Chapter 17: Departure
"The first floor of the guild is for registration. The second to the eighth floors are training halls. The floors till 18th are where we keep the dungeon materials. The 19th and 20th floors have rifts, newly opened and those that are still not cleared yet. 21 to 25 are where hunters below S rank stay; those floors have recovery functions. Above them is where other S-rankers stay. As for me, I live at the top."
Aurora explained every floor in short detail, not leaving anything out.
"But why are you telling me all this?"
"No reason. I just didn’t want to stay quiet. Remember them well. Hunters here are always ready to leave when an emergency arrives. Everyone works in a team. Some go to the tower to clear more floors and increase their strength, while others clear the rift, and in the meantime, others take a rest. It keeps on going on like this."
"Is that the same for other guilds too?" Ethan asked.
"Yes. It’s easier this way. Being together is better than being alone; people die less that way. You should think of what I offered before. It might seem foolish that we are letting an unawakened guy into the forbidden zones, but no ideal person will ask to go to one of the forbidden zones just because they didn’t awaken mana. There has to be a reason for that, some new power, maybe, but a new ability doesn’t mean you won’t die, so think carefully, even if not for you, then for those that care about you."
Her voice turned deep and grave by the end. It was subtle, but Ethan picked that without a miss.
Reaching the top definitely meant she had seen a lot of people around her die. Some might say you get used to it at some point, but that will be a clear lie.
Every life matters, if not for you, then for someone else. And when someone close to you dies, it matters the most.
"You lost someone close to you?" Ethan asked in a soft tone.
He probably was the only one who could understand her at this moment.
Aurora, however, didn’t answer that. Her silence meant affirmation.
"There is something I have to get from there. It exists in the Abyss, so I have to go there. It’s not that I did not think about Eleanor before deciding to go there. I know how it feels when someone close to you dies in your arms. It breaks you down completely. Life won’t be the same after that. I know..."
He paused for a second, reminiscing once again.
"I know that, and that’s the very reason I have to go there. How will I protect what’s dear to me if I wait for a miracle to happen?"
Aurora didn’t say anything at all, not even showing any kind of emotion to Ethan. She continued to walk until both of them reached the 17th floor.
She used her palm to open the door.
"We keep swords on this floor. It consists of every sword that has been found inside the rifts and tower, as well as the ones crafted by our craftsmen. Take a look at which ones fit you."
Ethan looked around; he did not need to check them all.
Swords with mana won’t be helpful for him at all; they never did.
He easily sensed the mana coming from each sword.
There were some too powerful ones with dense mana.
If he tried to use them, he might not even be able to lift them. Mana makes it far too heavy for him to use any sword.
Those with low mana are light in comparison. None comes with no mana besides one. So till then, he will have to make do with these.
He went forward, looking at the old and rusty swords that did not seem unique or extraordinary.
They were bland, low-tier swords which felt as if they would break without being able to kill a single monster.
He picked one of those swords. It seemed light like a feather, but the weight it carried was completely different.
Ethan had to tighten his grip on the sword.
’A normal sword, and yet it feels as if I am holding a heavy long sword. Still, this is doable.’
"I will take these."
Aurora also came to his side and asked, "How do they feel?"
"Heavy."
"Really?" She took one of those swords to see for herself. "Feels light to me. Is it so different? If I hadn’t known, I would have called you a liar."
"I am taking all of these."
"Umm, I will have someone load it all in the plane. Wanna go say your goodbye?"
"No. I don’t think I will have the resolution to leave her again."
Aurora nodded her head in understanding.
"Go to the 20th floor and wait for me there."
