Chapter 545: Chapter 545

Watching Grace Sutton put down the vegetables she was holding, grab a hoe, and dash out the door in a flurry, Melody Summers shook her head with a helpless sigh.

She didn’t go join the commotion. Instead, she returned to her room alone and entered her space to pack and ship orders.

...

Ever since the torrential rains began, many people had moved from other flooded cities to seek refuge in Anworth. Among them were quite a few wealthy individuals, so business for The Arcadia Shop had gotten even better.

For the past two days, Melody Summers had been busy harvesting and shipping orders in her space. To save up 10 billion as soon as possible and unlock the "Animal Grand Gift Pack" from the Odyssey Station, she was giving it her all.

Yesterday, Melody Summers hadn’t slept a wink. She had stayed up all night in her space shipping orders and only came out at dawn.

Checking the time, she figured her family should be starting on breakfast. Melody Summers planned to go downstairs, have a bowl of congee, and then go back to sleep. But unexpectedly, as soon as she got downstairs, she saw an uninvited guest in the living room.

Roman Rhodes and Winnie Summers were sitting together on the sofa. They were very close, looking at the same phone screen and talking in low voices.

Melody Summers was a bit speechless at the sight. After a moment of silence, she walked over and greeted them, "...Officer Rhodes, what brings you here?"

Hearing her, Roman Rhodes looked up, the corners of his eyes and brows crinkling with an undisguised smile. "Oh, the medical center on the back hill is having its opening ceremony today," he replied. "I was on my way and came by to pick up your mother."

With that, he looked at Melody Summers again and said with a benevolent smile, "By the way, we’re all so familiar with each other now. You don’t have to call me Officer Rhodes anymore. You can call me Mr. Rhodes."

Melody Summers: "..."

Melody Summers let out a dry laugh. "You’re quite the joker, Officer Rhodes," she said, her face expressionless. "How could I possibly call you Mr. Rhodes?"

’First he wants me to call him ’Mr. Rhodes,’ what’s next? He’ll want me to call him ’Dad’?’

’Not a chance!’

Melody Summers’s expression was clearly not pleased. Roman Rhodes didn’t seem to mind and turned to Winnie Summers instead. "This kid sure gets up early. You can tell she’s very self-disciplined. Kids these days all love to sleep in; it’s rare to see one as disciplined as her."

Hearing this, Melody Summers let out another dry laugh and said with a smile that didn’t reach her eyes, "You’ve misunderstood, Officer Rhodes. I’m not disciplined at all. I was up all night playing games and haven’t slept a wink. I was just about to grab some breakfast and go back to sleep."

Roman Rhodes: "..."

’This damn kid!’

’Why can’t she just play along!’

At his side, Winnie Summers heard Melody and looked up, her face filled with worry. "You child, why are you staying up all night again! It’s not good for your health, I’ve told you before..."

"Alright, alright, I know!" Melody Summers interrupted Winnie Summers with a pleading look. She ran toward the dining room, calling back, "I’m going to eat! Mom, I hope your ceremony goes smoothly today!"

Breakfast today was a feast. Fresh vegetables just picked from the front yard and fish freshly caught from the pond in the backyard were minced together, seasoned into a filling, and made into bowls of fragrant little wontons.

The aroma whetted Melody Summers’s appetite, and she ate a heaping bowlful. Patting her round belly, she went upstairs happily to catch up on her sleep.

Unfortunately, her sleep wasn’t peaceful and was soon interrupted by a ringing phone.

"RING RING RING"

"RING RING RING"

Startled awake, Melody Summers groggily reached for her phone. Without even looking at the caller ID, she swiped to answer and asked in a voice thick with sleep, "...Hello? Who is this?"

The voice on the other end paused for a moment, then a clear, magnetic male voice came through. "May I ask if this is Miss Summers?"

Melody Summers replied, "...Yes, this is she."

After she spoke, a soft chuckle came from the other end of the line, followed by the man’s deliberately lowered voice. "Did I disturb your rest, Miss Summers? My apologies."

Melody Summers: "..."

’You can stop with the breathy voice now.’

The last bit of sleepiness in Melody Summers’s mind vanished instantly. She frowned slightly and asked, "Who is this, and what do you want?"

The man on the other end replied, "Miss Summers, my name is Carter Jennings. I wonder if you still remember me?"

Melody Summers searched her memory but found she had no impression of the name. Still, she pretended to remember. "Oh, it’s you... What can I do for you?"

Carter Jennings chuckled softly again. "Here’s the situation, Miss Summers. Today, two people tried to crash the medical center’s opening ceremony and cause a scene. They were detained by the security we had in place..."

"After questioning them, we discovered that they seem to have some connection to you. If it’s convenient, perhaps you could come over and see how you’d like to handle them."

’Causing a scene at the medical center’s opening ceremony?’ Melody Summers was completely bewildered.

’And they have a connection to me?’

’How is that possible?’

Confused, she thought for a moment before deciding to go see what was going on. "Alright, I’m on my way," she replied. "Where are you?"

Carter Jennings answered, "The security office at the medical center."

After hanging up, Melody Summers hastily threw on some clothes and rushed to the medical center.

The opening ceremony had just ended. As Melody Summers made her way over, she saw many heavily armed security personnel escorting a fleet of Hongqi cars away in an orderly fashion.

Melody Summers asked for directions and found her way to the security office. From there, a guard led her to a small room in the basement.

Under the bright lights, Carter Jennings was standing at the door to the room, surrounded by several security guards in black suits.

When he saw Melody Summers arrive, he smiled faintly. His gaze lingered for a moment on her face and body before he took the initiative to greet her. "Long time no see, Miss Summers. You’re as beautiful as ever!"

Seeing Carter Jennings’s face, Melody Summers finally remembered—he was the owner of the Nimbus Hotel. At a party at the hotel before, he had helped her get rid of Zara Walsh, who had been causing trouble for her.

She asked in surprise, "Long time no see, Mr. Jennings... What are you doing here?"

’Doesn’t the Jennings Family just run hotels? Why is he involved with a hospital?’

Hearing her question, Carter Jennings smiled and replied, "The elders in my family have always been very interested in the healthcare industry, so our family also invested in this medical center. I was in charge of security for today’s opening ceremony."

After speaking, Carter Jennings turned sideways, pointed a finger at two people inside the room, and said, "Just a little while ago, these two tried to force their way into the ceremony and cause a disturbance. They were spotted by security and stopped before they could get in."

"The guards handed them over to me. I was originally going to call the police and have them taken into custody, but then..."

Carter Jennings glanced at Melody Summers and continued, "...but then, they claimed to have a connection to you, Miss Summers. I was worried they might start spouting nonsense to the police, so I called you here to see how you would like to deal with them."

Melody Summers followed Carter Jennings’s gesture and looked. A man and a woman were tied up on the floor of the room.

They both looked to be in their fifties or sixties. The man, perhaps due to an illness, had a crooked mouth and a drooping eye, and he was drooling from the corner of his mouth. The woman was sallow and gaunt, her expression somewhat vacant.

Melody Summers frowned and stared for a long while. Both of them looked completely unfamiliar; she couldn’t remember ever seeing them before.

Just as she was about to say she didn’t know them, the woman’s eyes suddenly lit up as if she had seen a glimmer of hope. She called out excitedly, "...Melody? ...Daughter? Is that you?!"
