Chapter 24: Fearing Kalon

It wasn’t difficult sneaking into the room and finding a hiding space. The trouble was figuring out which room was theirs before they arrived.

Eventually, they managed, as Josinia recognised a coat hanging beside the wardrobe.

Once inside, the pair positioned themselves under the two single beds and waited.

Kalon’s heart was beating fast.

It started beating even faster once the door opened and the sound of two voices entered the room.

"That’s the worst fucking wine I’ve ever tasted," a man’s voice said aggressively.

"Oh, Father, be happy for once," a female voice followed.

"I am fucking happy. Why don’t you think I’m happy?"

"..."

"Maybe because of all the swearing you’re doing."

"..."

"Fuck off."

The bed he was hiding under creaked as a heavy weight sat on top of it.

It was Fitzgerald, who let out a deep sigh.

"Heh, at least we made it across the border with more money than we imagined. Betraying that maid fetched a healthy reward," the man said.

For a while, the woman didn’t respond. Eventually, she sat down on her own bed, which Josinia was hiding under.

"I felt bad... Did you see her face? She was crying the entire time."

"Feel bad? When my pockets are heavier than they’ve ever been?" Fitzgerald laughed. "I couldn’t give a fuck about a maid’s tears. She’s a criminal anyway. A traitor to the empire."

Afterwards, the pair continued talking about trivial matters.

Kalon felt his fists clench. The more the man spoke about betraying Josinia, the angrier he became.

He could imagine how Josinia felt hearing all of this.

It made him want to jump from his hiding spot and beat the man’s ass right there.

But he held himself back. He knew that he had to wait until the rest of the tavern had fallen asleep.

...

An hour later, it was finally time.

The walls of the tavern were thin, allowing him to hear that the chatter had died down in the other rooms and been replaced by snoring.

Not only that, but Fitzgerald and his daughter, Beatrice, were clearly asleep.

So Kalon rolled out from beneath the bed. Josinia did the same.

He looked around and saw his target lying in bed, still wearing his purple suit. He was fast asleep.

On the other bed lay Beatrice, dressed in a white buttoned shirt and no bottoms other than black panties that clung tightly to her generous, shiny purple lower half.

She too was fast asleep.

Josinia didn’t say anything and simply took up a position by the window, leaning against it.

Meanwhile, Kalon retrieved a small shortsword that rested beside Fitzgerald’s desk. It clearly belonged to the man.

Then he stood over the merchant and tapped the sword’s point gently against his forehead, just enough to wake him.

His pink eyes shot open, and he stared up at the man with a sword pointed at his head.

"Fitzgerald Whitewhisker."

That was all Kalon said.

Fitzgerald didn’t speak or move. All he did was examine the man’s face with wide eyes.

After a while, he managed to speak.

"H-Human... How..."

"Don’t worry about the logistics," Kalon said.

As he spoke, he heard Beatrice stirring awake in her own bed.

The woman rubbed the sleep from her eyes and glanced over, only to see the man holding a sword to her father’s head.

Kalon kept his composure, despite his heart beating harder than it ever had before.

He shot Beatrice a cold glance.

"Move, scream, and I’ll cut his head off."

Beatrice Whitewhisker shivered and suddenly seemed to become aware of how inappropriately she was dressed.

The top buttons of her shirt were undone, revealing a generous amount of purple cleavage.

She pulled the covers up to hide herself.

"Y-You’re a h-human..." Her voice trembled.

Just as Kalon was about to respond, his system spoke to him.

「Beatrice Whitewhisker +2.5 Seduction!」

﹂Stage One Seduction: 2.5%

Hm? She’s becoming seduced. Is this because of her degradation kink?

Strange...

Kalon had no interest in seducing the woman, but he did find the fact interesting. He was still severely unused to attracting women.

He ignored her words and turned his attention back to the merchant.

Slowly, he pressed the sword deeper into Fitzgerald’s forehead. The man winced as a drop of blood ran down his face.

It would decrease his health, but not enough to satisfy the system’s quest.

He still needed to do more.

Kalon nodded at Josinia.

"Do either of you remember her?"

The pair finally turned their attention to the maid leaning against the window, watching the entire ordeal and admiring how calmly Kalon was handling the situation.

She could never have imagined that this was the same man who got bullied on Earth.

When Fitzgerald laid eyes on her, he became visibly stunned.

"It’s... It’s you. This is what this is about? I swear, I didn’t mean to betray you! The Empire forced me to—"

"I heard you talking about the money you made..." Josinia cut him off.

Since she was nothing but a maid, she was still slightly frightened to stand up for herself. That was why she didn’t verbally abuse the merchant right there.

Yet her words still managed to leave him stumped.

"I... That was a misunderstanding. I was only trying to appear strong in front of my daughter!"

They all looked over at Beatrice.

The woman didn’t move or speak. She remained hidden beneath the covers, watching the ordeal in fear.

Kalon noticed that her body was trembling, and tears had started to form in her eyes.

However, this didn’t make Kalon feel bad at all. In fact, he figured out a way to make the situation even more beneficial for himself.

It was risky, but he believed it would pay off in many ways.

Not only that, but it was never wise to fight someone in their room, no matter what advantage you think you had.

You never know what sort of traps they could have set.

Kalon withdrew the sword from the man’s forehead, and Fitzgerald let out a sigh of relief.

The sigh came too early.

"Come outside," Kalon said calmly. "I want to fight you in a fair bout."
