Chapter 270: Chapter 270: Adrian Lancaster’s Disappointment, Hurt, and Anger

The checkup at the OB-GYN was efficient and private.

With Wren Sutton by her side, Isla Griffith completed all the necessary tests.

After a short wait, the test results were all in.

The doctor, holding the report, informed Isla Griffith with a smile, "Ms. Griffith, I can confirm that you’re pregnant, and congratulations—it’s twins. Both gestational sacs are developing very well."

"..." Isla Griffith froze at the news, her hands instinctively moving to her still-flat abdomen.

Twins...

Shock, bewilderment, a secret sliver of joy, and an even heavier sense of worry all intertwined, leaving her momentarily speechless.

When Wren Sutton heard the word "twins," a gentle, happy smile flashed in her eyes. She gently put an arm around her best friend’s slightly trembling shoulders.

"Isla, did you hear? You’re having twins, too. Owen and Nina are going to have a little brother or sister."

A small smile touched Isla Griffith’s lips. "Yeah, Owen and Nina will have some company."

Before they left, the OB-GYN went over some precautions for the early stages of pregnancy and reminded Isla Griffith to come back to the hospital soon to set up her prenatal file.

Isla Griffith thanked the doctor and left with Wren Sutton.

As they walked out of the hospital building, dusk was already settling in.

Isla Griffith stood at the entrance, her hand tightly clutching the report—a flimsy piece of paper that felt heavier than a mountain.

She took a deep breath, pulled out her phone, and dialed Sean Sterling’s number.

The call was answered almost immediately, and Sean Sterling’s deep, pleasant voice came through. "Honey, I’m in a meeting, just a sec—"

Isla Griffith cut him off, her voice surprisingly calm. "Sean Sterling, I’m pregnant. I’m at the hospital entrance right now. I just finished the checkup. It’s twins."

The other end of the line fell dead silent, as if even his breathing had stopped.

A moment later, she heard the sound of a chair being shoved back violently, and Sean Sterling’s voice, now completely different, was almost a cracked shriek.

"Twins? Don’t move. Stay right where you are. I’m coming to get you right now. Tell me, which hospital are you at?"

Isla Griffith told him the address and then hung up.

Less than twenty minutes later, the screech of tires filled the air as Sean Sterling’s car fishtailed to a stop in front of the hospital building.

He didn’t even wait for the car to come to a complete stop before throwing the door open and rushing out. His suit jacket was haphazardly slung over his arm, his tie was crooked, and his face was a mask of incredulous ecstasy.

His gaze was like a laser, locking onto Isla Griffith in an instant. He crossed the distance to her in a few large strides.

"Honey, you’re really pregnant, right? You’re not joking with me."

Isla Griffith said nothing, simply holding out the report.

Sean Sterling snatched the report, his eyes frantically scanning the medical terms before finally landing on the conclusion confirming a viable twin pregnancy.

After a few seconds of stunned silence, an enormous wave of joy erupted like a volcano. He snapped his head up, his eyes shining with astonishing brightness, and suddenly swept Isla Griffith into his arms, spinning her around on the spot in his excitement.

"Twins! It’s really twins! I’m going to be a dad! Honey, you’re amazing! You’re having twins! I love you. I’ll love you forever."

Sean Sterling hugged the woman in his arms tightly, his voice high-pitched with excitement.

"You’re not getting away this time. You have to marry me. Right now. Immediately. We’re going to get our marriage license today, and we’ll have the wedding this month. I can’t wait until the end of the year."

Isla Griffith’s face flushed red at Sean Sterling’s sudden actions and blunt declaration. She flusteredly patted his shoulder.

"Put me down! We’re at the hospital entrance, and my best friend is still here."

As if waking from a dream, Sean Sterling carefully set Isla Griffith down, but his hands remained firmly around her waist, as if he were afraid she’d run away.

He turned to Wren Sutton, who was standing nearby, his face lit with an undisguised, almost goofy, brilliant smile.

"We’re all friends here. Wren won’t laugh at me."

"That guy, Adrian Lancaster, has been bragging to me every single day lately that he has a son and a daughter and is the happiest dad in the world."

"Now I can brag back at him! I’ll have a son and a daughter too! I’m a happy dad too!"

Isla Griffith rolled her eyes, speechless. "How do you know for sure it’s a boy and a girl?"

Sean Sterling stated with conviction, "It has to be. My intuition is always right."

Watching Sean Sterling’s rare but incredibly sincere loss of composure, Wren Sutton felt a sense of relief for her best friend.

Especially after he’d just said he wanted to take Isla Griffith to get their marriage license and have a wedding.

It was enough to show that he was willing to take responsibility for her friend and for the babies.

She smiled and nodded. "Sean, congratulations on becoming a dad."

"Isla needs to rest now. What you just did, picking her up and spinning her around, is too dangerous. You can’t be careless."

"Right, right. Look at me, I got carried away. My mistake. I absolutely won’t do anything dangerous again." Sean Sterling composed himself a little, but the joy in his eyes was practically overflowing.

He considerately helped Isla Griffith into the car.

"Honey, let’s go home. You’re my top priority now. I have to treat you even better."

"Starting tomorrow, I’m not going to the office. I’ll stay home with you every day, wait on you, until you give birth safely. Then, I’ll take care of you during your postpartum confinement and look after the babies."

Isla Griffith blurted out, "Are you copying Adrian Lancaster?"

Sean Sterling whispered in her ear, his voice low enough for only the two of them to hear, "Don’t worry, honey. I’ll definitely do a better job than Adrian Lancaster. Besides, my situation is different from his. He’s making up for his mistakes. I’m doing it purely out of love for my wife and kids."

Isla Griffith: "..."

Sean Sterling settled Isla Griffith in the passenger seat, carefully adjusting the seat angle and fastening her seatbelt.

After doing all that, he turned back to Wren Sutton and said, "Come with us. We’ll give you a ride home; it’s on the way."

Wren Sutton waved her hand, gently refusing. "No, thanks. I’ll just get a cab."

"How can you do that?" Sean Sterling firmly disagreed. "Adrian Lancaster will kill me if he finds out."

Isla Griffith also disagreed with Wren taking a cab and told her to get in the car.

Wren Sutton gave her best friend a reassuring and encouraging look.

"You two have a lot to talk about. I won’t be a third wheel."

Just as she finished speaking, a taxi happened to pass by. Wren Sutton quickly hailed it, pulled open the door, and got in.

By the time Sean Sterling and Isla Griffith realized what was happening, the taxi had already sped away.

...

The taxi stopped downstairs from the Sutton Family’s apartment. Wren Sutton paid the fare by scanning a QR code and got out of the car.

The voice-activated lights in the hallway flickered on, illuminating her solitary figure.

The key turned in the lock, and the door opened.

The aroma of food wafted out. In the kitchen, Mr. and Mrs. Sutton were cooking dinner.

In the living room, Adrian Lancaster was playing with Owen and Nina.

The two little ones were lying side by side in soft onesies, babbling as they interacted with their father, with occasional giggles mixed in.

The sound of the door opening startled Adrian Lancaster.

Adrian Lancaster turned his head. When he saw Wren Sutton in the entryway taking off her shoes, the smile on his face froze as if someone had hit a pause button. It then slowly faded, replaced by clear disappointment.

He immediately put down the rattle in his hand. His movements were a bit too large in his haste, startling Nina on the playmat. Her little mouth puckered, and she looked like she was about to cry.

Adrian quickly leaned back down to pat his daughter gently, but his gaze was already fixed eagerly on the doorway as he stood up.

He strode over. "Why did you come back by yourself? We agreed that I would pick you up when you were done."

As he spoke, Adrian Lancaster reached out to take Wren Sutton’s coat and bag. When his fingertips brushed against the back of her cool hand, his brow immediately furrowed with worry.

"Your hands are so cold. Let me warm them up for you."

His eyes searched her face carefully, as if trying to confirm something. The disappointment lingered deep in his eyes, making his gaze seem darker than usual.

Wren Sutton sat on the sofa and greeted Owen and Nina with a smile, calling out, "Hi, my babies."

"Mommy’s going to rest for a bit. I’ll hold you in a little while."

Then, she looked away from them and responded to Adrian Lancaster.

"I’m fine."

Adrian Lancaster held Wren Sutton’s hand, his voice dropping low, laced with the disappointment of a disrupted plan and a hint of almost imperceptible hurt.

"I was watching the clock the whole time, waiting for your call, ready to go pick you up. I didn’t expect you to come back on your own."

Wren Sutton understood Adrian Lancaster’s intentions, but she didn’t feel she had done anything wrong.

’It was just a cab ride. There’s no need to make a big deal out of it.’

"The situation was a bit unusual. It was just more convenient for me to get a cab."

"Where did you hail the cab?" Adrian Lancaster asked.

Wren Sutton replied, "The hospital."

"What about your friend, Isla Griffith?"

Wren Sutton: "Sean took her home."

A sudden anger flared in Adrian Lancaster. "Are you telling me Sean Sterling was there when you got in the cab?"

Just then, Wren Sutton suddenly remembered what Sean Sterling had said: "Adrian Lancaster will kill me."

She quickly explained, "Don’t misunderstand him. He’s a good guy. I was the one who insisted on taking a cab."

Adrian Lancaster couldn’t swallow his anger. Without another word, he pulled out his phone and dialed Sean Sterling’s number.

The call was answered quickly.

Before Sean Sterling could even speak, Adrian Lancaster erupted.

"Some ’big brother’ you are! My wife spent the whole day with Isla Griffith, and after everything was done, you two just let my wife take a cab home by herself?"

Sean Sterling knew this wasn’t over. "Let me explain."

"The world is a mess right now! There have been several cases recently of taxi drivers murdering and dismembering their passengers! I’m lucky my wife got home safe and sound. If even the slightest thing had happened to her today, Sean Sterling, I swear I would have killed you!"

Sean Sterling’s head ached. "Adrian Lancaster, can you be reasonable?"

"I don’t want to hear it." Adrian Lancaster angrily hung up the phone.

"I’ve never seen a ’big brother’ act like that."
