Chapter 163: Chapter 163: A Toxic Loop
The two hundred players charging across the clearing didn’t even notice the environmental shift until it was entirely too late.
Kaelus led the Vanguard of the Legion of Blades. He was only thirty feet away from Dante when the massive overarching branches of the peach trees violently trembled.
The soft drifting pink petals didn’t just fall. They exploded downward.
A blizzard of thick, highly concentrated, and glowing pink pollen violently washed over the entire clearing.
It was a massive unavoidable area-of-effect environmental hazard. It completely ignored standard armor mitigation and physical shields.
Dante and his squad stood perfectly still in the absolute center of the clearing and were entirely unaffected.
The toxic pollen hit the invisible edge of the [Ultimate Guardian Halo] of Aura and instantly vaporized into harmless purple smoke. It was completely neutralized by the localized status immunity of the Mystic Sovereign.
The rival guilds were not so lucky.
The infantry of Vanguard’s Legacy and the vanguard of the Legion of Blades ran headfirst into the pollen cloud.
The system interface above the massive crowd of players flashed violently.
[Environmental Hazard Triggered: Hallucinogenic Spores]
[Debuff Applied: Cognitive Disruption.]
[Warning: Reality parameters overwritten. Friendly-fire protocols deactivated.]
Kaelus stumbled and his heavy silver boots skidded across the grass.
He raised his hand to his head and aggressively blinked his eyes as the pink pollen coated his armor.
"Maintain formation!" Kaelus roared. He tried to push through the sudden overwhelming dizziness. "Healer, cleanse this debuff!"
His healers couldn’t cleanse it. They were already compromised.
Dante watched the chaos unfold from the safety of the starlight dome.
The effect of the [Cognitive Disruption] was absolute and instantaneous.
It wasn’t a standard poison or a slow-ticking damage-over-time curse.
It was a complete psychological hijack of the perception filters of the game engine.
The two hundred players stopped charging Dante. They stopped looking at the glowing Celestial egg on the jade pedestal.
They looked at each other.
And they didn’t see rival guild members.
"Monsters!" a Vanguard’s Legacy tank screamed and pointed his massive broadsword directly at a confused Legionnaire standing three feet away. "They are flanking us! It is a massive horde!"
"Defend the Warlord!" a Legion mage shrieked and instantly cast a massive fireball directly into the center of the Vanguard formation.
The fireball detonated with a deafening roar.
Because the system had deactivated the standard friendly-fire protocols, the magical explosion dealt full unmitigated damage. Three Vanguard players were instantly vaporized into blue pixels.
The clearing erupted into a localized apocalypse.
The two heavily geared and highly coordinated armies completely turned on each other.
The hallucinogenic spores had entirely rewritten their visual inputs.
Every single player saw the other faction not as human avatars, but as terrifying, aggressive, and high-level monsters.
The Vanguard commander swung his massive broadsword and cleanly decapitated a Legion rogue who was desperately trying to stab him with a poisoned dagger.
"Die, beast!" the commander roared, completely unaware that he had just murdered a player.
"This is incredible," Casanova laughed and leaned against the massive cast-iron frying pan of Mei.
The bard took off his pink feathered hat and casually fanned himself.
"It is like watching a really aggressive and highly theater production. Do we sell tickets?"
"It is a slaughter," Lila whispered and gripped her wooden staff.
The blue-haired Astral Arcanist looked genuinely horrified by the sheer unadulterated violence occurring just outside their protective dome. "They are ripping each other apart."
Dante didn’t laugh. He kept his eyes locked on the chaotic melee.
He didn’t care that his enemies were killing each other. It saved him the stamina and the cooldowns.
But his Intuition stat was still pinging. It was a low and persistent hum of danger that completely ignored the fighting armies.
"Something triggered the pollen drop," Dante said softly.
He looked back up at the dense towering peach trees surrounding the clearing.
The trees were still swaying slightly, though there was absolutely no wind in the enclosed valley.
Nyx pushed her dark glasses up her nose and furiously typed on her datapad.
"The system data is still heavily scrambled," the analyst reported, and her voice was tight with concentration.
"But the hostility signatures did not vanish when the pollen dropped. They multiplied. The trees are actively generating threat."
Before Dante could process the warning, a figure separated itself from the chaotic localized slaughter of the two armies.
It wasn’t a hallucinating player.
A small incredibly fast shadow darted out of the thick underbrush. It completely ignored the massive battle raging in the clearing.
It moved with terrifying agility as a blur of dark purple and silver that easily bypassed the swinging broadswords and exploding fireballs.
The figure sprinted directly toward the jade pedestal in the center of the clearing.
"We have a runner," Dante noted and stepped slightly forward.
The figure skidded to a halt just inches away from the glowing Celestial egg.
It was an NPC.
She looked like a young woman.
She was incredibly slender with pale violet skin and long pointed ears.
She wore a sleek skin-tight suit of dark leather armor covered in intricate glowing silver runes.
Her eyes were large, luminescent, and completely black without any visible pupils or irises.
[Entity Identified: Mischievous Boomshade Trickster]
[Level: 45]
[Faction: Rogue Sylvan]
"A Boomshade Trickster," Sera breathed. Her business demeanor was entirely replaced by genuine surprise.
"That is an incredibly rare race. They usually only spawn in the deepest most restricted zones of the Fey territories."
The Boomshade Trickster didn’t look at the massive battle happening thirty feet away.
She didn’t look at Dante or his squad standing safely inside the starlight dome.
Her solid black eyes were locked entirely on the [Prismatic Bloom Egg].
She giggled. It was a high-pitched incredibly unsettling sound that resounded clearly over the clashing of swords.
"Shiny," the Boomshade Trickster whispered and reached her small purple hands out toward the massive egg.
"Hey," Dante called out and stepped out of the protective halo of the dome of Aura.
The Boomshade Trickster froze.
She slowly turned her head and looked at the towering gold-armored Outworlder standing a few feet away.
Dante didn’t draw [Voidsever].
He didn’t want to accidentally vaporize the priceless Celestial egg resting on the pedestal.
He kept his hands resting casually on the hilt of the [Dawn-Breaker Blade] strapped to his hip.
"That is my egg," Dante said smoothly.
The Boomshade Trickster stared at him. She blinked her solid black eyes, then looked at the massive brutal fight occurring behind him.
She looked back at Dante, and a wide incredibly malicious smile spread across her pale violet face.
She didn’t try to grab the egg again.
She raised both of her hands, and her fingers glowed with intense concentrated pink light.
[Skill Executed: Hallucinatory Projection.]
She fired a massive concentrated beam of pure pink pollen directly into the face of Dante.
It was a point-blank unavoidable blast.
The pollen completely coated his armor and his helmet.
"Boss!" Casanova yelled and took a panicked step forward. He fully expected Dante to instantly turn around and start trying to murder the squad.
The pink dust slowly settled.
Dante didn’t move. He didn’t blink. He just stood there and looked at the Boomshade Trickster.
The system interface in the corner of his vision flashed a quiet entirely unbothered green notification.
[Status: Absolute Immunity Active.]
[Cognitive Disruption Negated.]
The [Aetherial Nectar] he had consumed in Ironhold completely flawlessly bypassed the hallucination.
The biological weapon designed to rewrite the reality of a player simply registered as mildly annoying dust.
Dante slowly wiped a smudge of pink pollen off his gold breastplate.
"I am going to ask you once," Dante said. His voice dropped to a cold terrifying register. "Step away from the pedestal."
The malicious smile of the Boomshade Trickster completely vanished. Her solid black eyes widened in absolute unfiltered shock.
She couldn’t comprehend how a player had just tanked a point-blank high-tier Sylvan illusion spell without flinching.
She didn’t try to attack again.
She turned around, activated a high-tier dash skill, and sprinted frantically back toward the dense tree line.
Dante didn’t chase her. He didn’t want to leave the Celestial egg undefended.
"Nyx," Dante ordered and did not take his eyes off the retreating rogue. "Track her."
"I have her signature," Nyx confirmed instantly. She pulled a glowing blue tracking marker up on her datapad.
"She is fast, but she is not teleporting. She is just running deeper into the grove."
Dante turned his attention back to the massive slaughter happening in the clearing.
The battle was winding down.
The hallucinogenic pollen had done its job entirely too well.
The two hundred elite players of Vanguard’s Legacy and the Legion of Blades had completely butchered each other.
The ground was entirely covered in dropped loot, shattered armor, and the fading blue pixels of deleted avatars.
Only a handful of heavily wounded players remained standing and still swung blindly at each other.
In the center of the carnage, Kaelus was fighting a losing battle.
The silver armor of the Warlord was completely ruined. It was heavily dented and covered in digital blood.
He was actively dueling a Vanguard commander, and both of them were completely convinced they were fighting a high-tier monster.
Kaelus swung his longsword in a desperate wide arc.
The Vanguard commander easily parried the exhausted strike. He stepped inside the guard of the Warlord and drove his broadsword directly through the chest of Kaelus.
[-15,000! Fatal Damage!]
Kaelus gasped and dropped to his knees.
The Warlord stared blankly at the sky as his health bar vanished.
He exploded into a cloud of blue pixels and was completely removed from the open-world map.
The Vanguard commander, heavily wounded and panting, let out a victorious roar.
Then, the duration of the pollen debuff finally expired.
The pink mist dissipated entirely. The systemic cognitive disruption lifted.
The Vanguard commander blinked and shook his head as the hallucinations faded.
He looked around the clearing and expected to see the corpses of the massive monster horde he had just defeated.
Instead, he saw the dropped loot and the unmistakable guild tabards of his own men and the Legion of Blades.
He realized exactly what he had just done. He had just spent ten minutes murdering his own allies and the rival guild.
The commander looked up, and his eyes locked onto Dante standing casually next to the glowing Celestial egg.
"You did this," the commander whispered in absolute horror and dropped his blood-stained broadsword into the dirt.
Dante didn’t even bother replying to the baseless accusation.
He triggered [Blink Step].
He teleported directly in front of the horrified Vanguard commander and drew the [Dawn-Breaker Blade] in the same motion.
He didn’t use a Zenith-tier skill. He just executed a clean horizontal decapitation strike.
[-18,000! OVERKILL!]
The commander shattered into pixels.
The clearing was finally entirely silent.
The massive two-guild ambush had been completely resolved without Dante having to burn a single major cooldown.
Dante sheathed his sword and walked back to the jade pedestal.
He didn’t hesitate.
He activated his [Band of the Void-Walker] and vacuumed the massive glowing [Prismatic Bloom Egg] directly into his infinite inventory.
"That was remarkably efficient," Sera noted and stepped out of the starlight dome. She was already calculating the auction value of the dropped gear littering the clearing.
"We are not done," Dante said and turned toward the thick tree line where the Boomshade Trickster had fled.
His Intuition stat was pinging again. It wasn’t the sharp spike of an ambush. It was a slow heavy thrum.
"Nyx," Dante asked. "Are those trees still reading as hostile?"
Nyx looked at her datapad. The screen was flashing a frantic warning red.
"Yes," Nyx whispered. "And they are moving."
