Chapter 366: Chapter 366: My Sweetheart, I’m Coming to Save You
Victor Langley was left speechless, his face turning beet red with anger.
Jared Langley quickly tried to smooth things over.
"Dad, say no more. It’s good that Uncle and Aunt are here. Aunt has a busy schedule at the company, so it’s nice she could find time to come."
Victor, already full of anger, saw that Jared wasn’t defending him and asked with a stern face, "Have you forgotten whose son you are, just for a woman?"
This was a heavy accusation, and Rosalind Linton hurriedly tugged on Victor’s sleeve, "Victor, mind your blood pressure."
Jared gritted his back teeth, refraining from arguing back.
At this time, Iris Paxton handed a "beverage" to Juliana Jacobs.
"This brand of cocktail is delicious; I had it in The Zenthian Sea, and I thought we didn’t have it here. It’s not too alcoholic and is good for beauty and health. You should try it."
Juliana easily saw through her test.
She casually glanced at the "beverage" packaging and nonchalantly said, "Miss Paxton, thank you for your thought. However, I am not your spoiled Elias, who will take whatever is given. Just take care of yourself."
Pfft!
Adrian Langley couldn’t hold back and burst out laughing.
Even Jared, who had just been scolded, had a trace of a smile on his lips.
But only the person insinuated against opened a bottle of orange juice and silently pushed it in front of Juliana.
"Drink this, it’s sweet," Elias Langley said.
Iris exchanged a glance with Victor.
Iris took a breath, her face resuming a soft, slightly timid and expectant expression, and said to Juliana, "The weather is great today. I wonder if I have the honor to invite President Jacobs for a horse ride, and maybe... talk about us?"
She thought that by discussing the current issues among the three of them as an excuse, Juliana would agree to go horseback riding with her.
After all, who would be happy with three people constantly entangled?
However, Juliana remained seated, not even bothering to give her a glance.
"The issue lies with your inappropriate thoughts toward my husband. Between us, it’s a territorial dispute, nothing to discuss."
The uncompromising tone froze the smile on Iris’s face again, leaving her subsequent lines blocked.
But by this time, the staff, following Victor’s previous instructions, had led two prepared horses to the nearby horse-tethering area.
One was chestnut, the other black.
Iris quickly followed the pre-arranged plan, took the initiative, and walked over to pat the chestnut horse.
"This is the gentlest horse in the stable, specially kept for you."
This was her gesture, and if Juliana still didn’t appreciate it, then she was being unreasonable.
Juliana finally smiled and walked over.
But she did not go to lead the horse.
"How can I tell if this horse is really gentle?" She asked the staff.
The clueless staff immediately began to explain the methods of selecting gentle horses.
She listened and learned intently.
As time passed, Iris started getting anxious.
She and Victor had planned that she would invite Juliana on a horseback ride alone.
Prior to this, Victor would have arranged for someone to drug the black horse.
When they reached a place far from the crowd, the black horse Iris was riding would suddenly go berserk.
At that point, she would get hurt but blame it on Juliana, telling Elias that Juliana did it on purpose.
Then Elias would naturally think Juliana was a vicious woman and keep his distance from her.
But Juliana seemed aware of their plan and was in no hurry to mount the horse.
She shot a plea for help at Victor with her eyes.
Victor hurriedly approached and rudely said to Juliana, "Even this staff member said the chestnut horse is gentle. Why don’t you believe? Procrastinating here, could it be you can’t ride?"
Juliana was about to respond when the black horse suddenly neighed, rearing up without warning, eyes bloodshot, nostrils flaring, it violently broke free of the handler’s reins, charging straight toward the pile of temporary repair materials at the edge of the tethering area.
The aluminum support structures were toppled, bringing down the half-draped tarpaulin, bundles of wooden slats, and paint buckets piled on top, collapsing all at once.
The three bystanders, Iris, Victor, and Juliana, were all within the range of the falling materials.
"Watch out!"
"Get back!"
The two cries rang out almost simultaneously.
Three men in the rest area shot out of their seats, darting over like arrows.
Elias was the silent one among the three, but he was the quickest.
Jared and Adrian launched almost at the same time, but both were a half-step behind.
Juliana was already retreating to the edge of the falling materials. As Elias dashed over, he was about to wrap her waist.
But Juliana, instinctively protective of the child she carried, pushed his hand away.
Elias sensed her resistance and tension, quickening the change of his motion: instead of the waist hold, he gripped her upper arm, using the other hand to protect her shoulder and back, pulling her into his embrace.
A long-lost embrace, his crisp scent instantly enveloping her. Inside her, the early pregnancy discomfort subsided significantly.
The sloping materials piled into a mountain before them.
Missing their mark by a beat, Jared and Adrian stopped on either side of them.
Elias instantly realized they were also there to save Juliana.
His sharp gaze first swept over to Jared.
Usually talk of Aunt this, Aunt that, but it turns out you had your schemes.
Jared, sharp-witted and experienced, remained unperturbed, even patting nonexistent wrinkles on his suit, casually remarking, "Uncle Adrian, you’re quick. But helping elders is my duty. No need to thank me."
Elias was stumped by his words, then turned his gaze to Adrian.
Adrian, ever inconspicuous, but faster than Jared at the first sign of danger to Juliana, if only a half-step behind in the rush.
Adrian, lacking Jared’s bravado, immediately avoided Elias’s gaze, wide-eyed and shouting all around, "Dad, where are you buried? Deep?"
From beneath the pile of materials came Victor’s weak voice, "I’m... I’m here."
Before Adrian and Jared could move, Rosalind rushed over, past the three men, frantically heading towards the sound of Victor’s voice.
"Victor, where are you, my darling, I’m coming to save you."
She was in such a rush that a loose rope "caught" her leg.
With an "ouch," she went sprawling forward, landing heavily on the aluminum and wooden beams burying Victor.
"Ah!"
Victor’s wail of pain erupted from beneath the debris.
Rosalind grew more frantic, "clumsily" trying to get up, but it seemed her panic made things worse, inadvertently pressing on several critical spots, eliciting even more pained cries from Victor.
"Stop, no more, please go, I beg you!"
Once certain he was injured, Adelind finally stumbled aside, panic in her voice, "It’s a relief you’re alive, I was terrified."
Finally, Victor, suffering a broken leg, was taken away by ambulance.
And Iris, freeing herself and with the staff’s help, emerged from the heap.
She was only covered by a tarp, unharmed, but seeing Juliana surrounded by three men cut her deeply with envy.
What did this woman do to deserve such protection?
Especially Elias, he seemed free from any influence.
If that’s truly the case, the assignment from Uncle...
She dared not imagine the consequences of failing her task.
Resolving herself, she let herself slump down.
