Chapter 170: Won’t Be lucky all the time
Aunt Gossip’s eyes were almost popping out of her sockets as she looked at the conches that Han Ruochen had collected. "I knew that you were lucky, but I never thought that you were this lucky." As she spoke, she couldn’t help but rub her hands on Han Ruochen’s clothes. In the past, she used to save face, but now she no longer wanted to do that. As long as she could get her hands on some of Han Ruochen’s luck, did it matter how she got it?
When Han Ruochen saw her actions, she did not know whether to laugh or cry. She simply came to catch some seafood, but why was she being treated like a lucky idol again?
Han Ruochen let the woman do what she wanted and then said to her, "Aunt, we are done scouting the area. If you want, then you can look around." She had left two conches on the shore; if Aunt Gossip was lucky, then she would be able to find them. After all, Han Ruochen was not a hoarder who wanted to keep all the good things for herself.
Anyway, one of her buckets was almost full of conches, so there was no need to hoard everything.
Tong Zhaodi was quite excited after finding so many conches. "Sister Ruochen, this is good. Look, I did not make a mistake when I was digging and found five conches in the spot that you told me."
Han Ruochen was also happy, as conches were considered rather valuable seafood.
She could sell these to the state-run restaurant for a good sum of money.
It seemed like this trip was not in vain. She then took Tong Zhaodi to another mudflat. As soon as they arrived at the mudflat, Tong Zhaodi looked at the bubbling mud and turned to look at Han Ruochen before asking, "Sister, are we going to dig for crabs?"
"Just look for anything that you can catch," she did not want to make Tong Zhaodi follow her and waste her time earning money for her. As long as she caught something on her own, she would let the woman sell it.
Tong Zhaodi also understood Han Ruochen’s meaning, and her eyes turned red with emotion. Honestly, even her own family did not care about her and yet Han Ruochen seemed to be taking special care of her. This was the first time someone had cared for her as if she were worthy of showing comfort and care.
Han Ruochen did not know that in such a short time, Tong Zhaodi had thought so many things. She turned her attention to the sea scanning system and looked around the mudflat. When she realised that the thing that she had been looking for was long gone, she couldn’t help but sigh. However, just as she was about to turn the system off, her eyes fell on the tail of that very thing that she had been waiting to catch. Her eyes turned bright, and she immediately said to Tong Zhaodi, "Come with me. If you help me catch this thing, I will hand you another hundred yuan."
Han Ruochen rushed to the spot where she saw the tail of the thing and hurriedly said to Tong Zhaodi, "Come and dig here."
Tong Zhaodi immediately started digging together with Han Ruochen.
Although Tong Zhaodi did not understand why Han Ruochen was so excited, she did not waste any time and used all her strength to dig as much soil as possible with each shove. Maybe the two of them were creating a loud ruckus, but a lot of villagers started to surround them.
The two of them dug a very big hole but nothing appeared on the surface.
Aunt Gossip, who had followed Han Ruochen, couldn’t help but frown. She looked at the sight of the big hole that had been dug by the two of them and couldn’t help but say, "What are they doing? Did they find something big?"
"Humph, you seemed to be hoping for too much." Widow Wang rolled her eyes and sneered. "Just because she was lucky a few times, do you think that she would be lucky all the time? I say, she is quite foolish. She clearly had a job, but she sold it and is now wasting her time digging in mud."
"Who says that she is wasting her time? Have you forgotten that Han Ruochen had bought a motorboat? " Aunt Gossip fired back. It was not that she was speaking up for Han Ruochen, but she simply disliked Widow Wang. This woman was clearly a vixen who liked to seduce men left and right. Even her husband was not left alone the last time; when her husband walked past Widow Wang’s house, this woman clearly tried to pull him inside her house. Don’t think that she had forgotten all of that!
Widow Wang’s face turned pale indeed; she had forgotten about Han Ruochen buying a motorboat. She was just used to admonishing women who were doing better than her; thus, she forgot this small piece of information. She pursed her lips and angrily huffed. She wanted to say something, but was worried that she would be scolded by Aunt Gossip again, so she turned silent.
This little incident did nothing to Han Ruochen. She calmly continued to dig through the soil. She could, of course, hear the villagers calling her a fool for letting go of her well-earning job, but she did not think so. She knew that her decision was ultimately right. After all, if she had not sold her job, then her mother would have never let go of her. For someone who spent her life tied to a pole like a dog, these people had no idea how much this freedom and peace meant to Han Ruochen.
She exhaled heavily and scooped another scoop of soil before stopping and as soon as she stopped Tong Zhaodi also stopped and looked down in the pit that they had dug.
