Chapter 1063: Chapter 1063: What a Skillful Move

‌Kai‌’s words made Lucy’s cheeks heat up. Smiling, she said, "I know, you’re the best. Come on, my mom said she’s making braised ribs for you tonight, your favorite."

"It’s our mom who really spoils me!" ‌Kai‌ shamelessly claimed the family connection outright, joking with Lucy as they got in the car.

Only, when they got upstairs, ‌Kai‌ was surprised to see a familiar face coming out the door with a trash bag in hand.

The key point was, this apartment... was right across the hall from Lucy’s.

Jerry gave Lucy and ‌Kai‌ a slight nod, then headed downstairs to take out the trash.

‌Kai‌ watched Jerry go down the stairs, then finally turned his head back in horror and looked at Lucy. "Wait, why is my uncle here?"

Lucy didn’t even know what to say. She pointed at the door Jerry had just walked out of and said, "He lives there."

Lucy added, "He moved in on the third day after you and I got engaged."

‌Kai‌ forcefully pushed his jaw back up before it could drop to the floor. "Yup, Uncle really is an engineer fresh out of the training program. His execution... is top-notch."

After he said that, he turned to glance at Lucy and asked, "Lucy, do you mind my uncle living here?"

"Mm, I don’t exactly mind, it’s just... at first it felt a little awkward." Lucy was straightforward with ‌Kai‌.

She knew this man was her biological dad, but she had never actually lived with her dad. That feeling... was honestly a bit weird.

But in the few days since Jerry moved in, he really hadn’t disturbed their family at all.

He was just like a warmhearted neighbor: when he took out his trash, he’d take theirs from the doorway as well, or if he ran into her mom coming back from grocery shopping, he’d help carry the bags upstairs.

He truly hadn’t overstepped even a little, so that initial nervous awkwardness slowly faded, and now they had accepted him as a good neighbor.

‌Kai‌ wasn’t stupid; of course he could tell that Lucy’s family was unconsciously starting to accept his uncle’s presence.

No wonder he was his uncle.

Those tactics were impressive.

‌Kai‌ followed Lucy into the apartment. Emma Wells had already finished cooking everything. She urged them to wash up and eat, then stood by the door, looking out through the peephole.

Seeing that Lucy and Old Mrs. Wells both kept quiet, ‌Kai‌ pretended not to notice as well.

When he saw Emma’s brows furrow, ‌Kai‌ immediately pricked up his ears to listen. Sure enough, he heard soft footsteps in the hallway, followed by the sound of the neighbor’s door across the hall opening and closing.

Emma’s expression darkened a little as she turned and went into the kitchen. She took a big lunch box, filled it to the brim with food, and carried it out the door.

Old Mrs. Wells had no objections to her daughter’s behavior whatsoever.

She was getting old; sooner or later she would have to go first. If her daughter had someone to rely on, she could feel at ease.

When she was gone, she’d only be able to rest in peace if there was someone to protect her daughter and granddaughter.

‌Kai‌ stared blankly at the reactions of Old Mrs. Wells and Lucy, then silently sighed to himself. He really should’ve apprenticed himself to his uncle earlier—those tactics... were something else.

Inside the apartment across the hall, Jerry let Emma in and said, "Have some tea."

"No, I—" Emma hadn’t even finished the word when a cup of fragrant tea was already set down in front of her.
