Chapter 276: Chapter 276: Zhao Mingyan!!

Ji Qingwu was keenly aware of this fact, yet she was completely helpless.

Seeing Emperor Wu Su lower his head, his eyes downcast and his body trembling slightly, he appeared to be enduring great pain.

Ji Qingwu furrowed her brow.

’Did I really hit him too hard just now?’ Her own chest ached in sympathy.

Soon, Ji Qingwu discovered that she was completely and utterly wrong.

When Emperor Wu Su looked up again, his eyes were filled with amusement.

Not only were his eyes smiling, but he also laughed out loud.

His laughter even caused the wound on his chest to split open, seeping more blood until the bandage was completely dyed red.

But his smile held little joy or pleasure.

It was, more than anything, maniacal.

Emperor Wu Su paid no mind to the pain in his chest. Even as more blood flowed from the wound, he acted as if he couldn’t feel a thing.

He lowered his gaze, the corners of his eyes tilting up in a faint curve as the dim candlelight melted across his face.

He looked down at the woman lying beneath him.

At this moment, he was like a natural predator at the top of the food chain. Having been bitten by his prey and drawn blood, he was not deterred. Instead, for someone who hadn’t known the meaning of pain for so long, it only made him more excited.

The quiet flame finally erupted.

He no longer needed to hold back.

Emperor Wu Su clasped both of Ji Qingwu’s wrists and pinned them above her head on the pillow with one hand, while his other hand seized her waist.

Where their skin touched, his body temperature was scalding hot.

Ji Qingwu sensed something was wrong and kicked at him with her slender leg, but he swiftly blocked it with his arm, pulling her leg and pinning it beside her.

The corners of her eyes reddened as she said, "Must you humiliate me like this?"

The door was still open. Someone could walk by at any moment and see everything.

Emperor Wu Su said in a hoarse voice, "This isn’t humiliation. It’s affection."

A tear finally fell from the corner of Ji Qingwu’s reddened eye. She began to sob softly, her delicate body trembling.

"Why must you force me too?"

At that, she could no longer hold back. All the heartache and sorrow of the past days overflowed from her heart, and more and more crystalline tears streamed from her watery eyes.

Even when Wei Ting had blackmailed her into marrying him using Yuan Heng, Ji Qingwu hadn’t been this heartbroken.

"You’re not like this, you’re not..."

Seeing Ji Qingwu’s pitiful state, crying uncontrollably, the long hair by her jade-white ears was soaked by her tears.

Emperor Wu Su’s Adam’s apple bobbed. "I’m forcing you?"

"If I were like Wei Ting and had used forceful measures from the start, you would have been by my side every night. Would I have ever given you the chance to marry someone else?"

"Ah Wu, what is it that you truly want? My heart has softened for you time and time again. Is that still not enough?"

The Emperor was resolute today. Even with Ji Qingwu weeping beneath him, he remained completely unmoved.

The lampshade in the room was made of green chalcedony. Outside, the night grew deeper and the dew heavier, its chill misting the glazed surface.

Ji Qingwu’s body surrendered to him far sooner than her will.

He moved suddenly, and her eyes flew wide.

"Zhao Mingyan!"

She cursed, "You bastard!"

Her voice carried a tone of desperation.

Emperor Wu Su’s body stiffened as if he couldn’t react in time. A flicker of shock crossed his face, and his brows lifted slightly.

He pursed his lips and asked, "What did you say?"

The look in Emperor Wu Su’s eyes was unfathomable, the darkness in his pupils deeper than the night itself. Ji Qingwu met his gaze, then guiltily looked away.

He made a move to press forward, and Ji Qingwu cried out in desperation, "I said you’re a bastard!!"

"The line before that."

The ink-black of his eyes grew purer and clearer, the turbulent storm within them now gone.

It was the first time Ji Qingwu had ever called the Emperor by his given name.

She thought she couldn’t remember his name, but just now, it had rolled off her tongue with perfect ease.

It turned out the name had been rooted in her heart for a long time.

Back when she discovered she had targeted the wrong person for her strategy, she had waited specifically at the gates of the military camp to call his name, only to get a face full of dust from merciless iron hooves.

Seeing her red-rimmed eyes staring at the wall beside the bed, lost in thought, he...

He patted her on the waist. "Speak. Say it again."

Ji Qingwu’s lips parted and closed a few times, but she found she couldn’t bring herself to say his name again.

Her eyes flickered as she tried to bargain, "If I say it again, will Your Majesty let me go for today?"

Emperor Wu Su said, "Why should I agree to your terms? Calling me by my given name is an act of insubordination. Should I let you off the hook for that too?"

"If saying it pleases me, perhaps..."

"Perhaps you’ll let me go?"

Ji Qingwu looked at him hesitantly. Faced with her only chance to save herself, she spent a long time steeling herself.

So long, in fact, that Emperor Wu Su lost his patience and his solid body pressed down again. Ji Qingwu hurriedly pushed against his chest.

Before, her cheeks had been pink with indignation; now, they were crimson with shame, like vibrant summer fruit.

Her voice was thin and weak.

"Zhao... Zhao... Mingyan."

"Calling me by my full name is disrespectful." The gloom in Emperor Wu Su’s eyes dispersed, replaced by the clear, bright glow of moonlight.

"Just the two words."

Ji Qingwu felt as if her tongue were tied in a knot. She couldn’t get the words out, and she grew so anxious that she broke into a sweat.

The night was deep and quiet. The glazed lantern was shrouded in the chill air, a faint mist condensing on its surface.

Under his piercing gaze, Ji Qingwu could hold out no longer. From her crimson lips came a sound more melodious than an oriole’s song.

"Ming Yan."

The moment Ji Qingwu said it, all the blood in her body rushed to her face.

She didn’t know where the strength came from, but she shoved Emperor Wu Su away and buried her entire face in the soft bedding.

Outside, clouds might hide the crescent moon, but inside, the brocade quilt couldn’t hide her.

Zhao Mingyan’s gaze softened, like the sea slowly unfurling under the sun.

The corners of his mouth curved into a slight smile, and the light in his eyes was like stars, ready to envelop her completely.

’I can’t just hide my head and leave the rest of me exposed,’ Ji Qingwu thought. ’This is not good.’

She tried to pull the brocade quilt over to wrap herself in it, but she couldn’t budge it. Looking over, she saw that he was holding a corner of the quilt.

Ji Qingwu gritted her teeth. "Didn’t you say... you’d let me go if I said it?"

Zhao Mingyan looked down at her. "When did I ever say that?"

Ji Qingwu had once again walked right into the trap set by the man before her. He pulled her, quilt and all, beneath him.

She squeezed her eyes shut. "You giant bastard!"

She had yet to feel the anticipated pain when she heard a man’s low gasp.

’Is it over?’

Ji Qingwu peeked open her eyes, only to see Emperor Wu Su’s face turn deathly pale in an instant, his forehead beaded with sweat.

He gave a muffled cough, and dark red blood trickled from the corner of his mouth.

’Something’s wrong!’

Ji Qingwu scrambled to sit up, grabbing his hand and feeling for the pulse at his wrist.

’This pulse...’

Ji Qingwu looked at him skeptically, then carefully checked his pulse several more times.

She frowned. "Your Majesty, did you take some kind of medicine before you came here?"

Zhao Mingyan nodded, sitting quietly to regulate his breathing.

’Look at the bloody bandage on his chest, the blood on his lips... his body is already in such a state, yet he was still thinking about messing around before he came.’

Ji Qingwu’s face flushed red as she said, "You can’t just take that kind of medicine."
