Chapter 982: Shock
"Trash! Can’t do even one thing properly." Nie Haoshuo snapped, then he turned around and left.
On the way, he glanced at his servant, a man in his thirties and ordered, "Go find out everything about this Gu Chen. Also, find out what the Gu Family’s situation is and what the Liu and Song families are planning on doing."
"Yes, Master." The servant bowed in acknowledgement and immediately left to carry out his order.
"Just because you have reached the Muscle Refinement realm, you think you can interfere in the Nie family’s affairs, my affairs..." A cold glint flashed in his eyes.
...
Nie Haolong’s family of three had been living in the outer area of the Nie estate. Though it was situated just a short distance away from the estate’s gate, it was hidden behind several rows of trees because not far from their home was the servants’ quarters.
When they reached his house, they saw a young woman with facial features somewhat similar to Nie Haolong sitting in the small courtyard in front, focused on picking out small debris and weed-seeds from the rice.
"Elder Sister, I’m home." Nie Haolong called out as he pushed open the broken gate.
Max looked at the girl. He knew her. She was Nie Haolong’s elder sister, Nie Xiaolu. Every time he came over, she would serve him the best tea they had in the house, speak politely and if it was time to eat, she would also prepare a meal for him too.
’She has gotten even weaker.’ He sighed, noticing she was now thin exactly like him, and was wearing the same worn out clothes but the number of patches and needlework has increased in several places. Her complexion was paler than he last saw her and her eyes were more sunken, which showed just how malnutritioned she was and wasn’t getting good sleep either.
Nie Xiaolu looked up and immediately her gaze focused on Nie Haolong’s torn lip which still had a few traces of blood despite him trying his best to clean them.
Her brows furrowed in concern as she stood up, walked over and gently touched his face "Someone bullied you again?"
Ba-Dum!
While Nie Haolong chuckled casually and tried to show her it was no big deal, Max’s heart skipped a beat because he felt a bone chilling coldness from her and it was the result of her suppressed negative emotions and... too much accumulated Pure Yin Energy.
"Enough about me, Elder Sister. Look, who is here?" Nie Haolong said, glancing at Max.
Following his gaze, Nie Xiaolu finally looked at him. For a split second, she seemed confused then a hint of recognition flashed in her eyes, "You are... Gu Chen?"
Max nodded and smiled, "It’s me."
Nie Xiaolu looked him up and down, then said, "It’s good that you have recovered. We were worried when we heard you had fallen ill."
Max wanted to comment on her condition and say that she should take care of herself better but he held back because it would only hurt her. After all, it wasn’t that she didn’t want to take care of herself, Haolong and her mother better but their financial condition didn’t allow them.
Maybe she caught the look in his eyes, she gave him a small, understanding smile that seemed to say it was okay and she didn’t mind it.
Max couldn’t help but feel impressed by how sharp she was.
’If she gets the opportunity to cultivate, she would definitely become a woman to be reckoned with.’ He thought because she wasn’t just sharp and intelligent but very resilient too.
"Elder Sister..." Nie Haolong said, "Chen has just recovered and despite his increased cultivation level, he is still very weak as you can see, so I..."
"Mm. Go ahead and give it to him." Before he finished, Nie Xiaolu nodded in agreement.
"Thank you, Elder Sister. You are the best." Nie Haolong smiled happily like a child while Max looked at them in confusion.
What were they talking about?
Suddenly he remembered what Haolong had said earlier ’I have something perfect for you’. Now adding in their conversation, he came to a conclusion—Haolong most likely had got his hands on something that could help him recover.
Thus, he immediately shook his head, "Haolong, no need. I just need to eat properly for a few days and I will recover."
Before Haolong could say anything, Nie Xiaolu smiled, "You don’t need to think too much about it because giving it to you is best for you and us too because we are reluctant to use it and we can’t take it out either as it will cause us a lot of trouble if we do."
She said while glancing at the part of cloth wrapped thing spilling out from Haolong’s robes.
Max glanced at it, then nodded in understanding.
Just as Haolong and Nie Xiaolu thought he would accept it, Max shook his head, "I still won’t accept it like this."
Haolong’s expression fell while Nie Xiaolu pursed her lips.
"Chen, don’t be so stubborn. It’s going to rot away here if you don’t take it." Nie Haolong urged, "So just take it. Haven’t I taken so many things from you?"
Max smiled, "This and that is different."
Just as Nie Haolong was about to retort, Max thoughtfully said, "How about this, you sell it to me."
Nie Haolong’s expression darkened, he clearly didn’t like the idea but Max wasn’t looking at him but at Nie Xiaolu, who gave Max a deep look then nodded, "Alright, we’ll sell it to you then."
Inside, she couldn’t help but feel moved. This friend of her brother’s... he was still as good as before.
"Sister!" Nie Haolong glared at her but she acted as if she couldn’t see him.
"Alright, let me see what it is first. Then we’ll discuss the price." Max chuckled and Nie Xiaolu began leading him inside the house, leaving Nie Haolong standing there, looking aggrieved and frustrated. He had brought him here to give him that and ease some weight of his favours off his heart.
But now...
"Argh." He had the urge to pull out his hair.
...
A short while later... Inside the house...
"This is...!" Max’s eyes widened in shock when he saw the thing that the siblings claimed could help him recover.
He had thought of many possibilities of what it could be after hearing bits and pieces of information from the duo but he had never thought it was going to be... this.
