Chapter 52: Last Stand!

From how the system explicitly described those tasks as ’impossible burdens’, Leon already knew they would be nothing but easy.

If a legendary hero had to sweat and bleed to finish them, a mortal player like him would undoubtedly have to face hell just to clear a single one.

The sheer scale of the task made his head throb with an oncoming headache.

’And there are twelve of them... twelve!’ he thought in annoyance.

Dealing with one impossible burden was already exhausting enough to think about, but having to conquer twelve distinct mythical labours felt like the gauntlets were actively playing a prank on him.

A loud, furious screech suddenly shattered his thoughts, drawing his attention back to the reality of the battlefield.

Larry shouted at the top of his lungs, his voice cracked with pain and desperation, "Focus on your opponent, dammit!"

He was losing his mind, utterly humiliated by the fact that Leon was casually daydreaming while standing right in front of an active ambush party.

Leon hissed in annoyance, his eyes narrowing as he was rudely dragged out of his thoughts. He turned his head back to the man, his dark gaze locking onto Larry’s pathetic figure.

The high-ranking B-rank player was still crouched heavily on the cold ground, his body trembling violently as he kept one hand pressed tightly against his shattered chest armor.

The damage Leon had inflicted with that single casual counterattack was severe.

Thick, dark blood kept pouring down his lips in a steady stream, dripping onto the asphalt below.

His face looked incredibly pale, completely drained of color from the internal trauma and the sudden shock of having his ultimate defense instantly pulverized.

Leon didn’t show a single shred of sympathy for the injured man. He took a slow step forward, his voice dropping into a dangerously low, calm tone. "I held back with that punch, so I don’t kill you by mistake. Do you want to die that badly, huh?"

Larry gnashed his teeth in bitter frustration.

The humiliating reality of his situation crashed down on him, because he knew deep down that what Leon said was indeed true.

If the boy had put even a fraction more power into that counterattack, Larry’s chest wouldn’t just be caved in; his entire torso would have been completely obliterated into a bloody mist on the spot.

It didn’t mean he would give up though, despite the terrifying display of overwhelming strength.

Larry was an experienced B-rank player who had survived countless close encounters with death in high-level dungeons.

His pride and his survival instinct refused to let him submit. He was still sure there was still more he could do against Leon, and with proper coordination, they could still turn the tides of this ambush.

Leon Allistar... abandoned by his family and basically the world, I’m sure if I let him go scot-free here... he’ll cause a lot of damage!’ he thought.

A person who had suffered at the very bottom of society for so long, suddenly obtaining the power to crush high-ranking players with a single punch, was an absolute nightmare scenario for the established guilds.

To Larry, Leon was basically a wild card. He was a dangerous fuse that had just been lit, one he desperately wanted to contain here before it exploded and ruined everything the guilds had built.

Leaving him alive and unmonitored would mean inviting total destruction upon themselves in the near future.

From behind, Varis suddenly roared, the sound cutting through the tense atmosphere of the clearing.

The cry wasn’t the proud, booming challenge of a mighty beast like before; instead, it was a ragged, painful sound filled with agony and fury.

The four-meter giant was gone, but the broken man was slowly getting back up on his feet, leaning heavily against the deeply dented car for support as his legs trembled violently.

He was clearly weaker than before though, his strength severely depleted by the sheer trauma of Leon’s single punch.

His breathing was shallow and uneven, and dark blood kept dripping down his chest in a steady, sickening stream.

The front of his torso was still caved in, a horrific physical reminder of the boy’s absolute power that his high-grade armor had failed to protect him from.

He pointed a shaking, blood-stained finger directly at Leon, his eyes wide and burning with bloodlust.

He gritted his bloody teeth, his voice raspy and choked with fluid as he said, "You... I’ll kill you..."

He was completely blinded by the humiliation of being knocked out in a single blow, his mind entirely consumed by the desire to rip Leon apart regardless of the cost to his own life.

Leon’s eyes narrowed slightly at the pathetic sight of the ruined teacher, his expression shifting from amusement to absolute disdain.

He looked at the trembling man for a brief second, and then he scoffed loudly.

Larry on the other hand, was incredibly excited seeing his partner get back up on his feet.

Even if Varis was severely weakened, having another high-level combatant active on the field meant they could finally execute a pincer movement and overwhelm Leon’s defenses through sheer numbers.

Seizing the moment before the panic could settle back into his squad, Larry turned his head and shouted fiercely to the rest of the players gathered around the perimeter. "What the fuck are you all doing standing like that... attack him now!"

The surrounding players shivered violently at the sound of Larry’s furious command, a collective wave of intense anxiety washing over the entire perimeter.

Their hands trembled against the grips of their weapons as their eyes nervously moved from Leon, who was standing completely still and relaxed, then back to Larry and Varis.

Both of their B-rank leaders were clearly in terrible states, covered in their own blood and gasping heavily for air.

The sight of that alone didn’t give them much confidence to attack. Seeing the two strongest powerhouses in their entire operation get completely pulverized in a matter of seconds made the lower-rank hunters freeze in absolute dread.

They knew that if a single casual strike from Leon could cave in high-grade armor and shatter bones, stepping forward into his range would mean instant death for anyone else, regardless of what Larry ordered.

Varis suddenly roared once again, the desperate sound tearing violently through his raw throat as he forced his broken body past its physical limits.

The magical energy inside his core erupted into a wild, uncontrollable frenzy, and his body increased greatly in size once again, expanding even faster and wider than it had during his initial transformation.

The bones cracked and reset as he grew, until he fully transformed into his Demonic Yak Form, a towering nightmare of muscle and feral malice.

He didn’t stop there, though. Knowing his current physical frame was already failing him due to the severe internal injuries Leon had inflicted, he threw his massive head back and shouted at the top of his lungs, "Last Stand!"

The moment the words left his monstrous maw, a dark, pulsing crimson aura exploded outward from his skin.

The heavy horns on his head turned a deep, burning red color, looking like freshly forged iron pulled straight from a furnace.

At the same time, the thick red furs wrapped tightly around his massive body developed a slight, metallic shine to them, hardening into a defensive layer that vibrated with intense magical power.

The ability he had just triggered, Last Stand, was basically a specialized B-rank skill that allowed him to keep on fighting like an unstoppable berserker for exactly one minute.

It was a forbidden, high-risk technique reserved only for absolute life-or-death situations where failure was not an option.

Within that one minute, any damage he took from his opponent’s attacks would be directly converted into pure physical strength, making him hit harder the more he was beaten.

Furthermore, his total H/P wouldn’t go below one point during the entire sixty seconds, thereby preserving his life no matter how devastating the blows he received were.

He became a literal immortal juggernaut, completely immune to death for a brief window of time.

The moment the skill deactivated though, the severe drawback of the ability would immediately take effect. He would be left with only one point of H/P remaining in his health pool, and his body would enter a state of absolute exhaustion.

At that critical point, his defenses would drop to zero, and even the minor bite of an ordinary bug could easily kill him on the spot. It was a complete gamble, trading his entire future for one single minute of absolute invincibility.

Larry, seeing his partner get so incredibly fired up and unlock his ultimate form, felt his own fading courage rush right back into his chest.

The terrifying sight of the immortal Demonic Yak Form filled him with renewed hope that they could win, and he shouted in pure excitement also. "Yes! Tear him to pieces, Varis! He can’t break through that!"
