Chapter 336: Chapter 336: Unable to Bear This So-Called ‘Favor’
What Sean Paxton wants is to transform this technology, which can influence the strategic balance, into an unrestricted tool for wealth and influence. As for its final destination and consequences, it’s not his primary concern.
Juliana Jacobs leaned back in her chair, the smile not reaching her eyes.
"Mr. Paxton flatters me like this, I’m a bit flattered. But I’m curious, why have you suddenly changed your attitude?"
Upon hearing this, Sean Paxton chuckled softly, displaying a bit of sincerity this time.
"I genuinely came to see President Jacobs today. Previously, I had concerns about the potential relationship between you and Sebastian Sinclair, which made my actions a bit more cautious. But lately, it seems I was overthinking."
Juliana Jacobs understood.
The "substitute" Elias Langley had carefully arranged before indeed had the desired effect.
Sean Paxton dispelled any concerns about her identity, turning to consider her as someone who could be absorbed, a master of cutting-edge technology for his own use.
Juliana lowered her eyelids, after "seriously" weighing for a moment, a very faint, appropriately measured smile appeared on her lips,
"I understand Mr. Paxton’s intention, but ’Genesis’ carries a lot on its shoulders. Your proposal today involves too broad a scope, I need some time to consider it carefully."
Sean Paxton wasn’t surprised by her ambiguity. It seemed expected; he stood up calmly.
"Certainly, such an important matter should be considered carefully. But seeing as President Jacobs and my wife get along well, out of friendship, I’ll say one more thing. In this world, the most volatile thing is human nature; sometimes the least reliable are those relationships that appear most solid. Elias, though young and talented, the heights are windy, and one misstep could lead to an irrecoverable downfall. Only a strong foundation with extensive roots can provide long-term support, wouldn’t you agree?"
He was hinting to Juliana that Elias Langley could be taken down at any moment.
The air in the office seemed to stagnate for a few seconds.
Facing his gaze, the faint smile on Juliana’s face slowly disappeared, her eyes turned calm and deep.
She didn’t get angry; her voice was calm yet sharply defined.
"Thank you for the reminder, Mr. Paxton. I always have a bottom line in doing things; technology can be discussed, and interests can be negotiated, but if anyone tries to hurt my family, no matter how the chessboard changes, I assure you, I’ll spare no cost to take them down."
The sharp light in Sean Paxton’s eyes was covered by his smile, nodding repeatedly.
"It seems you and Elias are truly in love. Then I won’t disturb you further, and await President Jacobs’ good news."
As Sean Paxton left, Raine Kane came in right after, closing the door.
"Juliana, what’s his purpose?"
Juliana stared at the closed door, finally relaxing after a long while.
"It seems the Paxton Family already believes Clara Fairchild is the person they’re looking for, but it probably won’t remain hidden for long. During this gap, I need to quickly clarify Nathan Carter’s connection, or it won’t be good for Elias or me to face enemies from both sides."
She paused for two seconds, then instructed, "Prepare, I need to go to Kenton."
Raine Kane quickly guessed her intention.
"You still feel Nathan Carter has an inevitable connection with Stella Windsor, and you want to see Evan Grant?"
Juliana nodded and stood up.
"He knows Stella better than I do. Book me a noon flight, and I should be back tonight. Help cover me on Elias’ side."
Raine Kane hesitated, "Juliana, Mr. Langley is hard to fool, but he’s actually a reasonable person. Last time, when you met with Mr. Hughes, he didn’t ask about it afterward. If you directly tell him you’re going to Kenton to meet Evan Grant for business, he might not object."
Juliana swiftly put on her coat, adjusted her cuffs, a smile appearing on her lips.
"You’re not married yet; some things you can’t fully understand. A man’s treatment of ordinary male friends and his wife’s ex-husband is entirely different. No matter how rational and generous he is, that thorn still exists to some extent. I don’t want any more complications at this time."
Raine Kane instantly understood, recognizing it’s not about trust but the subtle bias deep within human nature.
She quickly took out her phone to book a flight.
"If you leave now, you can catch the 12:40 pm flight, arriving in Kenton at 2 pm. I’ll book a return flight for 7 pm, so you’ll be back before 9 pm. Do you need me to notify Evan Grant for a pickup?"
"You handle it; also, Mr. Shaw already agreed to the treatment plan Auden Hughes devised for Summer Shaw. He will go to Vivacore Bio to sign this afternoon. You need to keep an eye on the company here, so there’s no need to send me to the airport."
Finished, Juliana headed out.
In the parking lot, as Juliana headed to her car, a white Alfa slowly stopped behind her.
As she was about to turn her head to look, the person inside already opened the door and hurriedly got out, walking towards her.
"Juliana... Miss Jacobs, please wait."
Mrs. Sinclair hurriedly approached her, with a look blending urgency, apology, and a somewhat uncertain expression.
"What business does Mrs. Sinclair have?" Juliana’s tone was calm, but her gaze carried a hint of coldness, "If you’re here to persuade me to divorce Elias Langley, don’t waste our time. You’re idle, but I’m busy."
Saying this, she opened the car door.
"No, no," Mrs. Sinclair quickly handed her a bag, "I didn’t properly consider last time, and Sebastian already reproached me. I’ve been uneasy. Today I have time, so I personally made some rice wine balls. I’m not sure if you like them?"
Juliana didn’t take it, only cast a light gaze at the bag in her hand.
The blue cloth cover, dotted with powder white flowers scattered all over. The bag’s rounded seams clicked lightly. Inside, the silver insulation layer fits just right for a small thermos and snack box.
It’s the lunch bag she carried to school every day as a child.
Mrs. Sinclair bought it, though Juliana never liked the pattern, yet never mentioned it.
Now, Mrs. Sinclair managed to find an identical one from somewhere, using it to pack her favorite rice wine balls, revealing her intentions clearly.
Juliana didn’t bother even with a polite smile, nor did she flinch looking directly at Mrs. Sinclair’s eyes with hidden unease.
"Mrs. Sinclair, I’ve never liked those sweet and sour fermented rice things. Save ’your heart’ for your ’daughters’. Although one is already in hell, trapped in her own web, isn’t there another? You can lavish her with affection. As for me, an insignificant outsider, I’m really not worthy of your concern, nor can I afford this ’fervent care’."
With that, she entered the driver’s seat, started the engine, and drove away.
Mrs. Sinclair stumbled, almost dropping the rice wine balls, watching as the car roared away, a cold, blunt pain exploding deep in her chest...
At the traffic light, Juliana wiped the tears blurring her eyes.
If all the harm could be written off, then what sense does her gritted persistence make?
Suppressing the surging emotions, the airport also arrived.
As soon as Juliana parked the car, Raine Kane’s call came in.
"Evan Grant’s phone isn’t reachable, but I contacted his assistant. Ethan Carter says he’s on a flight to Kingsford, landing in an hour. Don’t leave, just wait at the airport for him. Ethan Carter has sent him a message, he’ll find you once he disembarks."
"Alright," Juliana glanced at the time, "I’ll wait for him at the arrivals hall."
"To be safe, I’ll come over too."
Juliana agreed, hung up, and walked towards the arrivals hall.
Half an hour passed, Raine Kane hadn’t arrived yet, and Juliana got up to head to the restroom.
The warm water flowed over her fingers, reflecting her slightly tired face in the mirror.
Just then, the immaculate mirror silently reflected several unfamiliar figures...
