Chapter 918: Patience is the key
4th Zone - Special Base
Elder Carter sent away the two Captains. He had warned them not to leak the news. They knew what would happen then.
His gaze then fell on Captain Rick.
"Rick, I want you to succeed as soon as possible. The kid has attracted the attention of Elder Sandra. If he does well, she might offer him protection."
"I want you to kill this young man within a week," he added.
Rick was a middle-aged man. He had private dealings with those families in the 4th zone, so he wanted to maximize the benefits.
"Alright," Rick agreed.
The following day,
Jeremy Night once again entered the wilderness after selecting a mission. But when he reached the mission destination, he encountered a Beast Taming Team.
This time, he was cautious. He used his eye power early to find them. Then he moved away from the place. He watched their activities from afar.
Even their own lifeline beasts wouldn’t be able to sense him. The distance was enough for him to watch over them.
He then saw that the Beast Taming Team continued to linger around the location. They were not going anywhere.
As time passed, his suspicion grew. He was sure that they were after his life. The mastermind had sent a team to kill him.
Jeremy Night’s heart grew solemn. He didn’t expect the killer to send a team. He had thought they would conduct an investigation into the second-year student’s death.
But that didn’t make waves at all. Instead, he encountered another killer team. If he wanted, he could do something about it, but he didn’t want to fight them.
It was unwise. The Beast Taming Team was already full of Tier-6 Beast Tamers. He had not fought against a Tier-6 team before.
It was not going to be easy. On top of that, even if one of them escaped, his true ability would be exposed. He didn’t want that to happen.
Since he was not sure of killing all of them, he thought it was best to stay away from the place. He thought they would leave soon.
But the Beast Taming Team headed by Rick stayed there.
"Damn it," Rick uttered.
There were six members in the team, including him.
"Captain, what is it?"
"You have brought us here. Are we going to fight against an enemy Faction team?" a member asked.
Rick frowned. He wanted to tell his team members once he came across the young man. But the target was nowhere to be seen.
He thought that the young man hadn’t reached the place yet. He must have encountered other problems. That was why he wasn’t sharing the information with others.
Elder Carter had given the mission. He was afraid that some might not want to offend Elder John.
"Captain, what’s going on?" a female team member asked.
"Yes, it’s a killing commission. Elder Carter gave the task to me. But by doing so, it will offend Elder John," Rick replied.
Gasp!
Surprise filled the room.
Rick saw everyone’s reaction. It was enough to know that there were supporters of Elder John in the team. He was a supporter of Elder John as well.
Elder John had saved the base by fighting against the corrupted beasts. Especially, he killed the bird-type beasts which posed a massive threat to them at that time.
Silence filled the place.
"Elder John is neutral. When did he get involved in a faction fight?" a knowledgeable member asked.
Hearing that, the others looked toward Rick.
Rick raised his eyebrows. He thought it might not sit well with the members. If possible, he would do it alone.
"If you guys don’t like it, then leave it. I will handle it alone," he said to the others.
It immediately made the others displeased. They were one team, yet Rick was talking like that. Rick had made a choice out of greed. He couldn’t go back.
Once he was done with the task, he could get more rewards. Then his path toward Tier-7 would be smooth sailing.
The others looked at each other. They had high regard for Elder John. They didn’t want to help their Captain in this matter.
One thing was that they had high regard for Elder John. The second thing was fear. If their deeds were exposed, then they would die for sure.
Rick said, "Alright, you guys should leave now. It is going to be twilight soon."
Hearing that, the members sighed. But they had made a decision. They could understand that their Captain had accepted some benefits. He couldn’t go back.
But they were different. They left the place. Only Rick was waiting for the target to come. He was sure that the target had accepted the mission. The destination was here.
On the other hand, Jeremy Night saw that the Beast Tamers were going back, except for one person.
Jeremy was taken aback. He didn’t know what had happened, but it was a good sign for him. He hoped that the last one would leave as well.
He continued to wait there. As night fell, the person was still staying there. In the nighttime, the activities of the beasts would increase.
Jeremy Night shook his head. He could already spot beasts roaming nearby. It wouldn’t be long before a beast found him.
He didn’t expect the person to stay. Clearly, the killer was determined. Jeremy Night wanted to do the mission, but the circumstances were against him.
More than the killer, he was afraid of the higher-tier beasts in the wilderness. Unlike other wildernesses, there was a wide range of corrupted beasts in this place.
Their population was not a small number. He then left the place as well.
A few hours later,
He returned to the base. He didn’t go to the administration building; he returned to his room.
The next morning, he got a call from Elder John. He answered the call and heard from the Elder that the mission time was over, yet he hadn’t submitted the mission.
Jeremy Night had already thought of a lie.
"Elder, I was ambushed by corrupted beasts midway. I returned last night to recover," Jeremy replied.
Hearing that, Elder John was stunned. He forgot that Jeremy Night had the ability to fight across Tiers, but his body strength was only Tier-3. So if he suffered an injury, he needed rest.
"How are you doing right now?" he asked.
"Elder, I’m almost recovered. I just need rest," he replied.
