Madam Xiao rushed over when she saw that Xiao Yunze was talking with Han Ruochen. As a mother, how could she not see what was going on in Xiao Yunze’s mind? She immediately dropped what she was doing and rushed to stop her son.
"Yunze, come with me."
Xiao Yunze was surprised when he saw his mother rushing over; he did not know what was going on, but he was used to following his mother and nodded before following her home. Once the two of them were inside the courtyard, Madam Xiao closed the door of the house and turned to look at her son sternly. "You...what were you doing just now?"
Xiao Yunze frowned when he heard the question of his mother. Did his mother drag him home because she wanted to ask him what he was doing? Though he was a bit bewildered, he still replied honestly, "Mom, Jianyou’s school called and asked his guardian to come to the school. I wanted to look for Uncle Yichen, but I ran into Ruochen, so I told her about the issue. "What’s the matter?"
"What’s the matter?" Madam Xiao’s expression darkened as she raised her hand and slapped her son lightly on the back of his head. "Yunze, you are grown up, and I don’t want to interfere too much with your matters, but I am telling you, you are not allowed to get entangled with someone like Han Ruochen!"
When Xiao Yunze heard his mother’s response, he could not help but frown hard. He looked at her and asked, "Why?"
"Why?" Madam Xiao sneered as she raised her hand and slapped her son on the back again. In the past, her son was innocent and naive. He would listen to everything that she said and never questioned her back. Now, for the first time he dared to question her, how could she not realise what her son was thinking? She snorted and said, "Because I don’t want a restless in-law like Meng Yunhan! It’s bad enough that woman has caused so much trouble in the village, but I also heard that she had spent all the savings of the Han family. Now the Han family is nothing less than a shell. How can they even afford a dowry for Han Ruochen?"
"And with their savings depleted, Meng Yunhan will certainly try to get some of it back by selling her daughters off. I shudder to think what kind of bride price she will set if we arrange a marriage with her family. And that’s not all, Meng Yunhan is a restless woman. What if she clings to our family and tries to suck our blood dry through her daughter? I would rather not see that happen! So you better drop that idea as well."
She then curled her lips and continued, "In the past, I might have agreed, as Han Ruochen had a permanent job, but now? She is nothing but a lowly fisherwoman. She has no land and no dowry; we don’t want a woman like her as our daughter-in-law."
Pah! So what if Han Ruochen was beautiful? In the end, she was a shameless hussy who did not have anything under her name. If she were a good woman, she would have tried to avoid suspicion just now, but she stood where she was and shamelessly talked with her son. Was it not because she wanted everyone in the village to see that she was close to her son? However, she was not a fool. As long as she was here, Han Ruochen could forget about entering her house. She would never let that woman cross the threshold of her house.
The more Xiao Yunze listened, the more speechless he became. A helpless expression came onto his face. "Mom, what nonsense are you spouting? Miss Han and I just talked for a while. There is nothing between the two of us. What are you even talking about? The two of us have never even met before. I just relayed a message to her; how can you say so many things against her? Be careful and don’t say anything outside, or else you will ruin the reputation of a fairly good woman for no reason."
Xiao Yunze could not help but feel slightly dissatisfied when he heard his mother’s quibbling. He admitted that he did feel something for Han Ruochen, but it was not to the point where his mother started to plan his marriage. He just admired her. Just like his mother, he too had heard a lot about the pit that Meng Yunhan had dug for the Han family. If he were in Han Ruochen’s position, he would have long given up, but the woman was still trying and working hard. This alone proved that Han Ruochen was a woman of substance, but who would have thought that just a little thing would end up resulting in his mother’s thoughts running wild?
"Look at you!" Madam Xiao did not think that she was wrong; instead, she thought that her son was bewitched by Han Ruochen. "I just said a few words, and you started to talk back to me. You still dare to say that you feel nothing for that woman? Yunze, you better listen to me carefully! You are not allowed to get close to Han Ruochen. Do you understand? If you dare to get close to her, I will hang myself from the beam for you to see!"
Madam Xiao was worried that Xiao Yunze would go against her and immediately threatened him. She wanted to nip the bud before it bloomed, or else there would be trouble in the future.
"Alright, alright, I got it!" Xiao Yunze started to have a headache. He had just talked with Han Ruochen; how come the matter ended up escalating to his mother hanging herself?
When Madam Xiao saw that her son had agreed, she heaved a sigh of relief. But in her heart, she was still dissatisfied. She decided that she was going to look for Han Ruochen in a few days and warn that shameless woman. She could never allow the daughter of a woman like Meng Yunhan to be married into her family. Just because many years had passed and everyone had forgotten what happened back then did not mean that she had forgotten as well.
She still remembered the good things that Meng Yunhan did before she married Han Yichen.
The daughter of such a woman...how could she be any good?
