Chapter 342: Chapter 322: The Pregnancy Quarantine Zone
Neal Wallace was led to a registration office to fill out a form. Anyone new to Argent Base who passed quarantine had to register. Those with superpowers were scouted by the major family factions, while ordinary people were assigned jobs based on their skills.
He watched as a heavy-set, fierce-looking middle-aged woman led Flora Bloom away, his mind elsewhere as he filled out the form. If Flora Bloom hadn’t told him to go on ahead into the base, get his bearings, and then meet up with Cynthia Grant without worrying about her, he would have gladly gone with her to suffer in the maternity quarantine zone.
’How could he not be worried?’ The maternity quarantine zone—to put it nicely—was for isolating pregnant women. But according to Gavin Todd, the man who had taken them to the quarantine room yesterday, even a perfectly healthy person would struggle to last three days in there, to say nothing of a pregnant woman.
"Hey! Are you going to fill that out properly or not? Do you really need to think that hard about whether you have a superpower? You either do or you don’t. What, you think if you take your time, you’ll suddenly get one?"
Neal Wallace paid the man’s attitude no mind. He quickly finished filling out the information card and handed it over.
The man glanced at the card. "Tch, just as I thought. A wimp with no superpower. Oh? A doctor, though. Not bad, not bad. You’ve got a future, kid!"
Neal Wallace gave the man a cold look. "Can I go now?"
"Not so fast, not so fast. There’s a great opportunity waiting for you! Not everyone in our base gets a chance like this!"
"What opportunity?"
"You’re new to Argent Base, so I’ll do you a favor and bring you up to speed on how things work. That way you won’t be stumbling around, completely clueless.
First off, Argent Base has five great families: the Adler family, who leads the fighting; the Grant family, who oversees medical care; the Thorne family, who handles research; the Todd family, who manages resource distribution; and the Wallace family, who’s in charge of networking and external affairs.
Before the apocalypse, these five families were the elite of Argent society, and now, the entire base’s livelihood is in their hands. Meeting me today... well, you’ve hit the jackpot. So, how about it? Want to join my team?"

The man lifted his chin arrogantly, his posture screaming that he was the best and it wasn’t up for debate.
"Your team? But I’m a doctor. Shouldn’t I be trying to join the Grant family first?"
"The Grant family? Kid, you’re aiming a little high, don’t you think? You think a commoner like you can just waltz in and join the Grant family whenever you please?
"My team might not be a major power, but we’ve got two Level 3 superpower users! A newcomer like you, an ordinary person with no backing, you’ll get pushed around easily! Besides, my team is backed by the Wallace family. The Wallaces are famous in Argent for their diplomatic skills. And even though the Grant family handles medicine, the Wallace family’s medical expertise is nothing to scoff at!"
At the mention of the Wallace family, Neal Wallace’s eyes darkened. "You mean Simon’s Wallace family?"
"Shh! You’ve got some nerve, kid! You can’t just throw the patriarch’s name around like that! Look, don’t mind that the Adler family is supposedly in charge. Their genius, Lex Adler, went out on a mission and hasn’t come back. No one knows if he’s dead or alive. Right now, it’s hard to say which of the five families is really the strongest. Besides, the Wallace family is a clan with a proper pedigree and deep roots. Even if we’re not as powerful as before the apocalypse, at least our reputation is better than the Adlers’!"
"I’m just saying, if this were ancient times, the Adlers would be traitors! The kind everyone would have the right to hunt down and kill, you get me?"
Hearing the man’s increasingly outrageous spiel, Neal Wallace immediately refused. "Never mind. I’ll just wait for an official assignment. Weren’t we told to wait in the civilian sector after registering, and someone would come assign us work?"
Seeing Neal Wallace brush him off, the man hurried to grab him again. "Hey, wait! Why won’t you listen to reason? I’m telling you, that civilian sector is no picnic."
Neal Wallace strode toward the open back door of the police station, leaving the man, still chattering about the benefits of his team, in his wake.
"Hey! If you join my team, the daily food rations are better than in the civilian sector! People there have to trade hard labor for every meal. Just look at your scrawny frame..."
The man’s voice faded into the distance. Neal Wallace only breathed a sigh of relief after he had left the police station. Finally, some peace and quiet.
This part of Argent Base didn’t seem all that different from before the apocalypse. The streets were the same, the houses were the same. The only difference was the lack of sincerity between people. Everyone was guarded, wary of one another.
