Chapter 790: Chapter 775: A Lonely Boat (Part 3)
Wang Zhongyu and Wenquan Xin’s heated argument evidently made them forget that they were still trapped among the zombies. Although both were working hard to persuade the other to live longer than themselves, the growing commotion they caused only further provoked the desire of the zombies outside the vehicle to feed.
Wenquan Xin had lost his mind with heat, and was about to open the car door to step out in the next moment. Wang Zhongyu, sitting in the driver’s seat, clearly heard the footsteps coming from the container behind him.
He understood that Wenquan Xin wasn’t joking with him, and the thick iron sheet made it impossible for him to stop the other’s progress. All he could do was repeat his pleas and exhortations not to act foolishly, over and over.
The car window was being pounded with loud thuds, unmistakably the zombies were using their heads to strike it. The constant provocations and temptations from the food inside the vehicle were driving the zombie virus within their corpses to launch an even fiercer assault on this big chunk of iron in front of them.
The zombies were frantically pounding and striking the container truck, attacking wave after wave almost in a self-destructive manner.
The window was quickly stained with the blackish-yellow viscous filth that flowed from their broken skulls due to the impact.
Wang Zhongyu gave up trying to stop Wenquan Xin with shouts; he slowly closed his eyes, quietly waiting for that moment to come.
"Boom!" The expected sound of glass shattering wasn’t heard, but instead, a dull loud noise echoed once again. This time, Wang Zhongyu heard it clearly, and knew that it wasn’t caused by the zombies, but something had exploded.
Wenquan Xin woefully fell to the ground again, infuriatingly grabbed his hand-held radio and shouted: "Laughing Wang, you damn tell me right now, what the hell just happened?"
Wenquan Xin’s shout rekindled the life in Wang Zhongyu’s originally ashen heart. He picked up the hand-held radio and replied softly: "You keep it down, let me see the situation first, over!"
Putting down the hand-held radio, Wang Zhongyu took a deep breath, resigned to whatever fate came, he dropped his burden, and decisively lifted a corner of the sunshade, and glanced down.
"Oh!" Wang Zhongyu’s mouth was agape for a full half minute, unable to close.
He was not shocked by the dense tide of corpses before the vehicle, for he was long mentally prepared for that.
Nor was he lamenting the dirt staining the windows, he had also become immune to those; what truly startled him was the horrifying scene before him.
A few kilometers away from where his car was parked, the sky was illuminated by soaring flames, the intermittent explosion noises were not as forceful as the previous loud noise, yet still utterly shook the silent snowy night.
"Hey, Little Wang, for heaven’s sake, say something, what’s happening outside?" Wenquan Xin regretted not insisting on staying in the driver’s seat earlier; otherwise he wouldn’t be falling into the role of a blind man now.
Wenquan Xin’s urgent questioning pulled Wang Zhongyu out of his shock and back to reality. He quickly put down the curtain, composed himself, and said: "There’s been an explosion outside, that’s the situation, over!"
"Explosion!" Wenquan Xin exclaimed again, and Wang Zhongyu scolded him impatiently: "Can you stop yelling like that?"
"What’s there to be scared of, we’re damned anyway." Wenquan Xin took it easy, but still lowered his voice to obey and continued: "Doesn’t an explosion at this hour mean there might be survivors? Did you see any survivors?"
Indeed, Wenquan Xin’s words reminded Wang Zhongyu, explosions don’t happen without reason, only survivors might do such things, and could the abrupt appearance of zombies around the vehicle be related to this explosion?
Since he had been sleeping earlier, understanding the whole story seemed unrealistic now.
However, Wang Zhongyu stubbornly believed there must be some causal relation between the emergence of zombies and the sound of explosion.
If his deduction is correct, escaping by car might not be an impossible task.
With a glimmer of hope, Wang Zhongyu’s thoughts started to become exceptionally clear. He first advised Wenquan Xin to remain silent without making any noise, then sealed the exposed part of the sunshade completely with a blanket.
Next, he had to make a gamble, betting that the zombies would be drawn away by the series of explosions and flames, and the stake was his and Wenquan Xin’s lives.
Time was ticking by the second, but in Wang Zhongyu’s silent prayers, seconds had become as long as hours.
Fortunately, perseverance paid off, and his painstaking endurance was rewarded with a pleasant result. The frequent pounding and clawing noises gradually weakened, as the zombies, upon discovering no movement inside the car, began to be drawn to the distant explosion sounds.
With their tendency to follow blindly, the tide of corpses started moving, and Wang Zhongyu sitting inside the truck could distinctly feel the vehicle swaying due to the zombies’ movement. It was conceivable how staggering the number of zombies outside was.
Compared to Wang Zhongyu holding his breath, Wenquan Xin, inside the container, was rather restless.
With no way to know the situation outside, his tension was naturally understandable. As time passed on, with no latest news from Wang Zhongyu via the hand-held radio, Wenquan Xin even wondered if something had happened to him.
Of course, Wang Zhongyu was perfectly fine; not only was he fine, but he was also very excited. He had just riskily lifted the curtain again, and to his surprise, the zombies started moving out of the alley as he anticipated.
"Hey, Wenquan Xin, listen carefully to what I say next, don’t get agitated, stay calm, continue to make no noise. Over!"
Wenquan Xin had been on the verge of collapsing from waiting long enough, and upon hearing Wang Zhongyu still educating him at this critical moment, he appeared rather impatient and said: "I know, just tell me exactly what’s happening now! Over!"
"The zombies are retreating, we are saved! Over!"
Wang Zhongyu used an exceptionally concise ten words to deliver this great news via the hand-held radio to the bewildered Wenquan Xin.
"Nonsense," was Wenquan Xin’s immediate reaction. The zombies leaving without feasting on Wang Zhongyu and his delicious treats, he simply couldn’t believe the bull from Wang Zhongyu’s mouth. Apparently, Wang Zhongyu had already collapsed before him.
"Little Wang, don’t worry, I’ll get you out. Over!" Wenquan Xin picked up a knife with a determined look, now he intended to finish what he had been interrupted from doing earlier.
"Buzz!" Wang Zhongyu’s ears rang with a hum; Wenquan Xin’s idiocy, if he couldn’t prevent the latter’s reckless behavior, the hard-fought miracle would become meaningless.
"Wenquan Xin, don’t you dare act foolishly, if you listen closely, you should hear the explosions, right? The zombies are all attracted to that commotion now; if you want your buddy to live, just stay put exactly like you did earlier, don’t make any noise. As long as we withstand this period, once most of the zombies clear out of the alley, I can start the car and get out. So you better not do anything stupid; if you want to die, your buddy here hasn’t lived enough yet!" (To be continued.
