her heart."

Odesse’s breath caught in her throat. "I never thought of that... She really is just playing a game with me, isn’t she?"

"She is playing with all of us," Valex agreed softly. "She manipulates everyone around us, forcing them to play the exact roles she has written for them, and she does it with absolutely no remorse."

"But if that is true..." Odesse’s eyes widened in sudden realization. "What could she have possibly left in the Hispo region that she loves that much? She hates the Hisponians. She wouldn’t leave a precious possession there."

"Exactly, my love," Valex said, stepping back toward the bed. "Not the Hispo region. This palace."

The truth hit Odesse like a physical blow. "You are right, my king. The Hisponians were never her true target. I was. The physical anchor isn’t buried in some distant, ruined land—it is right here, hidden under our very noses, inside the Moonlight Palace."

Valex sat back down on the mattress, wrapping his powerful arms around her, holding her close to his chest. "We will find it together, my love. I will be beside you for every single step of this search. But you must be incredibly careful. If Azure catches even a whisper of suspicion that you have redirected the curse to yourself, the spell will implode before we can find the anchor."

Odesse leaned her head against his shoulder, her voice barely a whisper. "I understand, my king."

They sat in the quiet warmth of the bedchamber, seeking comfort in each other’s presence. But the peace was short-lived.

Suddenly, a brilliant, crimson light cut through the heavy curtains, painting the walls of the room in a violent, bloody hue. Valex shifted instantly, his muscles tensing. Odesse’s eyes snapped open as the terrifying red glow bathed the bedsheets.

Valex scrambled to his feet, rushing toward the balcony. "The second night, Odesse... it has begun—"

A heavy, dull thud echoed behind him.

Valex spun around, his heart leaping into his throat. Odesse lay crumpled on the floorboards, her body completely limp and unconscious.

"Odesse!" he gasped, rushing back into the room. He gathered her fragile, freezing form in his arms, lifting her onto the mattress. He pulled the thick blankets over her pale shoulders, his hands trembling as he gently caressed her hair, whispering desperate prayers into the quiet room.

...

The air in the spiritual realm was thick and static. Odesse stood in the center of the familiar forest clearing, her bare feet pressing against the dew-kissed grass. Above her, the moon shined with a brilliant, blinding intensity.

The Moon Spirit descended slowly from the canopy, its ethereal form glowing softly. "Why have you returned to this place so soon, moon child?"

Odesse looked up at the spirit, her expression filled with a cold, desperate resolve. "Azure is incredibly smart. More calculative than I ever gave her credit for."

"Indeed she is," the spirit replied, its voice echoing through the trees.

"I need to know if there is a way," Odesse said, taking a step forward, "for me to establish a direct connection with her soul."

The Moon Spirit hovered in silence for a moment, the light around it pulsing. "Why do you seek to touch a soul so deeply corrupted by malice, moon child?"

"Because I need to know exactly what she feels before she perishes," Odesse said, her voice steady. "I need to understand the structure of her thoughts. Please, I need your assistance."

"If that is your will, I shall grant you the path," the spirit answered.

"Thank you," Odesse murmured. She paused, looking deeply into the spirit’s unseeing light. "But first, I must ask you something. Why did Azure not connect the curse directly to me from the very beginning? Why go through the Hisponians?"

The spirit hovered slightly higher, the wind rustling the leaves around them. "Because you are bound to me by covenant, moon child. My presence acts as an absolute spiritual barrier. Her dark magic cannot pierce your soul from the outside unless you willingly open the door and permit the connection. She had no choice but to target those unprotected by divine contract."

A slow, brilliant smile spread across Odesse’s face. The final piece of the puzzle had just fallen into place.

"What is it, moon child?" the spirit asked.

"I want to play a gamble," Odesse whispered, her eyes shining with dangerous excitement.

"A gamble?"

"Yes," Odesse said, her hands clenching into fists as she looked up at the majestic sky. "I want Azure to find out that I have redirected the spell to myself. But first... you must help me reach into her soul."
