Chapter 486: Chapter 486: The Car Accident Was No Accident
Ashley Shaw immediately recognized it as the car that had come to pick her and Ariana Grant up on the day Warren Prescott, still not recovered from his memory loss, had invited them for a meal.
Jensen Hayes was puzzled as to why Ashley Shaw was staring at someone else’s car, but when a tall, handsome man stepped out, he instantly understood.
To lose to Warren Prescott was no disgrace.
But he couldn’t help feeling a slight tinge of disappointment in his heart.
Fortunately, this feeling came and went quickly. After hearing Robin say that she liked Warren Prescott, he was saddened and dejected for a couple of days, but he soon emerged from his slump.
Life had to go on. He couldn’t let Ashley Shaw’s presence decide his life or death. It wouldn’t be fair to his parents, nor to all the effort he had put into pursuing his dreams.
Yet reason cannot fully control emotions, and a bit of this disappointment was inevitable.
"Here to pick you up?" Jensen Hayes quickly asked with a natural expression.
Ashley Shaw nodded, didn’t explain, and asked him to inform Robin that she was leaving first, then walked towards Warren Prescott.
Warren Prescott had a faint smile on his face and only turned to look at Jensen Hayes after Ashley Shaw got into the car.
Rivals in love could always recognize each other at a glance.
But the Warren Prescott now was not the Warren Prescott of eighteen; he merely glanced over, then withdrew his gaze as if he saw nothing and got into the car.
The car drove out of the school gate.
Ashley Shaw sent a message to Ariana Grant on her phone, saying she might be back at school a few days later—Ariana Grant was also staying at school for this National Day holiday.
Having found an excuse to accompany Grandpa Prescott in advance, Ariana Grant quickly replied with an "OK," saying she’d wait at school for her return.
After putting away her phone, Ashley Shaw noticed that the car had stopped in front of a restaurant.
This restaurant was a century-old establishment, and in her past life, she and Warren Prescott had come here once after their wedding. Grandpa Prescott had also joined them.
The two of them agreed that the food here was very tasty.
All in all, they had left reasonably pleasant memories at this restaurant.
Choosing this place, Warren Prescott—was it a coincidence or deliberate?
A lot of thoughts flashed through her mind in an instant, but in reality, only two seconds passed before she withdrew her gaze from the restaurant sign and looked at Warren Prescott in the driver’s seat.
"Is Leo here?"
She knew Xavier Quincy couldn’t possibly be here, but it was a lead-in to the following conversation.
Sure enough, Warren Prescott shook his head and said, "It’s almost dinnertime, let’s have a meal first."
Ashley Shaw immediately said, "I’m not hungry, let’s go find him directly."
Warren Prescott replied without changing his expression, "We’re over fourteen hundred kilometers away from Leo. You may not be hungry, but I’m afraid I’ll get hungry on the way. Who would drive if I faint from hunger? You don’t have a driver’s license yet, do you?"
This is the advantage of having a driver’s license. Luckily, she had obtained hers early in this lifetime.
Ashley Shaw was momentarily speechless, then asked, "It’s so far, we’re driving there?"
"Tickets during National Day are hard to get... If we use a private jet, my dad would find out. I think it’s best if not too many people know about our matter, right?"
Ashley Shaw understood the gravity of the situation and could only compromise and get out of the car with him.
It was only eleven o’clock, and they were the first customers.
Warren Prescott took the menu handed over by the waiter and didn’t even need to look closely to say the names of a few dishes.
They were all dishes that Ashley Shaw loved to eat.
Or, to be precise, those she loved before her "rebirth."
Ashley Shaw didn’t say a word, and only after the waiter had left did she speak up, "Are we sure we’ll be able to see him once we get there?"
Warren Prescott hummed an affirmation and said, "I asked my grandfather’s old friend for a pass. Once we’re there, we’ll be able to see him with it."
Given this, Ashley Shaw had nothing more to say.
When the dishes were served, Warren Prescott reached out and put a cola chicken wing on her plate.
Ashley Shaw didn’t change her expression, placing the cola chicken wing onto the plate for food scraps.
"You don’t need to pick for me, I don’t like it."
Warren Prescott was a bit surprised, "Didn’t you love eating this the most?"
She used to make it often when cooking.
Ashley Shaw guessed the reason for Warren Prescott’s misunderstanding that she liked cola chicken wings and looked at him, saying, "It was you who liked them, so I made them often. I never liked them at all."
Warren Prescott awkwardly tugged at the corner of his lips, saying, "I’m sorry..."
Ashley Shaw said lightly, "You don’t have to apologize. It was my own fault for before, you weren’t the one in the wrong."
Yet hearing this made Warren Prescott feel even worse.
The phrase ’creating your own trap’ became vividly concrete at this moment.
"It’s not you who deserved it, it’s me..."
His low murmurs weren’t clear if they were meant for himself or Ashley Shaw.
But Ashley Shaw heard it clearly, yet she pretended not to.
What’s the use of saying these things now?
She could forgive the Warren Prescott of this life, but she could never forgive the Warren Prescott of her past life.
Because the Warren Prescott of this lifetime hadn’t done anything unforgivable, whereas the Warren Prescott of her past life had truly and clearly betrayed and hurt her, even indirectly causing her death.
She’s not someone who tolerates everything, so if she forgave all of this, she couldn’t blame Rosalind Lynch and others for calling her a "wench."
Warren Prescott wasn’t in a good mood either. Before coming to see her, his heart was filled with excitement, but after meeting her, all he had was bitterness and regret.
If only he hadn’t hesitated so much before, if he had clarified the truth earlier, they wouldn’t be in the current situation.
They finished the meal in silence, and once back in the car, Warren Prescott used the GPS for directions, with the car heading towards the highway entrance.
"If we start now, we won’t get stuck in traffic on the highway. I prepared water in advance, so if you’re thirsty, you can grab some from the back. Oh, and I also bought a small blanket, so if you’re sleepy, you can cover yourself and take a nap."
Ashley Shaw said coolly, "Just drive, you don’t need to say all that."
Warren Prescott agreed with a "Sure," and the car finally started its journey towards Glanburn.
Ashley Shaw glanced at the destination on the GPS and felt a moment of clarity.
Turns out Leo was in Glanburn.
Glanburn houses the nation’s largest satellite launch center, so Leo being there was unexpected yet made sense.
The car went on and off the road until they finally reached the highway where Warren Prescott could set the cruise control, allowing himself some slight relaxation.
"How is Ariana doing with her health now?"
Since his background was already clarified, much could be said without beating around the bush.
Ashley Shaw still spoke in a detached manner, "Nothing major anymore."
"That’s good then."
He appeared visibly relieved, which made Ashley Shaw smirk coldly.
She couldn’t comprehend his pretense of being a good person.
"On the day of Ariana’s funeral, I asked you to accompany me, but you couldn’t even spare a bit of time. So now, what do you mean by asking all these questions? Pretending you’re a good person?"
Warren Prescott remembered that day.
That day, he was originally going to accompany her, but a last-minute incident happened.
It was inconvenient to explain at the time, and now... since it involved Owen Sinclair, he wasn’t sure if it was convenient to explain now either.
