Chapter 41: Marked, Watched, Waiting

"One Month Later."

So many things had happened since the night Lilly had a heart-attack. Two people were found dead at Monroe Enterprises and Monique was seriously beaten up. After Ben and Marci told her what happened, she stayed by Monique’s side until she was released from the hospital. Monique now suffers with amnesia and can’t remember who attacked her.

The police department had been watching Monroe Enterprises to see if it was an isolated incident, but I had heard rumors that someone was possibly out to get Lilly. The girl Lauren, who was all over the news, had been linked to knowing Lilly. Rumor also had it that she paid for the girl’s funeral. I had seen her picture on the news and she was very attractive, so I was more than sure she probably worked for Lilly.

Monique’s ex boyfriend Darren had lost his job and wanted Monique to steal money from Lilly. He had been hiding in the parking garage awaiting to attack her that night. Security had rolled up, noticing that Monique hadn’t pulled out the garage by a certain time, so they went to check up on her. When they showed up, Darren shot and killed them, but what he didn’t know was that security had called the police, and they were able to get to Monique before he was able to kidnap her or worse, kill her. The police think her ex was working with someone, and when the police arrested him, he managed to escape from their custody. Everyone thinks it was a set up from the beginning.

Now let me tell you, none of this was making anyone in that call center sleep any better.

It had been weeks and Darren Stevens was still missing. Lilly had put everybody on full alert. Instead of the girls driving themselves, they had to take a taxi or get a driver. She wanted every call documented with time, date and location. We were even to text every so often to make sure we were okay.

She gave everyone watches that had a chip inside that would always have our location just in case police needed to be contacted. She had hired three retired police officers who kept a close eye on all our movements with clients. They were stationed at the call center and recorded our whereabouts. I felt safe on one hand and on the other violated, but she was just looking out for our safety, at least until they found out who was behind all of this drama. The other girls complained but did as they were told. We were only required to wear them if we were leaving.

Lilly’s doctor had suggested that she needed to get away from New Orleans. It was like bloody murder, no pun intended, to get her away. Her doctor demanded it. He told her she needed to get as far away from all the drama as possible before she ended up back in the hospital. She finally agreed after weeks of persuasion. I was surprised when she made Ben stay in New Orleans. He shortly left New Orleans and said he would be back soon. Ever since Lilly got out of the hospital, it seemed that their relationship was strained. I want you to know I had my own theories about that one, but I kept them to myself.

Lilly had decided to take Andrew, who was assistant butler to Harrison, Nicholas, a driver, a few of the maids and her personal assistant Fredricka from Monroe Enterprises, along with Monique. Although she had decided to go to England, she still would be keeping an eye out.

"Three months later."

I had received a phone call from Lilly to meet in Marci’s office. Since I didn’t seem to have a client list, I focused on school. I was more then sure she was going to fire me. How can a high paid call girl lose all her clients? I figured she had gotten the report and realized I was more of a burden than an asset.

I was right, she had looked at the call center’s contracts, calls and reservations. She had noticed that I hadn’t had any reservations or meetings. I finally had to breakdown and tell her what happened.

"What am I going to do with you, Cadence? You cannot put your emotions into this. You have to go in with a clear mind. If it is meant to be it will be. I did not recommend these men for you to take an emotional rollercoaster ride with them. I introduced you to them because I thought they were a good fit. I hope you weren’t expecting marriage from them, were you?"

"No, no, marriage is the farthest thing from my mind. I’m still young and I’m not ready to settle down," I said, sipping on my tea, listening to her through the speakerphone in Marci’s office.

Since Lilly had been gone, I had been going to see Dr. Patterson, a very well known psychiatrist in New Orleans. Marci had recommended her to me but I wasn’t sure if it was working or not.

"Good. As you are aware, Nicole and Angel are leaving. Nicole is moving back home to take care of her mother and Angel is going back to Las Vegas to perform with god knows who. They are required to turn in their client list and to break all ties. Their list will be available. They should be simple meetings, in and out. You meet them, perform and you leave. They have quite a few notables on their lists." Marci handed her the profile pages.

"Okay, you do know I will be starting my internship at University Medical Center in a few weeks," I said. Now let me tell you, I was excited when I received that internship. They only accepted two interns at a time and I was lucky to get the first spot. A guy named Stephen Richards got the other. More about him later.

I was grateful
