Chapter 334: Chapter 318: Departing for Argent

It wasn’t that they were overstaying their welcome; Flora Bloom had asked them to stay. She had something to discuss with everyone.

"I’m going to Argent."

Just one sentence, and everyone in the villa fell silent. Even Luna, The Crown Prince, and Raccoon, who had been cloaked outside the villa, revealed themselves and entered.

Argent Base.

The highways were in ruins, the streets a panorama of devastation. As far as the eye could see, what were once towering skyscrapers had been leveled. A colossal fissure split the ground, as if something enormous had pushed up from below, tearing the earth open from the inside out.

A metropolis of over ten thousand square kilometers, originally comprising fourteen districts. In the space of two short months, eleven of those districts had been reduced to rubble. The city center had become Argent’s largest zombie playground.

The remaining three suburban districts, through the efforts of a group of Argent’s superpower users, were merged. They erected sturdy, high outer walls in the shortest possible time and rapidly repaired the infrastructure within—water, power, and even some of the network communications.

It was hard to imagine that a city of over 10,000 square kilometers had been reduced to a mere few hundred. But through the united efforts of its people, this area was transformed and developed into what was now the Argent Secure Base.

The Argent Base now relied on five great families to maintain its security and provide for its people.

There was the Todd family, responsible for resource allocation and management; the Grant family, in charge of the base’s sanitation and medical care; the Thorne family, overseeing all research projects; the Wallace family, which handled communications and liaison with other bases; and finally, the head of the five families, the Adler family, which commanded the majority of Argent Base’s superpower users and led the external combat forces!

As the most resilient higher beings, humans were incredibly fast at adapting to new environments.

After Argent lost two-thirds of its population, the survivors not only tenaciously clung to life, but some even awakened superpowers. So, after the initial panic and chaos brought by the apocalypse, people began to fight back and reflect.

Threatened by the zombies, people’s dormant warlike instincts were ignited. They began to form teams and hunt down the monsters their former kin had become.

After awakening, the superpower users quickly figured out how to strengthen themselves in the shortest time possible. Moreover, a professor from the agricultural university, who had been attending a conference in Argent before the apocalypse, survived. A month ago, he began researching the elemental composition of the post-apocalyptic soil.

Besides him, professors and doctors from various fields of biology also began studying the apocalyptic virus. At first, they hoped to find a cure for the zombie virus. But after countless failed attempts, they shifted their focus to researching a superpower-awakening serum.

One group researched cultivation, while the other researched superpower awakening. Of the two, only the agricultural professor’s research received everyone’s full support. Food resources outside the base were nearly depleted, and with food being the staff of life, everyone longed for fresh vegetables and fruits in the post-apocalyptic world.

However, researching superpower awakening required superpower users to contribute their own blood or cell tissue for the researchers to analyze.

’What if my body has some special substance different from other superpower users? I could get captured and dissected in a lab.’

People wanted to survive, but they weren’t willing to gamble their lives on research with an uncertain outcome.

Initially, some idealistic superpower users voluntarily contributed their blood and cell tissue. But later, when rumors of disappearing superpower users spread through the base, everyone grew paranoid. The families of the missing wailed day and night outside the research building to no avail. To this day, the disappearances remain an unsolved mystery.

The superpower-awakening lab claimed it had never forced anyone to contribute their cellular material, but the people were undeniably gone.

Over time, the superpower-awakening lab fell into disuse. The few remaining professor-level researchers were labeled as peace-disrupting, anti-human elements by the base’s populace, and their lives became harder than those of ordinary civilians.

After the apocalypse, the Adler family, relying on their large number of subordinates, quickly became the dominant power in the base. Before the apocalypse, these subordinates had undergone relentless, top-tier physical and specialized training. Their physical conditioning and adaptability were second to none. This led to most of them awakening superpowers after the apocalypse, allowing the Adler family to not only rapidly establish a foothold in Argent Base but also use their combat experience to repel the initial zombie waves.

This, in turn, gave the base the breathing room it needed to develop and build.

Everyone in the base, without exception, looked to the Adler family for leadership. Under the Adler family’s planning and guidance, the secure base established various written regulations and laws.

......

The Crown Prince and Raccoon were in the cockpit, piloting the plane toward Argent Base.

On this trip to Argent, aside from The Crown Prince and Raccoon, Flora Bloom only brought Cynthia Grant, Neal Wallace, and Shauna Wallace. Too many people would make them too big a target and hinder their movements.

According to The Crown Prince and Raccoon, Argent Base’s walls were tall, thick, and formidable, and its facilities were fully equipped, not much different from before the apocalypse. Moreover, the superpower users inside the base were formidable. Most of them had special operations experience from their past lives, making them incomparable to ordinary people who had simply awakened superpowers.

The Adler family held an extraordinary dominant position in Argent, both before and after the apocalypse.

"Ma’am, you should all come straight with us to the Boss’s place in Argent. Let’s get you settled in before we look for him!"

Flora Bloom shook her head. "We don’t know what the situation in Argent Base is right now. Lex Cross wouldn’t just lose contact for no reason; I’m afraid something’s happened. You two go back on your own. Just drop us off somewhere safe outside the base."

"But, Ma’am, the terrain outside Argent is complex and extremely dangerous. We can’t..."

Flora Bloom’s expression was impassive. "If you want to find your boss quickly, you’ll listen to me." Flora Bloom sighed internally. ’Sometimes, going into a base openly to find someone gets you noticed by the wrong people, and a lot of useful information can be erased.’

’On the other hand, if we enter the base as ordinary strangers, we might be able to gather more useful intel.’

The plane landed in a flat clearing in the suburbs of Argent. Everyone disembarked. The Crown Prince and Raccoon marked the base’s location on the tablet in Flora Bloom’s hand, and then the two of them vanished.

They hadn’t actually left, but were standing guard invisibly around Flora Bloom and the other three.

Flora Bloom knew the two wouldn’t leave so easily, so she explained, "If you two show up in the base after I’ve arrived, it will inevitably make people suspicious of our connection. Go back first. We’ll be there soon."

The Crown Prince and Raccoon sighed, and this time, they truly left.

Flora Bloom hadn’t let the two of them fly the plane to the landing pad inside the base. This plane still needed to carry them all back to Morhaven later, so it couldn’t be compromised. She had to ensure the plane remained available until they found Lex Cross.

So, Flora Bloom stored the plane in her dimensional space, placing it in a valley behind the mountain range.

Her most important family members were in the Morhaven Secure Base, so she had left most of the evolved creatures from her dimensional space back there.
