Chapter 271: Chapter 271: Unhappy and Jealous

Adrian Lancaster hung up the phone. A stifled fire of frustration was still flaring up in his chest, making even his fingertips tingle with agitation.

He casually tossed his phone onto the soft sofa. The metal case made a soft thud against the fabric.

His brows knitted tightly together, forming a deep knot, and a low pressure seemed to hang in the air around him.

"What kind of nonsense is this? He was right there with you, but he still let you take a cab home alone. Some ’big brother’ he is, really living up to the title!"

Wren Sutton knew in her heart that no matter how angry Adrian Lancaster got, he would never bring himself to say a harsh word to her. All his anger was directed squarely at Sean Sterling.

But hearing him criticize Sean over and over, she couldn’t help but feel a little bad.

"Alright, stop going on about him."

"Isla wasn’t feeling well, so he had to stay and look after her. Besides, I was the one who insisted on taking a cab. He tried to stop me several times, but I didn’t listen. Before I left, he even said you’d definitely be angry when you found out."

"Well, he’s got some foresight," Adrian Lancaster snorted, his tone dripping with unconvinced defiance.

But Wren Sutton just kept defending Sean Sterling, causing that indescribable mix of awkwardness and sourness in his heart to surge even more fiercely.

He turned his head to glare at her, his eyes looking moist and wronged. His voice was laced with a childish, jealous dissatisfaction.

"Are you really taking his side like this? The way you tell it, he’s the considerate, thoughtful hero, and I’m the one being petty and unreasonable."

’This jealousy is completely baseless, almost irrational.’ Even he felt a hint of how childish and ridiculous he sounded after the words left his mouth.

But the words were already out, and he was too proud to back down. Adrian Lancaster simply turned his face away, his thin lips pressed into a hard, straight line. His expression clearly screamed, ’I’m not happy, and I’m not going to be reasonable.’

Looking at Adrian Lancaster’s stubborn and awkward demeanor, Wren Sutton felt both exasperated and amused.

She had planned to try and reason with him a little more, but seeing his completely obstinate posture—unwilling to listen to any persuasion—she decided not to waste her breath and got up to leave.

"Think whatever you want. I’ve explained everything I needed to. I’m going to go play with the kids for a bit."

Seeing that Wren Sutton was genuinely going to ignore him, Adrian Lancaster’s little fit of pique and stubbornness instantly vanished into thin air.

He hastily reached out and grabbed her wrist. The grip wasn’t heavy, but it held a dogged persistence, refusing to let go easily.

"Don’t go."

Wren Sutton turned back in confusion, her gaze meeting his dark eyes.

The man who had been so aggressive just a moment ago now had his eyes slightly downcast. His long lashes hid the emotion within, and all his forced, cold demeanor was gone, replaced by a rare look of grievance.

He was like a large dog being given the cold shoulder by its owner. He had started the tantrum himself, but now he was staring at his master, looking pitiful and helpless.

"..."

At his glance, the annoyance in Wren Sutton’s heart dissipated almost completely, melting into a helpless fondness that spread through her chest.

She sighed softly and, in the end, stopped walking.

"I know you’re worried about me, afraid something might happen to me on the road alone. I understand your intentions."

"Isla is your cousin’s girlfriend. She wasn’t feeling well today, so he came to pick her up. They have a lot to talk about, and it would have been awkward for me to be stuck in the middle. I didn’t want to be a third wheel and bother them."

"I’ve explained everything this clearly. Can you let it go now?"

Adrian Lancaster listened quietly. The gloom and intense jealousy in his eyes slowly faded, and his grip on her wrist unconsciously loosened.

He was silent for a moment before saying sullenly, "I can promise not to be angry with you."

Wren Sutton: "And you can’t be angry with him either."

Adrian Lancaster immediately looked up, his gaze firm, as if he had already worked out a little scheme.

"Then you have to agree to one condition. Only then will I forgive him."

Looking at his earnest expression, Wren Sutton had the strange feeling that she was placating a small child.

"What condition?"

The words came tumbling out of Adrian Lancaster’s mouth, his tone leaving no room for argument. "From now on, you’re not allowed to take a cab by yourself. No matter where you’re going or when you’re coming home, I have to be the one to pick you up and drop you off."

The word "childish" hovered on the tip of Wren Sutton’s tongue, but in the end, she didn’t say it.

"I promise."

The moment she finished speaking, Adrian Lancaster stepped forward and pulled Wren Sutton into his arms, resting his chin gently on the top of her head.

His warm breath brushed past her ear, his voice low and gentle, filled with reassurance.

"You gave me your word. No taking it back."

...

At dinnertime, light spilled onto the dining table where the family sat together. Steam wafted from the dishes, and the atmosphere was warm and happy.

Mrs. Sutton was ladling soup for everyone, the spoon clinking softly against the rim of a bowl. Still concerned about her daughter’s best friend, Isla Griffith, she looked up at Wren Sutton.

"Wren, dear, you said earlier today that Isla wasn’t doing too well. How is she now? Is everything okay?"

Wren Sutton slowly swallowed the food in her mouth, put down her chopsticks, and replied in a reassuring tone, "Don’t worry, Mom. She’s much better now."

After she spoke, she paused, as if considering how to phrase her next words.

The next second, her eyes curved into crescents, and a genuine, gentle smile that she couldn’t hide spread across her face.

"Dad, Mom, I have some good news. Isla’s pregnant, and with twins."

"Adrian Lancaster’s cousin, Sean Sterling, said they’re planning the wedding for before the end of the month."

"Twins?!"

Mrs. Sutton’s soup ladle paused mid-air. Her voice instinctively rose in pitch, her face lit up with surprise, and crow’s feet instantly crinkled at the corners of her eyes.

"Oh my, that’s wonderful news! It wasn’t long ago that you had your twins, and now your best friend is pregnant with twins too. What a coincidence, what a fate! This is just great, really great."

Beside her, Mr. Sutton also put down his chopsticks and nodded with a cheerful laugh, his face full of gratification.

"Excellent, excellent. Twins are a rare blessing. Wren, Isla is your best friend, and now she’s marrying into the Sterling family. You two will be sisters-in-law. It’s making a close bond even closer—a double blessing indeed."

Adrian Lancaster, sitting beside Wren Sutton, was gently and naturally placing her favorite foods on her plate.

When the word "twins" drifted into his ears, his chopsticks froze in mid-air.

His expression didn’t show any obvious change; he maintained his usual calm demeanor. But deep inside, a small, unexpected ripple had disturbed the waters of his heart, and it took a long time to settle.

’He really hadn’t expected that after all the twists and turns, Isla Griffith and Sean Sterling would actually make it to the point of getting married.’

What shocked him even more was that Sean Sterling was also going to have twins!

’The feeling was strangely... subtle.’

Adrian Lancaster had always felt, from the bottom of his heart, that having their boy-and-girl twins, Owen and Nina, was a precious piece of luck that belonged only to him and Wren Sutton—a profound bond that no one else could match.

It was the most special, most unique point of pride in his life.

But now, Sean Sterling was going to be just like him?!

Adrian Lancaster impassively retracted his chopsticks and glanced down at the food in his bowl. His fingertips tightened slightly as a secret, possessive little emotion stirred within him.

’From now on, when I send pictures and videos of the kids to Sean Sterling to show off, that guy probably won’t be envious anymore. He might even turn around and show off to me.’
