Chapter 181: Devil in Disguise

The sky above the endless Ufrifan desert was bleeding. Deep, bruised hues of crimson, burning orange, and violent violet tore across the horizon, casting long, distorted shadows over the shifting dunes. The sun was almost down, sinking agonizingly slowly into the earth, yet it seemed as though the celestial body had deliberately stopped its descent, pausing to witness the impossible outcome of the confrontation about to unfold.

At the epicenter of the desolate basin, the massive crater smoked. Hide stood perfectly balanced on the jagged rim of the displaced sand. The jagged, eight-pointed crown of dark metal sat upon his forehead, his glowing blue eyes piercing through the settling dust, ringed with an ancient, lethal violet light.

Down in the depression, Julian lay in a twisted heap. The supersonic impact had shredded the back of his pristine, tailor-made suit and shattered the expensive artifact rings on his fingers. A normal human—even a high-tier Awakened—would have been reduced to a pulverized smear of blood because of the impact in such hot sand. But S-Ranks were different. Their cellular density was fortified by decades of mana saturation.

A low, guttural sound echoed from the bottom of the crater. It wasn’t a groan of pain. It was a terrifying, vibrating growl of rage.

Julian’s fingers dug into the sand. The air pressure in the desert violently dropped.

"You..." Julian hissed, his voice losing every trace of its cultured, gentlemanly charm.

The S-Rank pushed himself up to his knees. His head snapped toward Hide, his bottomless, manic eyes burning with a blinding, psychotic fury. The ambient mana in the desert completely ruptured. Julian unleashed a catastrophic, unfiltered wave of his icy mana. It poured from his core like a ruptured dam, overwhelming the sweltering desert heat in a fraction of a millisecond.

The dark sand beneath Julian’s boots instantly turned blindingly white. The sheer volume of the S-Rank’s mana materialized as pure, flawless ice, violently expanding outward from his body in every direction. It didn’t just crawl across the ground; massive, jagged glaciers erupted from the bedrock below, while the moisture in the arid air above simultaneously crystallized, raining down thick, heavy sheets of pure white ice to seal the crater.

Hide did the same, the temperature around him dropped to absolute zero, threatening to flash-freeze his blood in his veins, but the dark mana swirling within his Dark Abyssal Core roared in defiance.

Hide raised his right hand, his palm facing the ascending tide of white destruction.

"Abyssal Frost."

A thick, suffocating cloud of pitch-black, corrupted energy violently erupted from his palm. It hit the desert air and instantly solidified. While Julian’s ice was blindingly pure and radiated a biting, atmospheric cold, Hide’s dark ice was a terrifying void—it didn’t just freeze the environment; it violently devoured the heat, plunging the temperature into an unnatural abyss.

The wave of pitch-black ice surged downward from the rim, expanding with catastrophic velocity to meet the rising tide of white.

CRASH!

The two opposing elements of absolute zero collided perfectly in the dead center of the massive crater. The impact was deafening, a sound like continents grinding against one another. The white ice and the black ice crashed, tangled, and desperately pushed against each other, neither willing to yield. The sheer kinetic force of the clash forced the expanding glaciers upward, curving over the heads of the two combatants until they slammed shut at the apex.

Within seconds, the entire crater was completely enclosed. They were trapped inside a colossal, perfectly bisected dome of ice.

The scene inside the enclosed battlefield was breathtakingly immersive, a surreal painting of two conflicting domains.

On Julian’s side, the pure white ice acted as a flawless array of prisms. The bleeding red and orange rays of the dying sun pierced through the translucent glaciers, heavily refracting and bouncing across the millions of frozen crystalline facets. The entire southern hemisphere of the dome was bathed in a blinding, chaotic inferno of warm colors. It looked exactly as if Julian’s side of the dome was violently burning, engulfed in an illusion of frozen fire.

In stark, terrifying contrast, Hide’s northern hemisphere of the dome was an absolute void. The pitch-black ice absorbed every single photon of light that dared to touch it. It did not reflect. It did not refract. It simply consumed.

Hide stood in a desolate, suffocating darkness, his silver hair and glowing blue eyes the only sources of illumination amidst the terrifying, jagged black frost. It was a physical manifestation of his soul—cold, silent, and endlessly deep.

Julian slowly pushed himself up to his feet. He cracked his neck, the sound echoing sharply across the frozen amphitheater, and casually dusted the sand off his shredded suit coat. The blinding, psychotic rage that had consumed him just moments ago seemed to evaporate, replaced by a cold, calculating clarity.

"I just got it, you dumb piece of shit," Julian murmured, his voice echoing smoothly through the frozen air. He looked up, his manic eyes tracing the terrifying silhouette of Hide standing in the dark.

Julian’s gaze lingered on the jagged black scales covering Hide’s body, the dark metal crown resting on his forehead, and the suffocating void of the black ice surrounding him. "And what is up with that crown and black ice? What the hell are you? What is with that absurd speed..."

Suddenly, Julian stopped mid-sentence. He tilted his head slightly. The manic intensity in his eyes gleamed with a sudden, profound realization, and a wide, unsettling smile slowly spread across his handsome face.

"Have you..." Julian paused, letting out a soft, echoing chuckle. "Have you made a contract with a Calamity Lord?" He asked curiously.

Hide stood perfectly still on the rim of the dark ice, his expression a mask of absolute, unbothered stone. But internally, his mind hitched. His eyes widened slightly, the faint violet rings around his pupils pulsing in the dark.

"A contract with a Calamity Lord?" Hide asked, his voice deadpan but laced with genuine confusion.

A contract? A mutual, binding agreement with the very monstrosities that sought to eradicate humanity? It went against every single fundamental law of the Exterminator world. It was impossible.

Julian laughed, a rich, cultured sound that slowly began to distort at the edges. "You don’t know? But that can’t be... stop playing dumb. I can smell the dark mana on you. It’s soaking your bones. It’s bleeding from your pores. You reek of the Abyss, kid."

Julian took a slow step forward. The ice beneath his boots didn’t crack; it seemed to eagerly welcome his weight.

"If you aren’t contracted... then how are alive with consuming our mana?"

Suddenly, Hide’s assumptions about Julian and his talents and what he was capable of fractured.

Julian’s body began to physically break apart.

The S-Rank human didn’t summon an artifact. He didn’t activate a high-tier talent, but still, his very biology mutated. With a sickening, wet crunch of tearing flesh and shifting bone, four distinct, massive horns violently erupted from Julian’s skull. Two jagged, spiraling horns curved aggressively upwards toward the roof of the dome, while two thicker, brutal horns hooked sharply downwards, framing his jawline.

The pristine, pale skin of Julian’s hands rapidly hardened, turning into solid, translucent blue ice. The fingers elongated, the joints snapping and reforming as they grew into the massive, razor-sharp talons of a pure monster.

Hide watched in stunned silence as the metamorphosis continued. Julian’s jaw unhinged slightly, his perfectly straight teeth elongating and sharpening into a terrifying, interlocking row of a devil’s fangs.

"It’s hard to suppress ourselves into these bodies," Julian spoke.

His voice was no longer just the smooth baritone of a human gentleman. It possessed a terrifying double edge—two voices overlapping in perfect synchronization. One was Julian’s, and the other was something ancient, grating, and unfathomably deep.

Julian slowly lifted his head, locking his gaze onto Hide. Hide’s breath caught in his throat. Julian’s human eyes were completely gone. The irises and pupils had been entirely swallowed by an icy, blinding white light. Thick, jagged cracks of frost spider-webbed outward from his eye sockets, running aggressively along his forehead and crawling down his cheeks like a parasitic curse.

He wasn’t a human who possessed the power of ice. He was a monster wearing a human skin.

Julian spread his massive, icy talons, the fractured, burning light of the sun reflecting off his monstrous form. His double-edged voice echoed through the dome, dripping with sadistic anticipation and a twisted sense of kinship.

"Come on, show yourself too," Julian mocked, his devilish grin widening. "Or are you afraid that I am at a Higher rank than you?"
