Chapter 255: Mischievous God

"What happened?" Amanda asked as Kyle returned to the car and slipped into the seat beside her.

"Nothing," Kyle replied. "We just had a quick chat. I thanked him for the information."

Amanda grinned knowingly.

"I bet you weren’t just thanking him."

Kyle let out a quiet chuckle.

"Well... forgive this jealous side of me, but I didn’t like him from the moment I saw him."

Amanda nodded in agreement.

"I felt the same way. He was always so clingy. Even back then, he kept asking me to play with him. If I refused, he’d wait outside my house for over an hour until Grandma finally told me to go join him."

Kyle gave a small shrug.

"I guess those moments meant a lot more to him than they did to you."

Amanda shrugged as well.

"Forget about him."

She started the engine, and moments later, the car rolled onto the road.

As they merged onto the main street, Amanda glanced at Kyle.

"When’s your counseling session tomorrow?"

"I’m not sure. It’ll probably be in the evening."

He hadn’t been given an exact time yet. They had only told him that the person assigned to his case would contact him the following morning.

"If they allow it," Amanda said, "let me come with you too."

Kyle raised an eyebrow, a teasing smile tugging at his lips.

"What? Worried I might need a guardian?"

Amanda let out a small huff.

"No. I just don’t want them making unnecessary demands or treating you differently."

Kyle chuckled.

"Babe, I’m definitely going to be treated differently. If anything, I’ll probably look more like an instructor than a student."

He had seen movies with a similar premise before, where a retired soldier returned to school and somehow ended up falling for one of the teachers.

Hopefully, his academy life would stop at the "looking like an instructor" part.

"Kyle," Amanda said softly, "I know it might sound hard to believe, but academy life can actually be enjoyable. You’ll meet new people, learn more about this world..."

She smiled gently.

"So please, try to enjoy it."

Kyle nodded.

"I’ll do my best."

Hopefully, there would be at least a few people willing to welcome him.

....

[Next Day]

[8:08 AM]

The sharp buzz of his phone broke the silence.

Kyle picked it up from the table.

He had just returned from a two-hour morning sprint. As usual, he had headed straight for the shower afterward. He sweated far too much to do anything else first.

Now, with a towel draped over his damp hair, he opened the email that had just arrived.

[Cadet Astortia Kyle,

This message is to notify you that your counseling session will be held today at Diana’s Kitchen at 4:30 PM.

You are requested to arrive fifteen minutes early and not bring any companion with you.

Once you reach the location, kindly call the number provided below. You will then be escorted to your destination.

Sincere Regards.]

Kyle was surprised to discover that it was a one-time-read email.

Without wasting a second, he quickly memorized the phone number before closing the message.

The instant he did, the email disappeared from his inbox.

"Huh..."

He pulled a notepad toward himself and wrote down the location, time, and phone number in case he forgot them later.

Since the email had explicitly instructed him not to bring anyone along, Amanda wouldn’t be able to accompany him.

Then again, both of them had already expected that.

He checked the time before deciding to make himself something to eat.

As he started cooking, he called Blake to inform him about the counseling session.

The call went unanswered.

Setting his phone aside, Kyle placed a wok over the flame, swirled a little oil around it, and tossed in the chopped vegetables.

[Host, you seem nervous.]

"Do I?" Kyle smiled as he stirred the vegetables with a spatula. "Well, this is the beginning of a new Chapter in my life."

He continued cooking before adding,

"Hopefully, the academy will give me plenty of opportunities to stream."

That reminded him of something.

"I didn’t see Ethara yesterday. Can you tell me if she’s doing okay?"

[Sharing information about viewers is prohibited, Host.]

Then, another notification appeared.

[The God of Mischief looks at you with a grin.]

[You have caused her quite a bit of trouble, human.]

Kyle’s hand froze.

Alongside that last message, a voice echoed in his mind.

It sounded neither masculine nor feminine.

It was calm and soothing.

Yet something about it sent a chill racing down his spine.

[Host, please ignore those messages.]

The system’s way of texting carried an unusual hint of panic.

But it was already too late.

"What trouble?" Kyle asked, his expression hardening.

"What happened to Ethara?"

[She is being cornered now for helping someone she was never supposed to help. And now, both of you will face the consequences.]

[The God of Mischief watches with excitement.]

"..."

Kyle fell silent.

The first thing that struck him was how that being seemed to relish someone else’s misfortune.

The second was far worse.

Ethara had gotten herself into trouble because she had blessed him.

He already knew that contact between mortals and immortals disrupted the world’s natural order.

The more they interacted, or the more he relied on their blessings, the greater the disturbance they created in the fabric of reality.

Even so, Kyle had believed Ethara would have considered every possible consequence before making such a decision.

Out of all his viewers, she and One-Eyed had always been the calmest and most rational.

Which was exactly why this caught him off guard.

[Host, please do not concern yourself with this matter. Your priority should be mastering the blessing so you do not make a decision you will regret later.]

The system was trying to divert his attention, clearly not wanting him to focus on this mischievous God who always has a way to bypass the system’s security and send Kyle messages.

Kyle let out a quiet hum.

"You’re right."

He felt being too concerned would only entertain the God so he decided to focus on something else.

He still struggled to control his own body whenever he used the blessing. His speed and strength increased so drastically that even the simplest movement demanded careful restraint. Much like what happened during his previous hunt.

He needed more training.

More time beneath the moonlight.

After that, no more messages came from the God of Mischief.

Kyle decided not to dwell on it any longer.

Once breakfast was ready, complete with vegetables, meat, and a serving of carbohydrates, he carried the plate to the dining table and began eating.

Between bites, he gave the system another command.

"Once I’m done, send me to the Temple."

[Command accepted, Host.]

Kyle nodded.

Today, he intended to learn more about the legendary warrior Hashu and his journey to the Temple’s core.

And while streaming that, he hoped to get in contact with Ethara.

’I pray you are safe, Artemis.’
