Chapter 166: He Had No Hope
His own children did not have enough clothes to wear, but his adopted daughter never had enough of them. After realising this one thing, even if he wanted to turn a blind eye, it was not possible. Han Yichen realised that Han Ziyan had been using Meng Yunhan and his guilt toward her as leverage. She was living a life that was only fit for a young mistress by making his own children suffer!
Previously, Meng Yunhan said to him that a set of clothes could last for eight or nine years; that was why she was not giving any money to Han Ruochen or Han Jianyou. However, her actions were contrary to her words when it came to Han Ziyan.
Han Yichen no longer wanted to be treated as a fool. He had done an estimation of how much Meng Yunhan earned and knew that while she indeed did not earn as much as he, she had enough money to save for Han Ziyan’s dowry and a set of clothes per season. As long as she managed her money properly, she would be able to give a substantial dowry to Han Ziyan and even raise her for a few more years. Anyway, he had done his job by taking care of the girl till now.
If Meng Yunhan thought that she could easily eat the piece of pie without doing anything, then she needed to think twice!
"This – how can this be done? How can you not give her any dowry?" Meng Yunhan was furious. She was so angry that she was shaking all over. How could her precious Ziyan not receive a penny from Han Yichen? She knew her abilities. Even if she worked hard for two or three years, she could at most give Han Ziyan two or three hundred yuan as dowry, which should be enough in the county.
But Meng Yunhan did not want her daughter to be married in the county; she wanted her to be married in the big city!
For that, she needed more than three hundred yuan.
Just like Han Yichen, she had done her own calculations. Even if Han Yichen had lost all of his savings, he was quite a capable man. It wouldn’t take long for him to recover most of his savings. And if he didn’t use that saving on Han Ziyan, then the one who would ultimately benefit from it would be Han Ruochen. How could this be done? Was this woman even worthy of marrying a city dweller?
"Because I have no money! Anyway, I am not the only family she has. If Ziyan were to get married, I don’t believe that your maternal family would ignore her and not pay attention to her. After all, you have given so much money to them, haven’t you? The least they could do is to let your precious be married with a big hoo-hah!" Han Yichen sneered.
He had been scolded to death by his mother over this matter.
Ten thousand yuan of savings was lost right under his nose, and even his daughter was bullied by his adopted daughter, causing her to lose her betrothal as well as her job. Han Ruochen was the one who got the job with her own hard work and talent; why did she have to be the one to give up? In the end, it all came down to him. Her father, who couldn’t even protect his own daughter.
"You! Old Han, you are being unreasonable!" Meng Yunhan was simply speechless. She was dumbfounded with anger coursing in her veins, but she couldn’t say a thing to Han Yichen because nothing came to her mind!
"Humph, you can say whatever you want, but in the end, righteousness will see through all the lies. Where am I being unreasonable? You tell me." Han Yichen was also furious. The one who was being unreasonable was his wife, and yet she was blaming him. How was it alright for her to do that?
Seeing that the quarrel was escalating, Han Ruochen took Han Beijiang to her room. She had long adapted the attitude of not getting involved and not watching either. In the past, she foolishly listened to Han Ziyan’s instigating and even intervened between her parents, but not anymore.
"Look! Look! You treat her so well, and she does not even care. We are quarrelling because of her, and she went to her room without a care. She is a heartless thing, and you are wasting your money on her by letting her buy clothes for herself." Meng Yunhan pointed at the stairs and yelled at the top of her voice.
She deliberately said those words for Han Ruochen to hear. She wanted her to come out and even mitigate the quarrel between her and Han Yichen. But all she received was silence. Seeing this, Meng Yunhan was even angrier. Since when had this woman turned so rebellious!
"What do you mean? What Ruochen is doing is the right thing. We both are quarrelling, and she is not our elder; how can she say anything to us?" Han Yichen was both amused and angry.
In his mind, what Han Ruochen did was the correct thing. If Han Ruochen spoke up for him, then she would be unfilial to Meng Yunhan, and if she helped Meng Yunhan in persuading him, then she would be a fool who could not differentiate wrong from right.
"Alright! To you, whatever Han Ruochen does is always right and whatever I do is wrong. How can you ignore Ziyan for her?? Don’t forget that even if Ziyan did something wrong, she is still our adopted daughter. Do you want others to say that we are bullying her because she is an adopted daughter?" Meng Yunhan was anxious when she realised that she couldn’t make Han Yichen spend his money on Han Ziyan.
Her daughter had suffered so much injustice already; why should she suffer even more?
"Utter nonsense!" gasped Han Yichen. "The entire village has seen how I treated Ziyan. I have done nothing wrong to let her down. If anything, she is the one who has developed all sorts of ideas. Anyway, you can say whatever you want, but I will not give you any money. You’d better save properly from now on, and don’t come to look for me if you cannot save enough money for her dowry. Because I will not fork out a single cent, do you understand?"
