Chapter 147: Trump Cards! [FIXED!]
Jason stood at the center of the devastated plain while the Ember Lord and Shade Lord towered behind him like ancient gods. Their colossal forms pulsed with raw, primordial power that distorted the air around them. He had not summoned them because he needed help defeating the Tartaros army. He had summoned them because he wanted every survivor, every spy, and every hidden observer to understand exactly how vast the gap between them truly was.
The Ember Lord slowly raised a molten fist while chains of liquid fire whipped across the battlefield, leaving glowing scars in the earth wherever they passed. The Shade Lord extended writhing tendrils of absolute darkness that pierced through shattered barriers and broken fortifications as though they were made of paper. Jason watched the destruction with cold detachment, making no effort to hide the overwhelming disparity in power.
He wasn’t here to negotiate. He wasn’t here to capture prisoners. He was here to slaughter anyone who had come for the Marrow.
With a casual flick of his fingers, Jason gave the order. The Ember Lord slammed both fists into the ground, unleashing expanding waves of incinerating heat that rolled across the battlefield like a volcanic eruption. Armor melted into glowing slag while flesh turned to ash before the victims could even scream. The Shade Lord followed immediately after, its tendrils lashing out to drain the life force from every mage still pinned beneath Jason’s gravity field.
Jason watched without emotion as another commander was caught between fire and shadow. The Ember Lord’s molten chains wrapped around his body while the Shade Lord’s tendrils pierced through his chest, and the combined assault erased him from existence in an instant. Only about six of them remained standing when space suddenly distorted directly in front of Jason.
A flash of silver light split the battlefield, and Elyndra Silverveil stepped through the distortion as though she had merely walked through a doorway. Her elven robes remained perfectly pristine despite the scorched earth, drifting ash, and blood-soaked carnage surrounding her.
The contrast between her calm appearance and the devastation around her was almost unsettling.
"Lower your hand!" Elyndra commanded sharply, thrusting one hand toward Jason.
Jason paused mid-motion. Behind him, the Ember Lord and Shade Lord immediately halted their assault, their colossal forms looming silently over the battlefield like restrained natural disasters.
Elyndra’s eyes widened slightly as she took in the scene. Hundreds of corpses lay in neat ranks across the plain, their bodies crushed, burned, or reduced to ash. The air reeked of scorched earth, molten metal, and blood, yet Jason showed no signs of exhaustion, strain, or even excitement.
Her gaze shifted briefly toward the Ant King standing near Kaelen, then returned to the two Marrow Lords. The realization in her expression was unmistakable.
"You control them... without force?" Elyndra asked carefully, studying the Lords with open disbelief.
Jason let out an audible sigh.
"Of course," Jason replied flatly. "Why would I summon beings I couldn’t control?"
Elyndra remained silent for a moment while silver mana flickered around her fingertips. She was clearly reassessing everything the council thought it knew about him.
"You ended an elite Tartaros force in under five minutes," Elyndra said finally, her tone becoming more formal. "The council will want a complete report on what happened here."
Jason noticed something that made his eyes narrow slightly. His gravity field was still active across the entire battlefield, crushing the surviving mages into the ground with enough force to shatter stone, yet Elyndra stood completely unaffected. There wasn’t even the slightest ripple in her robes.
The council members were far stronger than they had pretended.
That realization was kept away for later.
Jason released the gravity field with a thought. The surviving pinned mages collapsed onto their hands and knees, gasping desperately for air while clutching cracked armor and broken limbs. None of them even attempted to stand.
"I held up my end of the bargain," Jason said evenly while looking directly at Elyndra. "Now you do the same."
Elyndra gave a single nod.
"Agreed," Elyndra replied calmly.
She raised both hands, and intricate silver runes spread through the air like a web of moonlight. The glowing symbols wrapped around the wrists and ankles of the surviving elites, forming chains that tightened automatically whenever they struggled.
With another gesture, Elyndra expanded the spell into a massive teleportation array that engulfed the surviving prisoners, the shattered siege constructs, and even the remaining ruins of the town. Silver light flooded the battlefield.
In a single flash, the entire group vanished.
The plain fell silent.
Jason lowered his hands, and the Ember Lord and Shade Lord shrank rapidly back into their orb forms before merging into his body. He kept his thoughts to himself. The surviving commanders were important figures within their dark guild, but they were not the true rulers of Tartaros. They would still provide useful information once the council began interrogating them.
A faint prickle touched the back of his neck. Someone was watching him through clairvoyance magic.
Jason turned his gaze sharply toward the distant horizon. The observation spell snapped off instantly, the connection severed so quickly that whoever had been watching clearly hadn’t expected to be noticed.
Interesting.
Kaelen stood several meters away, completely frozen. His face had gone pale, and his eyes remained fixed on the battlefield as though he still couldn’t process what he had witnessed. When Jason looked at him, the cold expression on his face disappeared instantly.
"Kaelen!" Jason shouted happily, his voice suddenly bright and energetic.
Before the lizardkin could react, Jason jogged over and pulled him into a tight hug, lifting him slightly off the ground. Kaelen stiffened in complete shock while his arms hung awkwardly at his sides.
"W-what the—little meat?!" Kaelen sputtered, his voice cracking from sheer confusion. "One second you’re crushing armies like insects, and the next you’re hugging me?!"
Jason laughed and set him back down.
"It’s good to see you in one piece," Jason said with a grin. "That Ant King flight looked pretty rough from down here."
Kaelen immediately took a step back and rubbed his arms as though checking that they were still attached. His gaze flicked between Jason, the scorched battlefield, and the Ant King looming nearby.
"Rough?" Kaelen repeated incredulously. "I thought I was going to die again. And you... what in the abyss was that? Those giant Lords, the way you walked through an entire army... I honestly thought you were going to kill everyone here, including me for a second."
The Ant King clicked its mandibles softly, watching the exchange without moving. Its golden eyes remained fixed on Jason with quiet attentiveness.
Jason scratched the back of his head, looking almost embarrassed by the concern.
"Nah, you’re safe," Jason replied casually. "They were the ones who came looking for trouble. I just made sure the message was impossible to misunderstand."
Kaelen gestured weakly at the battlefield.
"Impossible to misunderstand?" Kaelen said, staring at the endless field of corpses. "You turned this place into a graveyard. I’ve seen monsters before, little meat, but that was something else entirely."
Jason’s smile faded slightly as he proceeded to explain the situation to him.
Kaelen fell silent for a moment while the weight of that explanation settled in. The battlefield suddenly looked less like the aftermath of a battle and more like the consequence of a calculated atrocity.
Jason glanced toward the spot where Elyndra had teleported away.
"The council’s stronger than they pretended," Jason muttered thoughtfully. "Elyndra didn’t even feel my gravity field. Not even a little."
Kaelen crossed his arms, still looking unsettled.
"And you’re just okay with all of this?" Kaelen asked, narrowing his eyes. "How do you switch from that cold killer to this so easily?"
Jason grinned again, the abrupt shift somehow making the contrast even stranger.
"Keeps life interesting," Jason replied cheerfully. "Besides, after dealing with those idiots, I needed a friendly face around here. You okay? No broken bones from the flight?"
Kaelen let out a shaky laugh despite himself.
"I’ll live," Kaelen admitted reluctantly. "Barely. But next time, give me a warning before you decide to become a one-man apocalypse."
Jason could sense the sorrow in him, there was something about Kaelen that had changed despite him trying to hide it, he reeked of alcohol.
The Ant King stepped closer and lowered one of its armored forelimbs toward Jason. Jason reached up and patted the massive limb with obvious familiarity.
"Thanks for the intercept," Jason said while looking up at the giant creature. "Good timing."
The Ant King clicked its mandibles once in acknowledgment.
Kaelen shook his head again, still trying to reconcile the battlefield destroyer with the person casually talking to a giant insect.
"You’re impossible, little meat," Kaelen said with a weary sigh. "Or should I stop calling you that now? It feels a little inaccurate after watching you erase an army."
Jason laughed.
"Call me whatever you want," Jason replied with a grin. "Just don’t puke on my shoes next time."
Kaelen snorted despite himself.
The three of them stood amid the silent battlefield while the blood-red sky slowly darkened overhead. Jason’s expression gradually became thoughtful again as he stared toward the distant horizon where the clairvoyance spell had originated.
The real powers behind Tartaros were still out there. Someone had been watching this entire battle, and they had cut the connection the moment he noticed them.
"Jason, there is something I need to tell..." Kaelen said, his voice was shaky.
But his voice broke before he could deliver the message.
"I know..." Jason said, with a comforting hand on his back.
