Chapter 101: Chapter 101: Is My Luck Value Skewed?
Not long ago, they were running from zombies, but now they were brazenly charging headfirst into the thickest hordes.
It was hard to say if Chloe Hughes and her group of "people" were in a hurry to fulfill their contract and leave, but in any case, they were even more zealous about killing zombies than Faye’s own five-person squad.
To be honest, with the addition of those six and over a dozen Mutant Beasts, their lethality didn’t just increase by a little—it was an insane boost.
Faye Yardley really only needed to provide long-range support with her Arm Crossbow. After all, as long as she didn’t initiate an attack, the zombies wouldn’t make her their primary target.
So she was truly just firing an occasional bolt from the sidelines, looking out for not only her four teammates but also Chloe Hughes’s group and the Mutant Beasts.
Kill. And kill. And kill.
Faye Yardley and her team would feel fatigue and take the chance to down a Physical Potion or an Energy Potion, but Chloe Hughes and her group seemed to be utterly tireless.
This made Faye Yardley a little uneasy.
’What are we going to do if we run into zombies this strong and tireless in the future? Would ordinary people even have a chance to survive?’
’No, wait, I’m overthinking it. The real question is, would *I* even have a chance?’
’And can they really go so long without eating?’
’What do they use to replenish their energy, then?’
These questions popped into her head one after another and refused to leave, but it didn’t stop her from playing her support role effectively.
Since this was a museum, even if the zombies had damaged many of the things inside, there were bound to be some items left.
Faye Yardley waited until they had killed most of the zombies and the tide of battle was unlikely to turn. Then, after calling out to her team, she slipped into the museum’s Cold Weapons Hall, which she had spotted earlier.
The inside was in complete chaos; not a single weapon seemed to be intact. Not all zombies were mindless creatures that only knew how to use their claws—some of the more developed ones had apparently tried to use weapons.
Faye Yardley wasn’t discouraged by the chaotic scene before her. ’If I feel like there’s something here, then there has to be!’
Following her intuition, she picked up a long spear and used it like a staff to rummage through a pile of broken debris.
"Huh?"
She crouched down and picked a glass bead from a pile of fragments. After casually rubbing it clean, she held it up to the light and whispered, "This is the fourth one."
She stored it in her backpack. ’I still haven’t figured out how to use these beads.’
She continued to rummage around, casually dispatching the few zombies that popped up. Then, in the corner between a pillar and a large display case, she suddenly spotted a flash of Silver light.
She walked back and forth a few times to make sure her eyes weren’t deceiving her.
She jabbed the spear toward the light and was met with the crisp clang of metal on metal.
It was wedged in tight. Faye Yardley circled the pillar several times, examining it. Finally, she leaped into the air, kicked off the wall for extra height, and pressed an inconspicuous button on the upper part of the pillar. With a CLICK and a CLACK, a section of the wall in the crevice slid open, revealing a Silver long spear covered in intricate dark patterns.
The moment her hand closed around the spear, a system notification sounded.
[You have obtained the Peerless Spear, forged by the ancient master craftsman of Planet Nocturne.]
A thought couldn’t help but surface in her mind: ’It’s probably not too late for me to switch to training with a spear, right?’
She tried to pull the spear out, but with a single tug, she found it wouldn’t even budge.
’Seriously? My Strength is already at 14, and I still can’t lift this spear? Is that even possible?’
In the end, she had to use all her might with both hands to barely pull the spear free, only for it to fall to the ground with a loud CLANG, kicking up a cloud of dust.
Her face flushed, Faye Yardley struggled to pick up the spear.
"Boss, are you alright?"
"I’m fine."
Gavin Donovan ran over to make sure she was unharmed before his attention fell on the Silver spear she was propping up with one hand. "Whoa, that’s so cool! You’re amazing, Boss."
"You try lifting it."
To her dismay, Faye Yardley discovered that the spear she had struggled so hard to lift felt as light as a feather in Gavin Donovan’s hands.
The moment he grasped the spear, his entire demeanor changed. With a single thrust, he dispatched a zombie that was trying to launch a sneak attack.
’So my luck just works to find weapons for my teammates, huh?’ Faye Yardley couldn’t help but wonder if her Luck Value was somehow miscalibrated.
After killing the zombie, Gavin Donovan brought the spear over and offered it to Faye Yardley. "Here you go, Boss."
"You use it for now."
"Thanks, Boss!" Gavin Donovan’s excitement was palpable. ’I’ll get to use it for as long as I can!’ This felt so much better in his hands than the standard-issue spear from before.
He felt like he could take on a whole horde of zombies by himself now, completely fearless.
Gavin Donovan shouted to Finn Ford, who had just reached the entrance of the hall, "Mr. Ford, you protect the Boss! I’m going to kill some zombies!"
Faye Yardley wanted to say that she was fine on her own; she wasn’t that fragile.
’Museums really are designed pretty much the same in every world,’ Faye mused. ’Every hall has an entrance and an exit.’ As she and Finn Ford left the Cold Weapons Hall and entered the Calligraphy and Painting Hall, they were surprised to find a cache of firearms prepared by the system.
The two of them quickly stored the items in their backpacks.
"Yardley, you take the rest. I’m out of space," Finn Ford said helplessly. His backpack still had too few slots.
"Okay."
While Faye Yardley was collecting the firearms, Finn Ford used a machine gun to mow down a few zombies that had burst in.
Just as they finished and were about to leave, the remains of a painting still hanging on the wall above them suddenly fell, nearly hitting Faye Yardley on the head.
"Yardley, are you okay?"
"It missed me." Faye Yardley touched the piece of the painting, and a fragment unexpectedly fell out from it.
The moment her finger touched it, a notification appeared: [Map Fragment: This is likely a fragment of a Treasure Map.]
"The second piece."
Faye Yardley and Finn Ford darted between the museum’s various halls, occasionally killing a few stray zombies that appeared, while outside, the others had gone on a killing spree.
After a while, Faye Yardley hadn’t found anything else of value, so the two of them went up to the museum’s rooftop. The traces of a pentagram were still there.
"Mr. Ford, provide some support below with explosives, and try to draw some of the zombies over here."
"Okay."
Faye Yardley herself began to trace the lines of the pentagram with her feet.
She murmured to herself, "That’s strange. Why does this look so familiar?"
BOOM—
BOOM—
The two massive, consecutive explosions drove the zombies into a frenzy.
They didn’t kill many, but they certainly caused a moment of chaos.
Gavin Donovan wielded the Silver spear with formidable power, and Zachary Pierce’s greatsword kept the zombies from daring to approach.
Faye Yardley crouched down and touched the inscribed lines. "Where have I seen this symbol before? That first time at the science museum, I was too far away to get a clear look. Is it a pentagram? It doesn’t quite look like one."
Lost in her own questions, Faye Yardley was now completely oblivious to the chaos below. She felt that figuring this out was extremely important, but the harder you try to remember something, the more it slips away.
「Outside the Dungeon」
Henry Lewis stared at the large fish speeding toward him, bracing himself for a fight. ’A fish this big should be enough for a few meals,’ he thought.
But as it neared the raft, the large fish came to an abrupt stop. It then reared up out of the water and opened its mouth. "Hey, young man," it said, "aren’t you going to invite this old one aboard for a rest?"
