Chapter 284: More Human
The appointment ended on a good note, and Ye’tab was going back to the ship with a long list of ultrasound pictures of the babies. I had never seen anyone so happy to know that he was a father. And we all knew that he was.
I had Midnight, Da’kea, and Ye’tab inside of me, and I came out with four babies. One Saalistaja must have fathered two, but none of us really cared about who it might have been.
But holy fuck was their sperm ever potent. Or maybe it was the fact that I was genetically modified to populate planets.
However, I was feeling bad for Tha’juen and GA. We were interrupted before they could have had their turn, so none of the babies could be theirs.
"Don’t worry, my hearts," said Da’kea, whispering in my ear. The guys were once again invisible as I strolled down the streets and took in the sights and sounds of Earth. It was amazing how I could change so much, and yet the world didn’t appear to change at all. "They are not upset or jealous. It just means that your other three mates will have the pleasure of servicing you during your next heat."
I stopped dead in my tracks, trying my best not to shout and scream at the air around me. I was pretty sure that if I wound up in a mental institution, I was not making my flight home. Instead, I pasted a strained smile on my face and continued walking.
I hated to break it to the guys, but I was completely miserable right now, and talking about getting me knocked up again was not the way to go if you were trying to keep me happy. Promising me that it would never happen again would have been the smart path.
We would have both known that they were nothing more than empty words, but it would have made me feel a lot better about things.
Ever the peacekeeper, I nodded my head and kept my mouth shut.
Unfortunately, other than knowing how many little ones were growing inside of me, we didn’t learn anything more.
Dr. Deshaye had pointed out that I was the only human in the known universe carrying multiple babies from multiple fathers, so not knowing how things were to progress was par for the course.
She almost rubbed her hands in glee when Da’kea offered to bring her along with us. He thought he was forcing her into something that she didn’t want, but I could see the gleam of excitement in her eyes at the idea of going out into space.
She did put on a good show, though; I would have to give her that. But Da’kea felt much better when he managed to ’convince’ her to stay with me to monitor the babies until their birth.
He even offered to bring her back to Earth. But speaking from experience, that was never going to happen. Once you managed to see some of the mysteries of the universe, going back to your everyday life was much less interesting.
And, as she pointed out, there were still seven other women out there who could use a doctor who understood their unique needs. Oh no, she was amazing at manipulating my guys into doing exactly what she wanted while making them think it was their idea.
I might have been pissed if I couldn’t stop laughing about it. I really did have a lot to learn from the other woman.
I continued to stroll around the downtown core, going in and out of shops. Thanks to Jun Li, I didn’t have to worry about money. He set me up with an unlimited credit card and a hefty bank account.
When I asked him about it, he merely stated that since money was nothing more than numbers seen on a screen, it was easy for him to manipulate those numbers in our favor.
He then went on to say that he had some plans when we arrived and asked if it would be okay for us to stay here for two weeks. My old home was still unoccupied, and he had all the utilities switched back on so me and the guys could stay there instead of going back and forth all of the time. In fact, things were falling so well into place that I didn’t doubt a certain AI helped it along.
I had a sneaking suspicion about what he was up to, but since he was playing this one close to the chest, I would let him keep his secrets.
"Professor Bai?" asked a male voice from behind me. I spun around to see who it was and recognized one of the police officers who I used to go to homicide scenes with.
"Marcus," I said with a smile on my face. "How have you been?"
He looked startled at both my smile and my question, but he quickly answered that he had been doing good. "I was going to ask if you had disappeared off the face of the Earth, but looking at you now, I think I understand," he continued, grinning as he looked down at my stomach.
It made me ridiculously happy that he hadn’t asked if he could touch it or just did it without permission. The man was smart; what more could I say?
"Yeah," I agreed, rubbing my belly.
"Are you still with its father?" he asked. Okay, so I guess you could only credit a human man with so much intelligence before they tried their damn hardest to prove you wrong.
There was the sound of multiple growls around us, and Marcus jumped a bit, looking around to try and find the source.
I hid my grin. "Yes, it was a bit of a whirlwind, but we are happy," I answered him.
"At least you seem a lot more human," laughed Marcus as he raised his hand and walked away. "Hopefully, I’ll be able to see you on a crime scene after you give birth. Your replacement isn’t nearly as good as you, and it is making our life and the DA’s harder."
I smiled and waved bye, not bothering to respond to his statement. I was happy with my life as it was, and I wasn’t going to give it up for anything in the known universe.
