Chapter 256: Broke up

At four thirty, Kye arrived at the designated location dressed in a neat set of formal clothes. Nothing overly stiff, just a plain shirt paired with well-fitted trousers.

"I’ve been wearing clothes like this a lot lately," he muttered to himself.

Ever since joining the PSC, he had started paying more attention to his appearance, even spending money on grooming products he would have ignored in the past.

He was fairly certain that every level up made his skin smoother and his body healthier, but some things were still worth investing in.

There was also the matter of reconciling with his girlfriend.

She loved him regardless of how he looked, he knew that. Even so, he believed it was his responsibility as her boyfriend to always look presentable whenever they met.

"There are still fifteen minutes left." He said while rotating his shoulder a little.

The spar with Hashu didn’t last long today but those few minutes took a lot from him.

If not for the meeting he would spent more time there.

While standing, he gazed at the rush of people around him.

Diana’s Kitchen was located in the eastern part of the city, quite a distance from his apartment. To avoid getting caught in the evening rush, he had taken a taxi instead.

Since he had been instructed to call the number about fifteen minutes before five, he simply walked over to the restaurant and waited outside, quietly watching people come and go.

Just then, his phone buzzed.

It was a message from Adam.

{Sniff... bro, she left me.}

Kyle’s eyes widened. Without a second thought, he immediately called him.

The call connected, and on the second ring, Adam answered.

"He..."

"Brooooo!"

A heartbroken wail burst through the speaker, so emotional that Adam could barely form coherent words.

"Tell me what happened. We met just two days ago, and you told me everything was fine between you two."

"It never was... sniff... I was the only one trying to make this relationship work. I finally realized it. Maya always kept her distance from me, like I was invading her personal space. I mean... as her boyfriend, wasn’t I allowed to hold her hand?"

"Yeah, you were," Kyle replied with a weary sigh.

So Ethara’s apostle really was just like her.

No wonder Adam hadn’t noticed anything strange when Ethara had used Maya’s body as a vessel. Their behavior had barely been any different.

"But, bro..." Adam’s voice cracked again. "She said she isn’t interested in dating anymore. She wants to focus on her career... and she asked me to forget about her."

Another sniffle echoed through the phone.

Kyle couldn’t help but feel sorry for him. He had seen firsthand how serious Adam had been about Maya.

Still, after hearing what Ethara had revealed about Maya’s true feelings, Kyle had a feeling it was always going to end this way.

Leaning against a nearby lamp post, he asked, "Where are you? Do you want to come over later and talk for a while?"

"You really would?" Adam’s voice brightened despite the tears. "I love you, bro. Seriously, you’re the best."

Kyle let out a small chuckle.

"I’m outside right now, so you’ll have to wait a bit. I’ll probably be back around seven."

"Where are you? I can come pick you up."

Kyle hummed thoughtfully.

The restaurant was quite a distance from his apartment, and spending another two hundred lumir on a taxi ride home sounded downright painful.

"I’ll text you when it’s time to leave the mansion. Don’t come until I tell you, got it?"

"Okay..." Adam sniffled. "But please hurry. At this rate, I might flood the whole house with my tears."

Shaking his head with an amused smile, Kyle ended the call.

So dramatic.

Then again, he couldn’t exactly make fun of him.

When he had broken up with Amanda, he had been just as devastated.

A quick glance at the time showed it was already four forty-five.

Without another thought, Kyle dialed the number he had been given.

The call rang once before it was abruptly disconnected.

"Hm?"

He frowned, wondering if he should try calling again.

"Nice to meet you, Mister Kyle."

The calm voice behind him made him stiffen.

Kyle turned around to find a bespectacled woman standing a few steps away.

Her short violet hair rested just above her shoulders, framing a delicate face. Sharp purple eyes met his, but they seemed strangely hollow, almost completely devoid of emotion.

A small teardrop-shaped beauty mark beneath the corner of her left eye immediately caught his attention.

She stood nearly half a foot shorter than him, her petite figure wrapped in a perfectly tailored black suit. Combined with her unreadable expression, she looked remarkably similar to the female spies from movies.

Quiet and composed but undeniably beautiful.

"If you may."

She extended a hand toward the restaurant, politely inviting him inside.

Kyle gave a silent nod and followed after her.

The moment they stepped inside, a wave of cool air washed over Kyle, drawing a quiet sigh from his lips. The temperature alone made the place feel incredibly comfortable.

Only a handful of guests occupied the restaurant, each immersed in hushed conversations while enjoying their meals.

He had never visited Diana’s Kitchen before. Just looking at the building from outside had been enough to convince him it was expensive.

Now that he was inside, he was even more certain.

The décor radiated understated luxury, polished without being flashy. It was the kind of establishment where even the complimentary water probably came in several varieties.

The woman guided him across the first floor before leading him up a short flight of stairs. Beyond it stretched another dining area lined with a series of sliding doors.

Private dining rooms.

Without a word, she walked farther down the corridor before stopping at one of them and sliding the door open.

"Please."

Kyle didn’t enter immediately.

Instead, he activated God’s Eye, his gaze sweeping through the room.

If Ava had taught him anything, it was never to let his guard down.

No hidden cameras or traps.

"You can rest assured."

The deep voice came from the man already seated across the table.

"There is nothing here that would compromise your privacy, Mister Astortia."

Kyle shifted his attention to him.

Being tall and broad-shouldered himself, Kyle usually stood out in a crowd.

But this man...

He was built like a bear.

Bushy facial hair framed his rugged face, while feline-like eyes calmly studied him from across the room. His massive physique made him look less like a man and more like a beast wearing human skin.

For the first time in his life, Kyle felt physically smaller standing before someone.

The giant rose to his feet and extended a hand.

"My name is Russel Balistar, and I am goi..."

His words abruptly stopped.

For a split second, the grip around Kyle’s hand tightened.

Not enough to hurt, but enough to make Kyle furrow his brows.

Just as suddenly, Russel let go and turned toward the violet-haired woman.

"Jean... we have a guest."

Jean frowned in confusion, but before she could ask what he meant, the sliding door opened once more.

The newcomer made Russel rub his forehead in resignation.

Kyle, on the other hand, broke into a surprised smile.

"Miss me?"

The silver-haired woman stood in the doorway with a bright, toothy grin.

A wild Veronica had appeared.
