Chapter 544: Chapter 544

"6-702 The Lover: ...Just looking at this makes my skin crawl. How can anyone eat it?"

"2-1408 Bella Grant: @4-1009 Lowell On Deadline Oh my god!! BLECH!! Stop trying to gross me out!!"

"4-1009 Lowell On Deadline: What’s wrong? Did you guys not eat the Sandvine Worms and their eggs? Weren’t you all eating them happily before, saying they tasted like chicken?"

"4-1009 Lowell On Deadline: So what, Sandvine Worms are edible, but Parasitoid Wasps aren’t? Aren’t they both new species?"

"4-1209 Just Slacking: @4-1009 Lowell On Deadline Sandvine Worms are full of protein. Tricolor Parasitoid Wasps are full of some unknown brownish-yellow-green slime. How can you even compare them..."

"4-1009 Lowell On Deadline: @4-1209 Just Slacking Oh, I see... Sigh. It’s a shame they’re not edible. I was hoping for a change of pace."

"2-1408 Bella Grant: @4-1009 Lowell On Deadline Our meals have been great recently! We have mushrooms and wood ears boiled in salt water. Isn’t that good enough? Is there really a need to eat such disgusting bugs?"

"4-1009 Lowell On Deadline: @2-1408 Bella Grant It’s good, sure, but we’ve been eating these two things for a long time now. Aren’t you guys sick of them?"

"3-1007 Kiki, Mom of Two: @4-1009 Lowell On Deadline It’s not so bad. Mushrooms and wood ears are better than sand vine cakes, at least!"

"2-1408 Bella Grant: Exactly! At least mushrooms and wood ears are things normal humans are supposed to eat! The fact that we can eat normal human food means things are getting better. The apocalypse must be ending."

"4-1009 Lowell On Deadline: @2-1408 Bella Grant Look at these Tricolor Parasitoid Wasps swarming everywhere... Look at the rain that hasn’t stopped for months... Look at the refugees crammed into the hallways... How can you possibly think things are getting better..."

"2-1408 Bella Grant: @4-1009 Lowell On Deadline Why do you have to be so negative?"

"2-1908 Coco: @3-1007 Kiki, Mom of Two By the way, you just said the Tricolor Parasitoid Wasp was given to you by a refugee taking shelter at your place? Why do you have refugees taking shelter in your home?"

"3-1007 Kiki, Mom of Two: @2-1908 Coco Ugh, don’t even ask. We defaulted on our mortgage six months ago. We thought everyone was defaulting these days, so it would be fine if we did too. Who would’ve thought that when the floods came, all foreclosed homes would be required to take in refugees? Now my family regrets it more than anything!"

"4-2009 Nina: @3-1007 Kiki, Mom of Two Your family took in refugees? How many?"

"3-1007 Kiki, Mom of Two: @4-2009 Nina A lot of them! There are more than ten in the living room, five or six in the spare bedroom, and people are even living in the kitchen and storage room! Now my family of four is all crammed into one bedroom!"

"4-1009 Lowell On Deadline: @3-1007 Kiki, Mom of Two With so many people, isn’t it just total chaos every day?"

"3-1007 Kiki, Mom of Two: @4-1009 Lowell On Deadline Tell me about it. Just last night, one of the refugees came and knocked on our bedroom door. We told him we were asleep, but he insisted on coming in. We were so scared we almost called the police. Luckily, he didn’t dare force his way in."

"4-2009 Nina: @3-1007 Kiki, Mom of Two You’d better be careful! My neighbor also took in a bunch of refugees, and something happened yesterday!"

"3-1007 Kiki, Mom of Two: @4-2009 Nina Huh? What happened?"

"4-2009 Nina: @3-1007 Kiki, Mom of Two From what I’ve heard, a few of the refugees were up to no good. They saw that the family’s daughter was pretty and ganged up to try and assault her!"

"3-1007 Kiki, Mom of Two: @4-2009 Nina Oh my god! What happened then?!"

"4-2009 Nina: To protect their daughter, my neighbors, the husband and wife, fought back with kitchen knives. But they were outnumbered and couldn’t win. In the end, one of them was killed and the other was injured!"

"4-2009 Nina: Luckily the police arrived in time, otherwise... I’m afraid the whole family of three would have been lost!"

"3-1007 Kiki, Mom of Two: !!!"

"3-1007 Kiki, Mom of Two: Oh god! That’s terrifying! As someone with a daughter, I can’t bear to hear this!"

"4-1009 Lowell On Deadline: No wonder I thought I heard someone screaming for help last night. So something happened upstairs."

"2-1408 Bella Grant: Good heavens, something this major happened and property management didn’t send out a notice? This is too dangerous! @Property Management @Emergency Response Office."

"2-1908 Coco: @2-1408 Bella Grant They’re not going to announce something like this. It would cause panic."

"4-1209 Just Slacking: True. If word of this gets out and causes a scene, who would dare take in refugees anymore? What if the homeowners in the complex band together to resist taking them in? Where would they house so many people? That’s the last thing the government wants to see happen."

"3-1007 Kiki, Mom of Two: God, this is so hopeless... Are we just tools to maintain stability? I have a daughter too! What are we supposed to do!"

"4-1009 Lowell On Deadline: @3-1007 Kiki, Mom of Two Look on the bright side. It’s actually not so bad here in the residential buildings. The underground garage is even more terrifying!"

"4-1009 Lowell On Deadline: There are so many people down there that when trouble starts, even the police can’t control it. I heard people are dying every day. They’re always carrying bodies out!"

"2-1408 Bella Grant: ...That’s horrifying... Thank god we have our own places. We’re safer, for now."

"4-1009 Lowell On Deadline: It just occurred to me, right after the big freeze ended, there was this guy who sold his apartment in The Metropolis Residences to go back home and farm. I wonder how he’s doing now..."

"..."

Melody Summers was scrolling through the group chat when she was startled by a loud banging on the door.

Grace Sutton had just come back from the yard with a bunch of freshly picked vegetables, planning to cook something nice that evening to calm her nerves. Hearing the knocking, she turned and looked straight through the peephole.

When she saw who was outside, a blaze of anger ignited within her—

’It was that man and woman from before!’

’I can’t believe they came back so soon!’

Grace Sutton quickly stopped Melody Summers, who was about to go check on the situation. "Don’t go out there," she said. "It’s those two I was just telling you about! I can’t believe they have the nerve to come back! Watch me chase them off!"

Shouldering her hoe, Grace Sutton warned Melody Summers again, "Those two are wild-eyed and acting crazy. They’ve most likely been parasitized by those Tricolor Parasitoid Wasps! Don’t you dare go out there. Let me handle them. This time, I’ll beat them until they never dare to show their faces here again!"

’They dare to show up at our door again? Looks like they didn’t learn their lesson the first time!’
