Chapter 162: Chapter 162: The Trap

Dante left Casanova to his highly questionable bartering methods near the arrival zone.

He led Lila, Mei, Sera, Nyx, Garrick, and Aura deeper into Rain valley.

The sprawling vibrant landscape was a sharp contrast to the brutal death traps they had navigated over the last few days.

The air was warm and filled with drifting pink petals. The ambient lighting was a soft perpetually golden afternoon.

But the serenity was a illusion. The presence of the major guilds completely ruined the atmosphere.

As they walked past a dense grove of peach trees, a heavily armored squad of Vanguard’s Legacy players aggressively blocked the dirt path.

"Zone is closed," a Vanguard lieutenant barked and rested a massive iron halberd on his shoulder. "The Syndicate is currently harvesting this quadrant. Turn around."

The lieutenant didn’t immediately recognize the [Aegis Vanguard] tags floating above their heads. He was too busy trying to look intimidating.

Dante didn’t stop walking. He didn’t even break his stride.

He didn’t draw [Voidsever]. He simply activated his [Asura Vanguard] class passive.

[Class Passive 1 (Aura of Despair) Active.]

The heavy suffocating pressure washed over the five Vanguard players.

The 50% defense reduction instantly stripped away the mitigation provided by their mid-tier armor.

But it was the psychological effect that truly hit them. The simulated dread flooded their neural links.

The lieutenant stopped talking. His confident sneer completely collapsed.

He looked at the glowing red eyes of Dante and the dark purple plating of his armor.

He finally recognized the anomaly.

The lieutenant didn’t swing his halberd. He dropped it.

He scrambled backward so fast he tripped over an exposed root and fell flat on his back in the dirt.

The other four players didn’t even wait for him. They broke formation and sprinted away into the peach trees, absolutely terrified.

"That passive is going to save us a lot of time," Nyx noted and typed on her datapad as they walked right past the panicked lieutenant without a second glance.

They pushed deeper into the valley and left the massive crowds of independent players far behind.

The trees here were older, the trunks thick and gnarled, and the canopy so dense it almost blocked out the golden sky.

The vibrant pink petals falling from the branches didn’t just drift in the wind. They seemed to swirl purposefully and accumulated in thick glowing piles on the grass.

[Zone Alert: The Deep Grove]

[Hazard Detected: High-Density Pollen.]

The Intuition stat of Dante pinged sharply.

He stopped and raised his hand to halt the party.

"Aura," Dante said quietly.

The Mystic Sovereign floated forward and pulsed her [Ultimate Guardian Halo].

The massive invisible dome of starlight expanded outward. It established the 60% damage reduction and the passive healing buff over the entire squad.

"What is it, Boss?" Mei asked. She dropped the massive cast-iron pan off her shoulder and gripped the handle tightly.

"Look at the petals," Dante pointed.

The pink petals swirling in the air weren’t just falling.

They were actively drifting toward them drawn like iron filings to a magnet.

As the petals neared the edge of the protective dome of Aura, they didn’t pass through. They sparked and burned up into tiny puffs of purple smoke upon contact with the starlight.

"It is a hallucinogenic toxin," Nyx analyzed and checked the environmental scanners of her datapad.

"Highly concentrated. The system is attempting to apply a continuous localized cognitive disruption debuff. If we were not standing inside the Halo, we would be completely compromised."

"A trap," Dante concluded.

The system hadn’t placed this hazard here to make the environment look pretty.

It was a dedicated defense mechanism designed to protect whatever high-tier asset was hidden in the center of the grove.

"We keep moving," Dante ordered. "Do not step outside the radius of Aura."

They advanced slowly, and the thick toxic pollen burned uselessly against the starlight dome.

After ten minutes of careful navigation through the twisting identical peach trees, the path opened up into a massive perfectly circular clearing.

In the center of the clearing, resting on a pedestal of pure polished jade, was a massive glowing egg.

The egg was easily three feet tall and colored in vibrant swirling patterns of pink, white, and gold.

It pulsed with a heavy rhythmic heartbeat that sent ripples through the ambient mana in the clearing.

[Item Identified: Prismatic Bloom Egg]

[Tier: Celestial (Unhatched)]

[Description: A highly volatile unhatched Celestial companion. Requires a massive influx of ambient mana to finalize the incubation process.]

"A Celestial pet," Sera whispered. Her business facade cracked entirely in the face of such raw unadulterated value.

"Dante, that is worth more than the entire auction combined. If a guild secures that, they have a permanent strategic advantage that cannot be bought."

Dante didn’t immediately rush the pedestal.

His Intuition stat was screaming at him. The clearing was too quiet.

The toxic pollen trap they had just navigated was designed to keep players out, but there were absolutely no physical guards stationed around the Celestial asset.

"It is too easy," Dante said and drew the [Dawn-Breaker Blade].

Before anyone could take a step toward the egg, the thick dense tree line surrounding the clearing violently rustled.

Dante didn’t turn around. He already knew they weren’t alone.

Two massive heavily armed formations stepped out of the woods and completely boxed them into the clearing.

To the left, a hundred elite players wearing the silver and blue tabards of the Legion of Blades formed a tight disciplined shield wall.

To the right, a hundred players wearing the gold and white of the Gilded Syndicate raised their weapons.

They had successfully navigated the pollen trap. They likely burned through thousands of high-tier cleansing potions and sacrificed lower-level members to brute-force their way through the hazard zone.

And they had arrived at the exact same time.

"Well, this is incredibly awkward," Casanova muttered. He had finally caught up to the group, and his pink hat sat slightly askew on his head.

"I leave you guys for ten minutes to do some networking, and you immediately get us surrounded by two armies."

Silas wasn’t leading the Gilded Syndicate detachment.

He was likely back in his guildhall aggressively managing the financial fallout of the auction. The Vanguard force was led by a heavily scarred commander.

But Kaelus was leading the Legion of Blades personally.

The Warlord stepped forward, and his silver longsword was drawn.

He looked at the glowing Celestial egg on the jade pedestal, then looked at the Vanguard commander, and finally locked his gaze onto Dante.

"Stand down, Dan," Kaelus ordered. His voice echoed across the clearing.

The tone of the Warlord was tight and completely lacked his usual unshakeable arrogance. The public humiliation at the resurrection plaza had clearly rattled him.

"You cannot fight two guilds and secure the asset simultaneously."

The Vanguard commander scoffed and pointed his massive broadsword at Kaelus.

"The Legion has no claim here, Warlord! Silas has authorized total control of this quadrant! Back off, or we will eliminate you along with the anomaly!"

Kaelus sneered. "Your Guild Master is bankrupt. You have no authority. The Legion takes the egg."

Dante stood in the center of the clearing and watched the two opposing commanders argue.

He didn’t activate [Asura’s Descent].

He didn’t want to use his ultimate skills to wipe two hundred players.

It was a waste of a massive one-hour cooldown. He needed to save his trump cards for whatever actual boss mechanic the game was going to throw at them to protect the Celestial egg.

He just needed a distraction.

Dante looked at the dense towering peach trees surrounding the clearing.

The trees were incredibly thick. Their massive branches were heavily laden with the pink glowing blossoms that generated the toxic pollen trap.

He noticed something strange.

The trees weren’t swaying in the wind. The air in the clearing was completely still.

But the branches were moving.

The eyes of Dante narrowed. He focused his vision and utilized the passive perception boost from his massive stat pool.

He didn’t see bark or leaves. He saw shifting digital code.

"Nyx," Dante whispered and did not take his eyes off the closest peach tree. "Scan the environment. Not the players. Scan the trees."

Nyx adjusted her dark glasses and quickly typed on her datapad.

A second later, the analyst gasped, and her face went completely pale.

"Dante," Nyx breathed, her voice trembling slightly. "Those are not trees."

"I did not think so," Dante murmured.

"They are reading as hostile entities," Nyx confirmed rapidly.

"The system is masking their nameplates, but the underlying data structure is identical to a Gold-tier mob."

Dante smiled. It was a cold incredibly calculating expression.

He didn’t warn the rival guilds. He didn’t tell them they were currently standing directly underneath a massive ambush waiting to trigger.

He turned to his squad.

"Lila, Mei, Casanova, Garrick," Dante ordered quietly.

"Collapse the formation. Everyone get directly underneath Aura. Do not step outside the starlight halo."

The squad didn’t ask questions.

They immediately formed a tight localized circle in the absolute center of the clearing near the jade pedestal. They ensured they were fully covered by the 60% damage reduction buff of the Mystic Sovereign.

Kaelus noticed the shift in the formation of Dante. The Warlord gripped his silver sword tighter.

"Are you preparing a defense, anomaly?" Kaelus demanded. "It will not save you. Legion! Prepare to charge!"

The Vanguard commander roared and refused to be outpaced. "Syndicate! Advance! Take the egg!"

The two rival factions ignored each other and charged simultaneously. They fully intended to crush the seven-man party in the center of the clearing.

Dante didn’t raise his sword to defend the party.

He simply waited.

The moment the two hundred heavily armored players crossed the threshold of the clearing and stepped directly beneath the massive overarching branches of the peach trees, the trap finally sprang.

The system didn’t drop a boss from the sky. It didn’t trigger a massive explosion.

The forest itself woke up.
