Chapter 139: Shadow Pawn
Covered in burnt marks caused by the explosion, his back looked unusually red even with some parts of it now visibly healing.
Dried skins seemed to flake off of his body as dead cells were replaced by a new one.
His back was recovering faster than she had initially expected, and it was a good thing to know.
What she was confused about and did not expect, though, was the fact there actually exists a huge scar on his back.
The scar did not look fresh and seemed to be made by a blade rather than a burnt mark, indicating that it was not something he had sustained earlier. She did not think that the Shadow Monster landed a hit on him as well, so this scar could only be an old one he sustained long before they had awakened.
The slash-like scar covered his upper and lower torso. The scar extended from his right shoulder, all the way to his left elbow.
Judging by the scar, she could tell that the wound it originated from was no joke.
She could tell that it was made by a sharp object, probably a sword that slashed him diagonally from his shoulder all the way to his elbow.
’Is this scar actually the reason why he always wears a hoodie?’
It was not unusual for someone to wear a hoodie in school. Unlike before the apocalypse, where dress codes were being implemented, schools nowadays were no longer as strict in that regard.
However, someone wearing a hoodie every day was definitely something out of the norm. This was also the reason why she had noticed him since the first week of school.
He was the only one who only wore a hoodie at school, after all.
Seeing the scars on his back, Lexie kind of guessed that this might be the reason why he was always wearing one.
Considering Desther’s attitude, he would obviously not allow others to see such a striking scar on his back.
Lexie wondered where he got that scar, though.
At this time, Desther finally covered his body with the coat, ending the sight that Lexie was unusually focusing on.
The coat’s size was just right for Desther, the hem fell right below his knees. Covering not only his upper body but also his lower body as well. The space inside was also big enough, allowing him to move in comfort without feeling any restriction.
Although it was not the best, Desther could tell that it was the best of what was available for them.
He turned to Lexie and saw her look away with a pink cheek.
"Thank you!"
He thanked her for the coat, he was indeed impressed by her handiwork and her ability to create such a thing with limited materials and time.
Lexie nodded her head in affirmation, her gaze still locked away from him, as if avoiding any form of eye contact with him.
"Let’s get going."
Desther turned around and began to walk away.
They had already rested enough and had already wasted enough time.
Any minute now and the teachers or those guards they hired would surely arrive on the battlefield. He could not let them see that he was in the vicinity of the explosion, especially wearing a coat made of leaves.
He and Noah had left some spare change and some supplies in their treehouse. Desther planned to go there to get proper cloth for himself and Lexie.
Although what she created was good, having a ’real’ cloth still beat it by a huge margin.
Even Lexie herself stated this was only temporary and was not meant to last long.
He had also shared this idea with her, and she agreed knowing that it was close enough to the main base anyway.
Although she was already prepared to become the scapegoat, it does not mean that she would present herself in such a sight.
She does not need good clothes or fancy dress either, she could just borrow a shirt or two from Desther, and that would be enough to make her presentable.
With that being said, the two made their journey back to the tree house.
This time, since they decided not to hunt any monsters that blocked their way, their travelling speed was much faster when they were on their way here.
It took them almost half a day to reach the valley, but it would surely not take that long for them to return to the treehouse with their current speed.
With Desther’s Sense skill being employed, the two of them did not face any sort of obstruction at all. And if there are any, Desther or Lexie would eliminate them without batting an eye.
As they were moving, Desther decided to check the notifications that blasted through his perception since earlier.
There were a lot of them. And if not for the fact that they actually do not affect his vision, he would surely see nothing in front of the screens of notifications in front of his eyes.
[ Marked target eliminated! ]
[ Free Attributes: +228 ]
[ Theft Mark: 10/10 ]
Including this recent gain, Desther now has a total of 761 Free Attributes at his disposal. He planned to add them all later on to increase his raw attributes.
Seven hundred sixty Free Attributes would net him one hundred fifty-two new raw attributes to his five attributes.
Closing this screen, Desther moved his gaze to check on the other screens as well.
[ You have killed a monster- Shadow Pawn: Experience points +150% ]
[ For killing a monster way above your Tier: Tier 3- Experience points +100% (Bonus) ]
[ Your level has increased! ]
[ All Attributes: +201 ]
[ Free Attributes: +10 ]
[ Your level has increased! ]
[ All Attributes: +201 ]
[ Free Attributes: +10 ]
’So that bastard’s name is Shadow Pawn, huh.’
Knowing it did not change the fact that it was a strong opponent.
From the hints, Desther finally confirmed that it was indeed a Tier 3 monster. Its strength was commendable, probably at an early stage of that tier.
