Chapter 473: Chapter 472: I Have No Reason to Bother Her Anymore (2)
Lost in his own world, he let the song play on repeat. It had been on for half an hour now...
"The path I walked with you, you can’t forget, because that was when I was happiest."
Leona Grant silently recited the lyrics, his eyes burning with unshed tears.
’He’s getting married, and she’s getting married too...’
’Starting today, she’ll belong completely to another man...’
Leona Grant gazed out the window with a melancholic expression. Many guests had arrived, but he had no intention of attending the wedding.
All he wanted was to share the same wedding anniversary as her.
’I wonder what Annabelle Linton is doing right now?’
’Have they exchanged rings yet?’
’Have they kissed?’
’Is she beautiful today?’
Countless questions flooded his mind, each one more heartbreaking than the last.
Leona Grant took some sleeping pills from the medicine cabinet, planning to sleep through it all.
’When I wake up, the wedding will be over. Annabelle Linton will be gone, and I will have missed my chance to make a scene.’
"KNOCK KNOCK—"
Leona Grant took out the pills and a glass of water. Just as he was about to swallow them, he heard the knock on the door.
He put the pills down, assuming it was someone coming to rush him. Frowning, he barked at the door, "Get out!"
However, the person outside didn’t leave. A kind, elderly voice said, "Leona, may Grandpa come in?"
’Grandpa?’
Leona Grant put the sleeping pills back in the medicine cabinet and opened the door. Sure enough, his grandfather was standing outside.
He lowered his head and apologized respectfully. "I’m sorry, Grandpa. I didn’t know it was you."
"It’s all right, it’s all right. No need for such formality between us." The old man laughed heartily. "May I come in and sit for a bit?"
"Please, come in."
His grandfather came in and sat on the sofa. The music was still playing, and Leona Grant quickly turned it off.
Leona Grant sat coolly on the opposite sofa and asked faintly, "Grandpa, is there something you need?"
"You’re not planning to attend the wedding."
His grandfather stated it as a fact, not a question, because Leona Grant hadn’t even changed his clothes.
Leona Grant lowered his gaze and nodded, not bothering to hide it. "That’s right."
"Then why did you agree to get married?" Patrick Grant looked at him, his tone consistently gentle. "Is it because of Annabelle?"
Leona Grant fell silent.
The old man watched him with a soft gaze and smiled. "Leona, can you tell Grandpa what your feelings for Annabelle are right now?"
"Possessiveness? A desire to conquer? A passing fancy? A crush?"
"Love."
Leona Grant looked at Patrick Grant seriously and uttered a single, firm word.
"Then why not go and crash the wedding?" Patrick Grant smiled. "I’ve watched you grow up, Leona. I know your personality better than anyone. If you set your sights on something, you’d destroy anyone who so much as touched it. So why is it that when it comes to Annabelle..."
The old man didn’t finish his sentence, but they both knew what he meant.
Leona Grant sighed, his face expressionless, and buried his head in his hands. In front of his grandfather, he finally let his mask drop.
He scrubbed his face hard, his eyes rimmed with red, and said, "Her happiness isn’t with me."
"Grandpa, Annabelle Linton doesn’t want me anymore. She’s marrying another man, and she’s going to leave this place forever. I can’t see any hope. I... she..."
At this point, Leona Grant couldn’t continue.
After a long while, he calmed himself down, taking a few deep breaths. Finally, Leona Grant summed it all up: "Grandpa, she was with me for over twenty years and never had a single good day. She never had the simple joys that other women take for granted. She’s so good... I’ve already completely ruined her happiness. I have no right to bother her anymore."
