Chapter 182: A Contract
The sky above the endless Ufrifan desert was bleeding, but the atmosphere inside the massive, displaced crater had plummeted unnaturally.
Julian stood at the epicenter of the depression, his metamorphosis complete. He was no longer the elegant, tailor-suited S-Rank Commander. He was a towering, demonic nightmare of jagged, pitch-black ice and elongated, razor-sharp talons.
Hide stood perfectly balanced on the jagged icy rim of the crater, his dark metal crown resting heavily upon his forehead. Through his True Sight, Hide watched in grim, suffocating silence as the raw mana output radiating from Julian’s body violently expanded.
It didn’t just double; it effortlessly tripled. The crushing density of the corrupted energy was staggering, twisting the very fabric of the air around them.
It was the undeniable, apocalyptic pressure of a Higher Calamity Lord. A B-Rank monster.
And the reason was finally standing right in front of him. A Calamity beast had somehow been living inside Julian’s body.
Hide’s glowing blue eyes narrowed into predatory slits. He didn’t immediately draw his twin blades. His mind, honed by survival instincts, was racing at lightning speed, piecing together the impossible puzzle.
A sudden, jarring memory flashed vividly in Hide’s mind. He was back in the sterile, white hospital room in Area 17, right after his first gate break. He remembered the beeping monitors and the smell of antiseptic. He remembered Claire standing near the door, her arms crossed, asking him a deeply unsettling, pointed question.
"When we found you, you were standing in a posture we associate with Calamity Lord-controlled hosts," Claire had said. "There are cases where partial possession leaves a residue and impulses that aren’t yours. We need to rule it out."
At the time, Hide had been entirely oblivious, assuming it was just bureaucratic paranoia. But what he was witnessing in the crater below seemed to play out exactly like that terrifying theory. Julian was possessed by a Calamity Lord.
Yet, as Hide stared down at the monster wearing human skin, the logic didn’t completely add up. If a Calamity Lord had completely taken over the vessel, why did Julian still act so remarkably human? He had sophisticated corporate ambitions, he engaged in petty tournament politics, he wore custom suits, and he spoke casually of ’suppressing ourselves into these bodies.’ More importantly, Julian had explicitly mentioned the word contract.
So it seemed that this was not a standard, parasitic possession. There was a way for a human and a Calamity Lord to come to a mutual agreement.
But why? Hide’s brow furrowed beneath his dark crown. Why would a feral beast, whose entire biological existence was wired to slaughter humanity and take over the human world, ever agree to help a human host? What possible benefit did playing corporate games give a Calamity Lord?
Hide couldn’t seem to completely grasp the twisted mechanics of the situation. Seeking answers, he turned his focus entirely inward. Deep within the boundless void of his Dark Abyssal Core, the massive, A-Rank phantom rested.
’Doomy,’ Hide asked telepathically in his mind. ’Explain this to me. Why would a Calamity Lord make a contract with a human?’
The colossal, teal-furred Calamity Beast slowly opened its emerald eye within the dark void of Hide’s soul. Its deep, ancient, and highly resonant voice vibrated directly into Hide’s mind.
"There are rare instances, My Liege," the Doom Overseer began, its tone methodical and analytical, "when a Calamity beast attempts to forcefully take over a human vessel, but the human soul proves to be far more resilient than anticipated. To resist the dominance."
Hide listened intently, keeping his outward expression completely deadpan while Julian flexed his massive icy talons below.
"If the original body of the beast is completely destroyed before it can fully take over the human body," the Doom Overseer continued, "it is trapped within the vessel alongside the human soul. Calamity Lords usually only try this desperate measure when either their own physical body is becoming fatally fragile, or the human body they have targeted is exceptionally strong."
The phantom paused, the dark mana swirling around its majestic ribbon-antlers. "Despite how strong the human body might be, a soul is relatively easy to kill. It is weak, fragile, and most of the time, it acts as a mere mirror reflecting the human’s deepest, darkest traumas. It is easily shattered. However..."
"Ahh, my apologies, My Liege," the Doom Overseer suddenly interrupted itself, lowering its heavy head respectfully. "I seem to have gone too far with my rambling."
’Keep going,’ Hide commanded instantly.
"The thing is," the phantom quickly resumed, "the human soul is mostly not capable of using its physical core. But the souls of Calamity Lords can. So, they attempt to completely take over the body to wield that power unhindered. But in the rare case that the human soul learns to utilize the core to defend itself, and fiercely does not let the Calamity Lord take absolute control... they reach a stalemate. Trapped together, they eventually have to make a contract to survive."
Now, the picture was completely clear to Hide. The arrogant S-Rank Commander and the B-Rank Calamity Lord were essentially holding a gun to each other’s heads, forced to share the steering wheel.
The telepathic conversation with the Doom Overseer had only taken exactly four human seconds. But to an apex predator hyped on raw corrupted mana, four seconds of absolute silence was an unbearable insult.
"Are you not going to say something, scum?" Julian rasped. The overlapping voices grated aggressively against the frozen air, carrying a lethal, impatient edge.
Hide’s mind rapidly calculated his next move. Julian wholeheartedly believed that Hide was a fellow Calamity Lord hiding inside a human vessel—likely because of the dark, corrupted aura Hide naturally emitted. Fighting a B-Rank powerhouse head-on in an open desert was suicidal.
Hide thought that he should play along.
"Zenith," Hide ordered silently.
Thick, suffocating mists of pitch-black mana violently exploded from Hide’s back. The towering, four-foot-tall phantom executioner materialized smoothly behind him, its featureless visor pulsing with a dangerous blue light as its heavy black-steel greatsword rested effortlessly in its grip.
Simultaneously, Hide activated his Abyssal Scale Carapace to its full extent. He didn’t just summon it to his arms or his chest. He pushed his mana output, commanding the S-Rank skill to cover his entire body. The dark-steel scales rapidly shifted and crawled across every square inch of his skin. They locked over his throat, sealed across his jaw, and aggressively encased his entire face, leaving only two narrow, razor-sharp slits for his fiercely glowing blue eyes to pierce through.
Standing on the rim of the crater, completely submerged in pitch-black, demonic armor, Hide looked exactly like a humanoid monster forged from the abyss.
As Zenith’s intimidating body settled behind him, Hide spoke. He deliberately deepened his voice, forcing it into a harsh, hollow rasp that sounded completely devoid of any human empathy.
"I didn’t have to make a contract," Hide declared, looking down at the icy demon with absolute, chilling disdain. "I am not weak as the likes of you."
Julian’s glowing white eyes narrowed to microscopic pinpricks. The freezing wind whipping around the crater suddenly stopped.
"I have full control of this body," Hide lied smoothly, projecting the arrogant, terrifying superiority of a supreme beast that had entirely devoured its host’s fragile soul.
"How dare you..." Julian hissed. The icy breath escaped his fanged mouth in a thick, furious cloud. His initial surprise quickly morphed into a volatile, seething indignation. For a lesser beast to mock his compromised existence was a fatal, unforgivable offense.
Julian gritted his teeth, the jagged ice cracking violently along his jawline. But as he glared deep inside the dark side, his blinding white eyes shifted from Hide’s armored form to the silent, towering shadow standing directly behind him.
Julian took a better look at Zenith. His monstrous pupils contracted as his advanced, B-Rank perception scanned the phantom executioner’s internal mana structure. He peered straight through the dense dark mana, looking for the pulsing, biological core that every living Calamity Beast possessed.
Julian tilted his head. The furious indignation on his face slowly melted into a cold, terrifyingly sharp realization.
"That isn’t even a real core..." Julian growled, his fangs baring in a wicked, unhinged sneer as he identified the transplanted anchor acting as Zenith’s core. The chilling aura around him spiked to catastrophic levels.
Julian’s eyes snapped back to Hide, burning with the sheer, unadulterated bloodlust of a deceived predator.
"You think you can play with me, kid?" Julian roared, his double-edged voice echoing like an apocalyptic avalanche.
Well, fuck.
Beneath the dark-steel helm, Hide gritted his teeth, a bead of cold sweat trailing down his neck. It seemed like his grand plan had failed spectacularly. By trying to play the superior monster, he had just completely, irreversibly enraged a Calamity Lord whose strength, as far as Hide had gauged, sat comfortably at the peak of B-Rank.
