Chapter 152: Ch 151: Patience is a Virtue

Seraphina’s situation was unknown. The temple had taken her to the special room assigned to the Saintess with the excuse that it was ’tradition’ and that the room had special healing properties.

Kael was ready to call this all bullshit and take Seraphina back when he was reminded by the presence of guards and ordinary people that he was at the temple.

Causing a scene here would not help him or the kids.

’Fucking hell. I really want to break this place down, consequences be damned. But most of these people are innocent and only want the best for Seraphina. What a nightmare.’

Why could he not be reborn as an emotionless doll that did not care about human emotions? That way, he could have blown this temple up and not cared about the collateral damage.

"Kael, do you want me to blow this place up? I promise I won’t take too long."

Leon asked with a serious expression, and his words made Kael feel another headache creeping up his neck.

He knew that he wanted to be reborn as an emotionless person, but he did not need Leon to fill that role. He was the hero, for crying out loud. He was supposed to care for people!

’No, let’s forget it. This is all just a nightmare and it’s affecting us all. Leon is...the less I think about it, the better.’

As much as Kael wanted to believe that Leon was behaving like this because of the situation, he knew that it was not the case. Somewhere, something had gone wrong, and Leon had changed.

Luckily, before Kael’s thoughts could spiral even further out of control, someone came to escort them to their room.

"I apologize. We do not have enough rooms for you all currently. Would you mind staying in the hero’s room until we prepare suitable accommodations for you? The Cardinal told us to hurry, but our first priority is the Saintess."

The guard told Kael, pretending he was worried about Seraphina and that was why all this delay was happening. But honestly, it was more likely that this was being caused by negligence.

Kael did not reply, which the guard took as agreement, and started leading them back.

The hero’s room was spacious enough to host ten people at the same time. But it only had one bed.

Kael expected the guard to offer them bedding, but the guard washed his hands of the matter as soon as he finished escorting them there.

"I should take my leave now. It will be my turn to guard the Saintess soon. Please let someone know if you need anything else."

That guard likely lied. There was no way the temple would allow someone as careless as him to ever guard their precious Saintess. But the reason Kael did not call him out on that bluff was because he did not want to cause any trouble for himself.

It was far better if these ignorant guards decided to leave him alone.

"The temple is trying to separate us from Seraphina. You got that feeling as well, right?"

Leon asked, and Kael nodded. The temple was not even trying to hide it at this point.

However, the only problem was that the temple had somehow gained momentum in this situation and was taking advantage of it. And Seraphina was also under some strange kind of magic that had even made her lose consciousness.

Kael ideally wanted as little bloodshed as possible while clearing this situation up, but it no longer seemed possible.

’Well, Iris, it is up to you now. I hope you find some evidence of what is happening before I lose my patience. Otherwise, this situation will get ugly.’

__________

’Does this temple have no security? Or are they just too confident in their security to leave it this lax?’

Iris had expected to have a hard time sneaking around the temple, but so far, it had been far too easy. She would even go as far as to say that she was worried about the future of the temple if the security remained like this.

So far, she had simply walked from one office to another with minimal resistance, and no one had even noticed.

The soldiers had even passed the unlocked rooms and noticed that they were open with no one inside. But they never questioned it, nor did they relock the rooms.

Well, it made Iris’s task easier, so she did not question it and kept moving from one room to another.

Finally, she reached Cardinal Flux’s office and broke the lock open.

This office looked exactly like every other office in the hallway. It was likely meant to show that the Cardinal did not think himself superior to the others and that he was willing to share the same space...or some similar bullshit.

’Tsk, I am getting distracted now. Let’s find what I am here for and then head back.’

Iris looked around the office and finally found the drawer with the evidence she was looking for. There were a lot of letters, but she ignored them all and checked the back of the desk.

There was a magical seal that prevented anyone from accessing that compartment. Usually, it would only respond if the person it was connected to passed their magic (or equivalent) through the seal.

In this case, the one who needed to do this was the Cardinal. Anyone else would be rejected.

However, Iris was determined to get in. So she decided to break in.

Breaking the seal itself was not possible, but the Cardinal had forgotten to take the surrounding material into account.

Iris ended up breaking the entire desk compartment apart, leaving the seal intact.

And that was where she hit the jackpot. She found a dozen letters exchanged between the Cardinal and an ’unknown’ sender, detailing how he needed help controlling the Saintess.

Coincidentally, they also contained other incriminating details, such as the use of corruption and Cardinal Flux’s willingness to engage with it.

Iris wanted to call him a fool for not destroying this evidence, but she quickly noticed the seal on the letters—they could not be destroyed.

’Ah, it seems like Cardinal Flux’s partner is a cautious one. Not only did they keep their own copy of the letters to ensure Cardinal Flux could not betray them, but they also made sure it would be impossible to destroy his side of the evidence.’

Well, this was good news for Iris. She had finally secured the evidence Kael needed her to find.
