Chapter 102: A Friend [1]
3rd Soltharion, 1353
A Day Before the Annual Sun Festival
"We need to clean up this entire area, but how did things even become this bad in the first place?" a young girl asked in a dangerous tone as she looked around the village.
"This territory falls under Marquis Brad’s jurisdiction, but I doubt even he knows the full extent of what is happening here," another voice replied.
"I will have to report this directly to His Majesty."
"Bella, didn’t you swear your loyalty to me?" the girl, Amara, asked while narrowing her eyes.
"Why are you still reporting everything to Father?"
"...Alright, Princess," Bella answered with considerable difficulty.
Even now, she was still shocked by the hidden side Amara had revealed.
Not only had the princess somehow managed to leave the Imperial Palace without anyone discovering it, but she also seemed to possess knowledge and awareness far beyond what someone her age should have.
Still, Bella had sworn absolute loyalty.
Whatever secrets the princess carried would remain buried with her.
Under the effects of Bella’s invisibility magic, the two moved through Tri-Mountain Village completely unnoticed.
"They have even intercepted and hidden the complaints sent by the villagers," Amara said, clenching her fists.
She had only been in the village for about an hour, yet she had already witnessed enough corruption and cruelty to make her blood boil.
"Bella, put everyone involved to sleep and arrest them."
"As you command."
Within the next five minutes, the village became unnaturally quiet.
One by one, guards, smugglers, and corrupt officials suddenly collapsed where they stood.
By the time Bella finished, hundreds of unconscious border guards had been gathered together and piled into a single location like a mountain of sleeping bodies.
Only then did Amara approach a modest house near the edge of the village.
After removing the invisibility spell, she knocked on the door three times.
"Father? Mother...?"
A cautious voice sounded from inside.
The door slowly opened, revealing a boy around her age.
The moment he realized the visitor was not his father, his expression changed completely.
His eyes became vigilant, and fear appeared on his face.
"W-Who are you?"
"There is no need to be afraid, your parents will be home soon." Amara replied gently.
Unfortunately, her reassurance achieved the opposite effect.
The boy became even more nervous as Amara sighed.
The border guards had recently discovered a mana stone mine and had begun forcing villagers to work inside it.
And some had never returned.
Others returned only to die from mana poisoning.
This boy’s father had been one of those victims.
After his death, the neighboring couple had adopted the boy as their own child.
’This is going to get messy...’ Amara thought as she attempted to step inside.
The moment she moved forward, the boy’s expression changed from fear to desperation.
He had already lost one family.
He refused to lose another.
’No... I can’t leave her alone...’
"HAAA—!" With a frightened scream, he lunged forward.
A knife flashed from behind his back.
Amara calmly caught his wrist before the blade could reach her.
Then she lightly struck the back of his neck as the boy immediately lost consciousness.
Catching him before he could hit the floor, she carried him inside.
"WAAAH!"
A baby’s crying echoed through the house.
Amara followed the sound and found a baby girl crying loudly inside a cradle.
After placing the unconscious boy nearby, she carefully picked up the child.
"There, there, don’t cry, little girl."
Almost immediately, the baby calmed down.
Instead, she stared curiously at Amara before grabbing a handful of her purple hair.
Some time later...
The boy slowly opened his eyes.
The first thing he saw was Amara sitting nearby while his little sister rested comfortably in her arms.
"Give her back..." he muttered weakly.
His thoughts were still chaotic and vision blurry.
At this moment, he genuinely believed his sister had been kidnapped by this stranger.
"Ehehehe!"
The baby’s cheerful laughter echoed through the room.
Only then did the boy begin to calm down.
"Don’t worry, I didn’t come here to hurt either of you." Amara said patiently.
"All the bad things happening in this village will disappear soon."
As she spoke, the baby continued pulling her cheeks with great enthusiasm.
"They should be arriving soon as well."
Right on cue, the front door opened.
A handsome man in his thirties entered alongside an equally beautiful woman.
Both appeared surprisingly relaxed.
"Maya? Jayden?"
The man immediately looked concerned.
"Are you two alright? Oh? We have a guest?" His gaze landed on Amara.
"I’ll prepare some refreshments," the woman said before heading toward the kitchen.
"Dad? Mom?"
Jayden looked between them and Amara.
"Then... was what she said true? Has the problem in the village really been solved?"
The man blinked in surprise.
"Oh? This young lady already told you?"
Then he looked more carefully at Amara.
"And for some reason, your face seems strangely familiar..."
Just then, Bella silently appeared behind Amara.
Despite maintaining a calm expression on the outside, Amara was feeling increasingly nervous.
The situation was developing in a direction she had not expected.
The man looked at Bella before giving a slight bow.
"Mysterious lady who solved our village’s problem, I wasn’t able to thank you properly earlier, so please allow me to do so now. Thank you."
"It is fine," Bella replied, dismissing the gratitude with a casual wave of her hand.
"This was simply my duty, and something that should have been done much sooner."
Seeing him bow toward them only made Amara feel even more uncomfortable.
"Please, sir, there is no need to bow," she said hurriedly.
"Also, if it is possible, could you allow us to stay here for the night? We will leave early tomorrow morning. I have already informed the authorities about the situation, but until they arrive, we need to remain here."
The man nodded without hesitation.
"Of course, and it seems Maya has already taken a liking to you."
He glanced at the baby girl, who was still happily clinging to Amara.
"Come, let me show you to your room."
’Princess, this is not what we discussed.’
Bella’s telepathic voice echoed inside Amara’s mind.
’You didn’t tell me that our plans had changed.’
Amara merely gave her a look.
A single glance was enough to end the conversation.
That evening, the two were treated as honored guests.
The mistress of the house even served them an expensive tea.
The peaceful atmosphere made it difficult to believe that the village had been drowning in corruption only hours ago.
Soon, night passed quietly and morning arrived.
