Chapter 944: Chapter 924: 5 Weeks Pregnant
At the same time.
With Si Yuheng and his group leaving, the corridor of the patient care unit returned to silence.
Huo Zhenyang pushed open the outer door of the ICU and walked inside.
Inside the ward, only the faint ticking sounds of the medical equipment remained, as there were no other noises.
Even the breathing of the person on the bed was so weak it was pitiful, like a broken thread.
He knelt down, his gaze fixed on Jiayi’s body. The white gauze wrapped around her head made her face appear even more delicate. Her crystalline, translucent skin, her eyelashes drooping down, her eyes tightly shut—there was no hint of them opening.
The rough pads of his fingers gently brushed against her soft cheek, and her skin was chilly to the touch, sending a shiver through him, as if blood had stopped flowing through her veins.
For a moment, he wanted to hold her tightly like he always did, using his fiery body heat to wake her up, or exhaling warm air by her ear to make her giggle, laughing so much she’d playfully hit him because it tickled too much.
His hand slipped into his pocket and pulled out a satin jewelry box. Placing it by her pale, nearly translucent ear, he leaned down, suppressing the storm of emotions within him, his voice low and commanding:
"At this time, we should be on a plane to France. I’ve allowed you to delay things a little, but don’t be too lazy. Hurry up and get better, do you hear me?"
The person lying on the bed remained silent, like a doll devoid of life.
"Do you even realize how much effort we put into planning this wedding? If you wake up now, I’ll still forgive you. Don’t make me wait too long. My patience is limited."
Her graceful, lengthy eyelashes still remained shut as if disconnected from the world around her.
His Adam’s apple moved, his hand clutching the diamond ring box tightly, his curved fingers exerting so much force they turned pale blue.
"Boss." George’s voice softly came from the doorway, followed by the attending physician behind him: "The doctor has something to discuss with you."
Huo Zhenyang composed himself, straightened up from beside the bed, turned around, and restored his icy, composed expression as he fixed his gaze on the doctor.
The attending physician understood his sentiments well: "Mr. Huo, please rest assured, Miss Chu’s current condition is relatively stable. However..."
His gaze darkened instantly, drilling into the doctor: "Speak."
The attending physician glanced at the person on the bed and looked back at Huo Zhenyang: "During the recent injury assessment results, we discovered... Miss Chu is pregnant, five weeks along."
His deep eyes sparked briefly as if struck.
George froze in shock.
Miss Jiayi is pregnant—this news was undoubtedly a double blow for the Boss.
"...Rest assured, Mr. Huo, the fetus is not in critical condition. In fact, Miss Chu’s injuries are entirely concentrated on her upper body, primarily her head area. Based on our assessment, we suspect Miss Chu instinctively protected her abdomen to safeguard the baby during the car accident, which led to severe head trauma," the attending physician explained, his voice resonating.
The man before him stood like a lifeless, icy statue, silent.
The doctor heard the faint creak of his tightening joints, seemingly suppressing an overwhelming surge of emotion.
George quickly eyed the attending physician.
The physician understood and exited the outer area of the ICU, closing the door gently behind him.
After a long silence, Huo Zhenyang turned back to the bedside, crouched down, and fixed his gaze on her still-flat abdomen. His fingertips brushed over it gently, then tenderly clasped one of her slender, icy fingers.
She was carrying his child; she was nearly two months pregnant.
Over the past few days, she’d behaved like a little glutton, suddenly developing cravings for foods she normally didn’t like. Perhaps it was all because of her pregnancy.
And he had even teased her, refusing to let her indulge.
The child he had long yearned for came at such a moment.
This was the surprise she had mentioned over the phone. Something she wanted to share with him.
The two of them had not yet exchanged their surprises, but she was lying here now.
The child he had been longing for, the pregnancy he had been anticipating—did she risk her life to protect the baby because of this?
"Wake up and tell me yourself about our child. Tell Zaizai that he’s going to have a little brother."
He waited for her response.
There was no need for words, no need to turn over, no need to sit up—even just faintly grasping his fingertip, even the gentlest of movements would suffice.
One minute passed.
Three minutes.
Five minutes.
Until ten minutes passed, the person on the bed remained completely unresponsive.
"Alright. I’ll let you sleep in a little longer." Leaning down, his aching and icy lips brushed against her skin briefly, his voice filled with tenderness, though it masked a trembling emotion unknown to others.
George had no idea what to say—any words now seemed feeble and powerless. After a long pause, he finally heard the man before him speak: "Go to Disheng and retrieve some daily essentials. I’ll be staying at the hospital for the foreseeable future."

Three days later, Jiayi’s vital signs stabilized, and the critical period passed, but she still hadn’t woken up.
A week later, Jiayi was transferred out of the ICU to a general ward, but there was still no sign of consciousness.
In the afternoon, the atmosphere in the doctors’ meeting room was exceptionally tense.
The meeting room was filled with the best neurosurgeons and trauma specialists in the country, some of whom had been specially summoned nationwide on the second day after Jiayi’s accident.
After listening to the doctors’ results, Huo Zhenyang’s expression grew increasingly grim. Dark circles hung under his deep eyes as he slammed the meeting room door shut and returned to the ward.
George followed closely, watching the Boss walk toward the ward with an icy aura. By the time he stood before the ward door, he seemed like a completely different person—gingerly opening the door, stepping inside carefully, and softly closing it behind him, as if afraid of disturbing the person on the bed.
Over the past week, the Boss’s temper had become increasingly volatile. He would frequently yell or curse at his assistants and bodyguards. Even when Huo Tianpei called from G City to inquire about Jiayi’s condition, the Boss spoke gruffly and impatiently, hanging up on him multiple times.
But back in the ward, he had always been gentle—quiet and composed, making no noise at all.
These past few days, Miss Jiayi’s bathing and clothing changes had been handled solely by the Boss; he refused to let any caregiver assist. Even when Xia Tingxuan arrived daily to visit her daughter, the Boss would decline her help.
Above all, it was as though he was terrified that anyone else might inadvertently hurt Miss Jiayi again.
He trusted no one. It had to be him.
Chu Yanhan and Xia Tingxuan had just rushed to the hospital from home, visiting Jiayi as they had been over the past few days. They happened to see Huo Zhenyang coming out of the doctors’ office and returning to the ward. Unable to stop him in time, they anxiously approached George: "How was today’s consultation? Why hasn’t Jiayi woken up? Hasn’t the critical period already passed? When will she wake up?"
George glanced at Xia Tingxuan, whose red and swollen eyes betrayed her sleepless nights and exhaustion, and took a deep breath: "The doctors have advised the Boss to prepare himself mentally."
Xia Tingxuan’s hands and feet turned icy: "What do you mean ’prepare mentally?’"
